Conditionals show how one situation (the
condition) produces another (the consequence).
THE CONDITION
If John has time,
If I lived nearer,
THE CONSEQUENCE
he will call round to see you.
I could visit you more often.

IF can be at the beginning or in the
middle of the sentence.
• If we don’t hurry,
or
• We’ll be late
we’ll be late.

TYPES OF CONDITIONALS

TYPE 0
to talk about what you normally do in real-life situations;
to talk about things which are always true , such as scientific facts and general truths.
If + Simple Present, Simple Present
If you speak slowly, I can understand you.
If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
I usually take a bottle of wine or some flowers
if I go to a friend's house for dinner.

TYPE 1
It is possible and also very likely that the condition will be fulfilled
If + Simple Present, Future Simple
If you don’t wear a coat, you’ll be cold.
If they obey her, they won’t be punished.
She will marry him if he asks her.
We’ll be late if we don’t hurry.

TYPE 2
It is possible but very unlikely, that the condition will be fulfilled
If + Simple Past, Conditional
If I knew her number, I would telephone her.
If I didn’t want to go, I wouldn’t.
I’d go out if it weren’t raining.

TYPE 3
It is impossible that the condition will be fulfilled because it refers to the past.
If + Past Perfect, Perfect Conditional
(If + had/hadn’t + p.p., would/wouldn’t have + p.p.)
If I had found her address, I would have sent her
an invitation.
Unemployment would have decreased if the
politicians had acted differently.

 I wouldn’t have lost my job if I hadn’t been late for work.
