Gradle is an open-source build automation tool focused on flexibility, build reproducibility and performance. Over the years, this tool has evolved and introduced new concepts and features around dependency management, publication and other aspects on build and release of artifacts for the Java platform.
Keeping up to date with all these features across several projects can be challenging. How do you make sure that all your projects can be upgraded to the latest version of Gradle? What if you have thousands of projects and hundreds of engineers? How can you abstract common tasks for them and make sure that new releases work as expected?
At Netflix, we built Nebula, a collection of Gradle plugins that helps engineers remove boilerplate in Gradle build files, and makes building software the Netflix way easy. This reduces the cognitive load on developers, allowing them to focus on writing code.
In this talk, I’ll share with you our philosophy on how to build JVM artifacts and the pieces that help us boost the productivity of engineers at Netflix. I’ll talk about:
- What is Nebula
- What are the common problems we face and try to solve
- How we distribute it to every JVM engineer
- How we ensure that Nebula/Gradle changes do not break builds so we can ship new features with confidence at Netflix.

Convert a monolithic application into a microservice-based PaaS using Docker and related, containerization technologies. This will be the third presentation of a series of presentations that began greater than one year ago to evangelize the benefits of Docker. The scope of content spans from a development environment to a hybrid PaaS, and how Containerization is an enabler of architectural choice, innovation, scalability, and polyglot solutions.
The basics of Docker will be examined including repositories, brief discussion about managing and monitoring Docker containers, service discovery, and security. New and emerging technologies will be a constant theme, particularly about microservices, in addition to the ongoing evolution of the market and what the future may bring. Common organizational issues (and tactical solutions) that may impede successful decomposition and migration of legacy monoliths will be discussed, including security, DevOps and refactoring.
Hypothetical architectures will be described for building progressively more robust and complex applications and deployment models. The goal is to highlight the power, flexibility and scalability that containers enable.
Examples will start simple, from a local development environment, that is a simple two container setup that encapsulate a database and application tier. Cloudscaling's Troy Angrignon participated in a panel on private cloud at Citrix Synergy 2011 in San Francisco on May 26, 2011. The conclusions:
- All three of the panelists agreed that there is such a thing as private cloud.
- Carpathia specializes in building high complexity custom private clouds.
- There are two types of clouds: legacy clouds for highly regulated, complex client/server type IT stacks and webscale clouds for less regulated, web/mobile, greenfield and simpler stacks that need to scale.
- Panel discussed how those two models (legacy cloud and webscale cloud) could be found inside (private) or outside (public).
- Key is to realize that applications should always be moved to the platform that is appropriate for the application, use case, regulatory requirement, elasticity requirement.

The role of the product owner is probably the least well understood of the Scrum roles. When we talk of agility, we often refer to number of user stories or story points delivered, or burn down charts or velocity, etc. I call them 'lower-order agility' and howsomuch interesting they are, they make no sense to the 'higher-order agility' at business level. Why is that outrageous claims of performance, productivity and quality improvements at lower-order agility don't translate to commensurate higher-order agility? In this talk, I explore some of these issues. I also propose some ideas on how the whole notion of portfolio planning should be seen in the context of higher-order agility.

Existing approaches to delivering persistent block storage in OpenStack focus on integrating existing SAN/NAS hardware solutions, using Distributed File Systems (DFS), or using simple Direct Attached Storage (DAS) with Cinder. There is another alternative: scale-out block storage nodes with intelligent scheduling. This is the same approach that Amazon Web Services (AWS) uses for Elastic Block Storage (EBS) and it's worth taking a close look at the pros and cons. This presentation will explore the differences between SAN, NAS, DFS, DAS, and EBS. We will look at the implicit and explicit contracts that users and operators get from the different approaches and look at a variety of failure conditions. EBS may not be right for some clouds, but for many it's an important and viable alternative to the existing approaches.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
