Editor's Notes
OpenStack requires a customer to make a number of technology choices, from the underlying infrastructure to the operational, management and support tools.
VMware provides the solid infrastructure and tools on which to run OpenStack.
The VMware Advantage: the best way for enterprise OpenStack:
The advanced compute, network, storage capabilities needed by your app teams.
The most reliable + secure infrastructure platform and ecosystem
Lowest TCO from complete management tools and efficient use of hardware
How?
Best-of-breed virtualization components like vSphere, NSX, and vSAN.
Let you leverage your existing operational practices + tools.
Fill key gaps in OpenStack with a full cloud management platform.
The SDDC model makes it easy to take advantage of emerging Open APIs for modern apps.
Common OpenStack use cases are similar to those for AWS: new “cloud native” apps that use APIs for a fully automated provisioning / scale-out model.
The combination of VMware’s best-of-breed SDDC technologies, the benefits of leveraging existing expertise, and the gaps filled by VMware’s mgmt technologies mean that the best way for an enterprise to run OpenStack is on VMware.
Contribute: VMware is contributing significantly to OpenStack, enabling Open APIs to the vCloud Suite.
Differentiate: Running OpenStack with VMware leverages the proven SDDC platform with fastest time-to-value and lowest cost-of-ownership for VMware customers.
Enable: VMware offers two routes to deploying OpenStack:
General purpose OpenStack Distros from partners (framework of heterogeneous components)
VMware Integrated OpenStack (quick time to value for an all VMware stack).
But our commitment to OpenStack stretches back much further.
Niciria, now part of VMware, led the creation of the networking project (Neutron) for OpenStack in 2010.
And, since then, VMware has steadily increased our contributions to the OpenStack project while also enabling other OpenStack distribution partners to leverage VMware technologies.
T: And now with VMware Integrated OpenStack, we take it one step further.
Let’s you leverage existing expertise + architecture to get quick time to value, can evolve over time.
Your existing, validated, architecture can be used to provide production-grade openstack immediately
No need to learn new hypervisor, storage solutions.
Works with your existing management tools + troubleshooting models.
Ex: start out with existing storage solution, but know that you can move to a more commodity-based storage solution down the road.
OpenStack provides the cloud framework. It needs hardware, virtualization technologies as well as operational and cloud management tools.
VMware infrastructure for OpenStack includes:
vCenter & ESX: Compute
NSX: Networking
vCenter datastores (including VSAN): Storage
vCOPS, LogInsight: Operational tools
vCAC, ITBM: Cloud management
- Soundtrack: At Catalyst 2014, Gartner advised enterprises against deploying standalone OpenStack, but supported the deployment of an Cloud Management Platform (CMP) that incorporates OpenStack.
“…an instance of an OpenStack installation does not make a cloud. As an operator you will be dealing with many additional activities not all of which users see. These include….
....These activities are bound to consume a significant amount of time and effort. OpenStack gives some very key ingredients to build a cloud, but it is not cloud in a box.”
http://www.subbu.org/blog/2013/07/openstack-is-not-cloud
VIO consists of the OpenStack code pre-configured to use the VMware OpenStack drivers and the tools required to install, upgrade and operate an OpenStack cloud on top of VMware technologies.
VIO is very easy to install but at the same time leverages a powerful VMware-optimized production grade architecture.
In addition to VIO itself, we are also working on making VMware enterprise grade tools OpenStack aware.
Support for VIO is provided fully by VMware allowing a single support contact for customers running OpenStack on top of VMware.
