2. The Maltese Front And The Novel Of The Maltese Falcon
The film of the Maltese Falcon and the novel of the Maltese Falcon share some stark differences along
with certain similarities that the film and novel hold. John Huston who directed the film of the Maltese
Falcon shows Sam Spade a little differently as to how Dashiell Hammett portrays him. Both do share
some commonalities between them, yet we see a greater split from novel to film in the final scene of
the Maltese Falcon. The film portrays Spade as this stoic, cold hearted detective. Yet, the novel
displays Spade as a more dominate grabbing man that needs answers now. The film differs from the
novel as we see Spade portrayed in the film as a cold and stoic character as we see him in the novel as
a more dominate and persistent character. As we progress through the final scene Sam Spade briskly
moves on to alert the authorities about having Cairo and Gutman on the move. The novel shows Sam
after putting the receiver down to appear nervous he wet his lips and looked down at his hands. Their
palms were wet. He filled his deep chest with air. His eyes we glittering between straightened lids (p.
574). As to the film when we see Spade hang up the phone he briskly approaches Brigid trying to get
as much information out of her as he can before the police arrive in the film at 1:28:52. As we see in
the novel Hammett wanted to show Spade as being nervous for what is about to happen and for how
aggressive he will be in order to get all of the information needed prior to the police arriving. Huston
doesn t show any of that, but goes straight into getting all of the information out of Brigid as soon as
possible. Leaving a major lack in character for the film Spade as compared to the novel Spade. Next,
we follow to see Spade grabs Brigid and says G d damn you, talk! (p. 575) which shows Spade as a
dominate and demanding individual. The significance of him grabbing executes this notion of
dominance and the meaning of how important this is to Spade. In the film Spade at that moment wasn
t as forceful to get this information out of Brigid. Around 1:29:26 Spade was standing badgering
Brigid with question after question, in addition to asking rhetorical questions that Spade already knew
the answer for. Having Spade in the

3. Are Websites Beneficial For A Secondary Special Education...
For this assignment, I decided to use http://www.nsttac.org/ and http://www.ncset.org/ to research and
discuss. I believe that both websites would be beneficial for a secondary special education teacher for
many reasons. I was a little lost when researching the websites because I do not know what most of
the information is talking about, but I think a secondary special education teacher would. Both
websites had a lot of information on how to create opportunities for youth with disabilities to achieve
successful futures. The website, http://www.ncset.org/, focused on four major areas of national
significance for youth with disabilities and their families, which include: providing students with
disabilities with improved access and success in the secondary education curriculum, ensuring that
students achieve positive post school results in accessing postsecondary education, meaningful
employment, independent living and participation in all aspects of community life, supporting student
and family participation in educational and post school decision making and planning, and improving
collaboration and system linkages at all levels through the development of broad based partnerships
and networks at the national, state, and local levels. Given this information a secondary special
education teacher can look on this website for resources on secondary education, transition service
employment, service agencies, and other areas. It is provides a network of people who can assist a

4. President Nkrumah s The Fight Against Imperialism
President Nkrumah s ideology and ability to mobilize a continent of individuals was based heavily on
his dedication to inform the oppressed about the current war being waged. This new war expanded
across continents and was described as neocolonialism. President Nkrumah inspired further
generations of likeminded individuals such as Kwame Ture who adopted Nkrumah s first name. In
order to understand both Kwame Ture and Kwame Nkrumah s influence in the fight against
imperialism it is important to understand both men s definition of colonialism in Africa and The
Americas. Both individuals offer a way to destroy these mechanisms in hopes that African and Latin
American countries can find unity and freedom from Imperialism. President Nkrumah describes neo
colonialism as a mechanism existing through economic, political, religious, ideological, and cultural
means at the hands of the Western World and their pre existing colonizers. Neo colonialism is
regarded as the birth child of early colonialism by European and American countries. Colonialism
sucked the resources dry from the countries in which they occupied. Colonizers then sold the products
in their home countries, leaving little to spare for the Indian, African, and Latin American inhabitants
who continued to live in poverty. President Nkrumah describes this new form of colonialism as
switching tactics. He describes these imperialist tactics; as methods of promoting independence and
freedom when in reality they are

