This document discusses the rise of services as the new cloud platform (SaaP) and how they enable business agility. It defines SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS more tightly and introduces SaaP as composable, reusable services optimized for DevOps. SaaP allows for an a la carte consumption model versus the prix fixe model of PaaS. The document argues that AWS operates more as SaaP than IaaS/PaaS and that DevOps without SaaP misses something important. This talk will provide an overview of the PaaS (Platform as a Service) landscape, and will describe the Cloud Foundry open source PaaS, with its multi-framework, multi-service, multi-cloud model. Cloud Foundry allows developers to provision apps in Java/Spring, Ruby/Rails, Ruby/Sinatra, Javascript/Node, and leverage services like MySQL, MongoDB, Reddis, Postgres and RabbitMQ. It can be used as a public PaaS on CloudFoundry.com and other service providers (ActiveState, AppFog), to create your own private cloud, or on your laptop using the Micro Cloud Foundry VM. The talk will end with a demo of Cloud Foundry in action, showing the end to end development workflow, from developing locally with Micro Cloud Foundry to deploying on Cloud Foundry.com. Bridge to the Cloud: Using Apache Kafka to Migrate to AWS

Most organizations don't move to the cloud all at once. You start with a new use case, or a new application. Sometimes these applications can run independently in the cloud, but oftentimes they need data from the on-premises datacenter. After the first migration is successful, more applications follow: brand new applications start in the cloud and need some data from existing applications that are still running on-premises. Existing applications slowly migrate, but need a strategy for migrating their data in phases, an initial bulk upload often followed by incremental updates. In a mature organization, this process can take years. In this session, Apache Kafka co-creator Jay Kreps shares how companies around the world are using Kafka to migrate to AWS. By implementing a central pipeline architecture using Apache Kafka to sync on-premises and cloud deployments, companies can accelerate migration times and reduce costs. The Kafka-centric migration process is ultimately more manageable for the organization.

In this session, we will introduce the patterns and practice to extend the Docker swarm mode for better support for workloads in cloud. Led by the rocket like success of Amazon Web Services cloud computing is a paradigm shift in the way we host and deploy infrastructure. Organizations are consuming cloud infrastructure across multiple cloud providers both inside their data center and the data centers of others. The advent of highly portable workloads via containers (e.g. Docker) and discrete units of computing delivered by microservices are enabling organizations (like Netflix) to deploy complex multi-layered products and services at breakneck speeds. This talk will give an overview of the major cloud services and the open source software (e.g. OpenStack, Apache CloudStack) that can be used to deliver and manage cloud computing infrastructure(e.g. Puppet, Chef, Ansible). The discussion will cover the evolution of cloud computing and how that sets the stage for realizing the agility, flexibility and power of cloud computing. Attendees should expect to learn about the leading technologies in cloud computing, strategies for using open source software to create/manage cloud computing services and to gain an understanding how current developments are providing a way to create a single cloud fabric that best serves their individual needs.

Cloud computing has recently emerged as an exciting new trend in the ICT industry. Several IT vendors are promising to offer on-demand storage, application and computational hosting services, and provide coverage in several continents, offering Service-Level Agreements (SLA) backed performance and uptime promises for their services. While these ‘clouds’ are the natural evolution of traditional clusters and data centres, they are distinguished by following a ‘utility’ pricing model where customers are charged based on their utilisation of computational resources, storage and transfer of data. Whilst these emerging services have reduced the cost of computation, application hosting and content storage and delivery by several orders of magnitude, there is significant complexity involved in ensuring applications, services and data can scale when needed to ensure consistent and reliable operation under peak loads. This tutorial endeavors to familiarise the audience with the new cloud computing paradigm, whilst comparing and contrasting it with existing approaches to scaling out computing resources such as cluster and grid computing. Case studies of numerous existing compute, storage and application cloud services will be given, familiarising the audience with the capabilities and limitations of current providers of cloud computing services. The hands-on interaction with these services during this tutorial will allow the audience to understand the mechanisms needed to harness cloud computing in their own respective endeavors. Finally, many open research problems that have arisen from the rapid uptake of cloud computing will be detailed, which will hopefully motivate the audience to address these in their own future research and development.

Creating a single microservice is a well understood problem. Creating a cluster of load-balanced microservices that are resilient and self-healing is not so easy. Managing that cluster with rollouts and rollbacks, scaling individual services on demand, securely sharing secrets and configuration among services is even harder. Kubernetes, an open-source container management system, can help with this. In this talk, we will start with a simple microservice, containerize it using Docker, and scale it to a cluster of resilient microservices managed by Kubernetes. Along the way, we will learn what makes Kubernetes a great system for automating deployment, operations, and scaling of containerized applications.

AWS Repatriation: Bring Your Apps Back

Running your own infrastructure *can* be as little as half the cost of running on AWS once you are at scale. OpenStack-based cloud systems can provide the same or similar economies of scale if you leverage the lessons of AWS and GCE when building your cloud. This talk discusses the economic factors in designing a cost-efficient AWS + OpenStack hybrid cloud. We look at the issues involved in repatriating existing applications, and show a couple of real-world demonstration of tools that can assist in the repatriation process. Repatriation isn quite as simple as hitting the Easy button, but if you plan your deployment correctly, you can make it work, both technically and economically.

Existing approaches to delivering persistent block storage in OpenStack focus on integrating existing SAN/NAS hardware solutions, using Distributed File Systems (DFS), or using simple Direct Attached Storage (DAS) with Cinder. There is another alternative: scale-out block storage nodes with intelligent scheduling. This is the same approach that Amazon Web Services (AWS) uses for Elastic Block Storage (EBS) and it's worth taking a close look at the pros and cons. This presentation will explore the differences between SAN, NAS, DFS, DAS, and EBS. We will look at the implicit and explicit contracts that users and operators get from the different approaches and look at a variety of failure conditions. EBS may not be right for some clouds, but for many it's an important and viable alternative to the existing approaches.

Is there such a thing as a private cloud? Cloudscaling's Troy Angrignon participated in a panel on private cloud at Citrix Synergy 2011 in San Francisco on May 26, 2011. The conclusions: - All three of the panelists agreed that there is such a thing as private cloud. - Carpathia specializes in building high complexity custom private clouds. - There are two types of clouds: legacy clouds for highly regulated, complex client/server type IT stacks and webscale clouds for less regulated, web/mobile, greenfield and simpler stacks that need to scale. - Panel discussed how those two models (legacy cloud and webscale cloud) could be found inside (private) or outside (public). - Key is to realize that applications should always be moved to the platform that is appropriate for the application, use case, regulatory requirement, elasticity requirement.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
