It serves more than 10,000 professors, instructors, and researchers, and more than 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students. In particular, it provides an agile cloud application platform for R&D and teaching. In this talk, I will share our experience building and operating such a community PaaS using Cloud Foundry.

Organizations are consuming cloud infrastructure across multiple cloud providers both inside their data center and the data centers of others. The advent of highly portable workloads via containers (e.g. Docker) and discrete units of computing delivered by microservices are enabling organizations (like Netflix) to deploy complex multi-layered products and services at breakneck speeds.
This talk will give an overview of the major cloud services and the open source software (e.g. OpenStack, Apache CloudStack) that can be used to deliver and manage cloud computing infrastructure(e.g. Puppet, Chef, Ansible). The discussion will cover the evolution of cloud computing and how that sets the stage for realizing the agility, flexibility and power of cloud computing.

Over time, a new type of application has now emerged, known as the Cloud Native Application. Such an application is said to be purpose-built for deployment on the Cloud. This has even led to a new paradigm known as Cloud Native Computing. In practice though, it is easy to be confused or unclear as to what Cloud Native means. How does a Cloud Native approach change the way in which developers code applications? How does this influence the architecture of an application? Does it force you to use a certain set of technologies such as Containers? Or, does it mean that an application that simply runs and scales on a distributed Cloud Platform is somehow considered to be running natively on the Cloud? Cloud Native Computing impacts on the answers to each of these questions, and applications running on the Cloud may not be considered Cloud Native at all.
In this talk, the meaning of Cloud Native will be explored and clarified. With practical examples where appropriate, the concepts behind a Cloud Native Application will be demonstrated. These examples will not only touch on the common terms and phrases around Cloud Native Computing such as DevOps, Microservices, The 12-Factor App methodology, but also on the technologies that have driven the creation this new paradigm, such as Cloud Foundry, Docker, and Kubernetes. How these technologies are used to deploy and scale Cloud Native Applications on "Platform as a Service" (PaaS) Cloud Platforms will also be presented.
At the conclusion, what is considered a Cloud Native Application and why should be clear - the attributes and typical architecture of such an application, as well as how technologies and PaaS services can be used to drive these applications on the cloud.

Originally, servers were treated like pets that were individually cared for, but in modern cloud computing they are treated like cattle in a herd that can be replaced without individual attention when one goes down. This shift reflects how infrastructure has become automated, standardized and able to dynamically scale out on demand. The metaphor helped explain why cloud computing was different from traditional IT and how failures could be handled without impact.
OpenStack Summit :: Profiling the Nova Scheduler
The document discusses profiling the Nova scheduler in OpenStack. It finds that the Essex scheduler was slow and scheduled too many virtual machines in some situations. The scheduler looked at each VM individually, used synchronous RPC calls, and boto retries led to multiple scheduling attempts when API timeouts occurred. These factors combined to cause performance issues with large scheduling requests. The Folsom scheduler addressed these problems with improvements like asynchronous messaging and handling scheduling as a group.

Cloudscaling's Troy Angrignon participated in a panel on private cloud at Citrix Synergy 2011 in San Francisco on May 26, 2011. The conclusions:
- All three of the panelists agreed that there is such a thing as private cloud.
- Carpathia specializes in building high complexity custom private clouds.
- There are two types of clouds: legacy clouds for highly regulated, complex client/server type IT stacks and webscale clouds for less regulated, web/mobile, greenfield and simpler stacks that need to scale.
- Panel discussed how those two models (legacy cloud and webscale cloud) could be found inside (private) or outside (public).
- Key is to realize that applications should always be moved to the platform that is appropriate for the application, use case, regulatory requirement, elasticity requirement.

OpenStack Scale-out Networking Architecture
(1) The document describes OpenStack networking architecture that scales to over 1,000 servers without using Neutron. It uses a layer 3 spine and leaf topology with no VLANs.
(2) Key components include Nova network which is distributed, NAT services on the edge, and a VIF driver that sets up routing and DHCP for each VM.
(3) Challenges included moving OpenStack targets and an immature Neutron. The architecture provides a solid underlay for SDN and future integration with Neutron.

AWS Repatriation: Bring Your Apps Back
Running your own infrastructure *can* be as little as half the cost of running on AWS once you are at scale. OpenStack-based cloud systems can provide the same or similar economies of scale if you leverage the lessons of AWS and GCE when building your cloud. This talk discusses the economic factors in designing a cost-efficient AWS + OpenStack hybrid cloud. We look at the issues involved in repatriating existing applications, and show a couple of real-world demonstration of tools that can assist in the repatriation process. Repatriation isn quite as simple as hitting the Easy button, but if you plan your deployment correctly, you can make it work, both technically and economically.

Randy Bias, CEO and Co-founder of Cloudscaling examines the progress from Grizzly to Havana and delves into new areas like refstack, tripleO, bare metal server provisioning, the move from "projects" to "programs", and public/hybrid cloud compatibility. Check out the updated statistics on project momentum and look more closely at big upgrades in Havana, including OpenStack Orchestrate (Heat), which has the opportunity to change the game for OpenStack in the greater private and hybrid cloud game. We also discuss the "what is 'core'" debate and examine the idea that OpenStack is a kernel, not a complete cloud OS.
Scale-Out Block Storage
Existing approaches to delivering persistent block storage in OpenStack focus on integrating existing SAN/NAS hardware solutions, using Distributed File Systems (DFS), or using simple Direct Attached Storage (DAS) with Cinder. There is another alternative: scale-out block storage nodes with intelligent scheduling. This is the same approach that Amazon Web Services (AWS) uses for Elastic Block Storage (EBS) and it's worth taking a close look at the pros and cons. This presentation will explore the differences between SAN, NAS, DFS, DAS, and EBS. We will look at the implicit and explicit contracts that users and operators get from the different approaches and look at a variety of failure conditions. EBS may not be right for some clouds, but for many it's an important and viable alternative to the existing approaches.

OpenStack Summit :: Redundancy Doesn't Always Mean "HA" or "Cluster"
1) "HA" pairs are commonly used but are not the only way to achieve redundancy. They have limitations around catastrophic failures and lack of scale out.
2) Alternative patterns like distributed load balancing and brokerless messaging can provide redundancy without single points of failure and allow for scale out.
3) Service distribution is presented as a superior approach that combines standard networking technologies to provide resilient, stateless and scale out services for OpenStack.

Distributed RPC in Nova with ZeroMQ

Java is for many years one of the most popular programming languages, but it used to have hard times in the Serverless community. Java is known for its high cold start times and high memory footprint, comparing to other programming languages like Node.js and Python. In this talk I'll look at the general best practices and techniques we can use to decrease memory consumption, cold start times for Java Serverless development on AWS including GraalVM (Native Image) and AWS own offering SnapStart based on Firecracker microVM snapshot and restore and CRaC (Coordinated Restore at Checkpoint) runtime hooks. I'll also provide a lot of benchmarking on Lambda functions trying out various deployment package sizes, Lambda memory settings, Java compilation options and HTTP (a)synchronous clients and measure their impact on cold and warm start times.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.