5. The State Of Eastland s Waste Disposal Regulation
SUMMARY OF ARGUMENT
The decision of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals should be affirmed. The state of Eastland s waste
disposal regulation is neither discriminatory nor protectionist. Historically, businesses and
professionals know that licensing requirements and authority belong solely to states and local
governments. A state government does not violate the commerce clause when it sets licensing
requirements for incineration and interment of fetal tissues pursuant to its autonomy and police
powers in carrying out local activities that have always been its traditional function to ensure the
health and safety of its citizens. Also, a state acts legitimately and fairly when having funded a public
facility, with local taxpayers money, for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This case is distinguishable from Carbone, Inc. v. Clarkstown. Indeed, it is hard to imagine two cases
that are factually more distinct, as Carbone involved a state favoring a single private business and our
case involves simply a government pursuing a legitimate interest, not for profit nor to favor any
private entity. C A Carbone v. Town of Clarkstown, 511 U.S. 383, 387 (1994). Petitioners concede that
they are strictly in the business for profit. And it s a widely known fact that when people engage in
endeavors solely for profit that usually remains their preoccupation. Besides, all private providers,
both in state and out of staters are free without restriction to operate in all other regions of the state
where there are no state run facilities. Nevertheless, the regulation is strictly nondiscriminatory and
absolutely does not impose an undue burden on interstate commerce far from it. Our instant case is
analogous to United Haulers Ass n v. Oneida Hertimer Solid Waste Mgmt. Auth. where the County
required all waste collectors to deliver all solid waste to processing facilities that are operated by a
public entity. There, the court held that such regulation did not violate the commerce clause because
the ordinance clearly benefited only a public facility, while treating all private companies exactly the
same. Like in United Haulers, the regulation here treats

6. The Right Influence
Film is a powerful medium to communicate through. Film can also be easily exploited. In the
beginning, the first inventors were not interested in film being a largely entertainment and cultural
phenomena but as a scientific breakthrough. Due to the introduction of film in the nineteenth century,
nationalism recently has been intensified by the increasing globalization of international film and
consequently resulting in totalitarian cinema which later directly reflects international cultures and
societies film.
During the Enlightenment era in eighteenth century Europe, experimentation in optics and physics led
to the developments of technological and mechanical concepts which the foundation of 19th century
motion visuals were derived from. Because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As film was introduced to China in the 1920s, China wanted to transform film into an indigenous art
form in the hope of finding a sense of cultural security (Hu 35). China constantly was being
bombarded with foreign intervention and China wanted to cling to their traditional values and ideas.
Further analysis in the various Chinese styles of nationalism demonstrates how political parties
affected filmmaking in the 1930s. The Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang Part, also called
the Nationalist Party, initiated the Left Wing Film Movement and the Nationalist Film Movement
presented two competing discourses of nationalism. The CCP rendered the class struggle with its
advocacy of nationalism through films while the KMT endorsed the idea of national survival by
advocating Confucian values to maintain Chinese tradition. In both situations, each party claimed that
they represented the interests of the entire nation through filmmaking (Hu 26). With these two parties
competing, film was only allowed limited

Growing up I always wondered what was going on before the year 2,000. What about year 1,000? I
had learned as far back as the 1700s but I still had not found what I really wanted to know. When I did
the reading for The Golden Age of Islamic Thought and Its Cultural Impact on Europe my question
was finally answered. During the Dark Ages Europe was at its all time low in allowance of intellectual
thinking. The sad thing being people were really dictating the way you think! While this was
happening Islam was thriving in more ways than one in the 1,000s I had always wondered about.
Although Islam has clearly had a significant influence on Europe, Europeans denied this fact, their
invents, thoughts, and ideas even being seemingly relevant all while their society was highly
influenced by said denied facts.
The historians and philosophers from Europe have denied Islam the credit that it really deserves for
the development of modern culture. One thing that is stupidly ignored is their impact on mathematics.
In today s modern word there is more math than you could ever imagine, very difficult math at that.
None of this would have truly been possible if it wasn t for Islam s contributions but Europe will
always turn their heads to this fact. The common European ego is too large to simply give credit
where credit is due (Something that Islam never had a problem doing). Europeans would rather deny
the facts than put their pride aside and realize that it is possible for others to be

A Streetcar Named Desire and Long Day s Journey into Night possess many similarities as well
different features. The first and most obvious difference is that A Streetcar Named Desire is a motion
picture, while Long Day s Journey into Night is a manuscript. The reason I mentioned this fact is
because with the motion picture you are capable of seeing the emotions, witnessing the violence;
although action can always be misconstrued. Long Day s Journey into Night you have to read the
emotions, and make assumptions instead of experiencing them personally; however they are clear and
direct. Blanche and Mary have similar bad nerves to each other; although I would like to say it is due

husbands James was an actor who is financially responsible, even though he is not to please with

