5. Conjunctivitis is classified according to its cause.
MICROBIAL CONJUNCTIVITIS (Bacterial
conjunctivitis can be acute or chronic)
ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIS (Immunologic
Conjunctivitis)
TOXIC CONJUNCTIVITIS (Chemical conjunctivitis
can be the result of medications, chlorine from
swimming pools (more common during the
summer), exposure to toxic fumes among
industrial workers, or exposure to other irritants
such as smoke, hair sprays, acids, and alkalis).

Foreign body sensation
Scratching or burning sensation
Itching, and photophobia.
Purulent discharge in case of bacterial
infection

7. The four main clinical features important to
evaluate are the type of discharge (ie, watery,
mucoid, purulent, or mucopurulent)
Stained smears of conjunctival scrapings
Culture and sensitivity tests of purulent
discharge

8. Bacterial conjunctivitis requires topical
application of the appropriate antibiotics or
sulphonamide.
Viral conjunctivitis resists treatment , but
sulphonamide or broad-spectrum antibiotic
eye drops may be prevent secondary
infection.

9. Care of the client with conjunctivitis focuses on
resolving the infection and teaching prevention.
Carry out measures to control pain.
Demonstrate infection control measures.
Assess the client vision status
Teach the client about possible adverse effects
form treatment such as eye drops and ointment

10. Teach proper hand washing technique because
conjunctivitis can be highly contagious.
Tell the patient to avoid sharing washcloths,
towels and pillows with others.
Teach the patient to instil eye drops and
ointments correctly, without touching the
bottle tip to his /her eye or lashes.