Stella the same way James love Mary. Edmund went to the sanatorium because he had the case of

10. Persuasive Essay On Why Schools Should Have School Lunches
Schools should offer fast food options during lunch. This action would keep students on campus, give
the school profit, and create a variety within the cafeteria. Although fast food can also be very
unhealthy on a day to day basis, it would make schools a better place.
Depending on how one may look at the situation, serving fast food in schools have several advantages
and disadvantages. From a nutritional standpoint, fast food isn t given this a name for no reason. Many
items from this chain are considered highly processed. Some items, like diet soda, have no nutritional
value. Children who eat fast food items rather than fresh grown food, lean meats, and whole grains
don t have the balance one needs for a healthy diet. However, many companies in this industry give a
variety of healthy meals on their menu. Also, many companies such as Subway are considerably
healthy, yet considered a fast food. They even provide a variety of vegan friendly foods in the majority
of restaurants that are in the fast food chain. With that following statement, saying that all fast food is

11. Change In Malcolm Gladwell s The Tipping Point

Malcolm Gladwell s The Tipping Point is radical because he talks about how the environment can
change people behavior. The environment could have caused people to change for better or worst. For
example: When people were placed in an environment of filth they are more violent and hectic
causing the crime rate to increase. When you come from a bad neighborhood you are statistically more
likely to be dangerous and belligerent. If you were to place people into a different environment, you
can expect change (not saying it always work). Throughout the story Malcolm gives many examples
of change. He starts off by talking about four young men who were on a New York train. ... Show

The change came from simply fixing the trains, not from wanting to change but from cleaning up the
environment. Showing that they are more than what they see. Clean makes you feel better about
yourself as for dirty makes you feel scum like. So why not act how you feel? It is events like what I
stated above that helped the people to see that change can be just as simple as cleaning the train. Being
in an environment filled with filth, stench, and nothingness in the air, can lead you to doing bad things.
In the story four men were acting like they had something and when approached a man were then shot.
If you dig deeper, you truly find out the four young men didn t have an easy life. They came from a
horrible place. Somewhere less fortunate than they needed to be. That key setting caused them to react
and see things more angrily and act out as such.
Malcolm Gladwell writes:
The encounter between Bernie Goetz and those four youths on the subway: Allen, Ramseur, Cabey,
and Canty. At least two of them, according to some reports, appear to have been on drugs at the time
of the incident. They all came from the Claremont Village housing project in one of the worst parts of
the South Bronx. Cabey was, at the time, under indictment for armed robbery. Canty had a prior
felony for possession of stolen property. Allen had been previously arrested for attempted assault.

CHILDREN AFFECTED BY DIVORCE PROTECTING THEIR BEST INTERESTS On the 11th of
June, 1996, the Family Law Reform Act 1995 came into effect amending certain sections of the
Family Law Act 1975, in particular, those relating to the care of children involved in divorce
situations. The object of these amendments, according to the new act, was to ensure two things.
Firstly, that the children may receive adequate and proper parenting to help them achieve their full
potential, and secondly, to ensure that parents fulfil their duties, and meet their responsibilities,
concerning the care, welfare and development of their children. These recent amendments are clearly a
positive step forward for family law because the law has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the latter results, then in deciding what is best for the child, the court takes into consideration all or
most of the following factors the expressed wishes of the child, the child s relationship with each of
the parents, the effects of changes in the child s lifestyle, the capacity of each parent, the child s
maturity, sex, and background, the need to protect the child from abuse, any history of family violence
involving the child, and the parents attitude towards the child. This system of determining the child s
best interests is very effective because it is very comprehensive as a result of the many factors which
are taken into account, therefore leaving very little chance for the case to result in an unjust
judgement. In some cases, courts may rule that it is in the child s best interests if they do not have
regular contact with each parent. An example of such a case is Holswich v. O Farrell which took place
in the full court of the Family Court of Australia on the 26th of November, 1996. The father, Joe
William George Holswich, appealed against the decision made on the 17th of May, 1996, allowing
him contact with the child for only one hour every three months for one year and then one hour each
month after the first year. The main reason for the considerably small amount of contact with the child

Then, dynamic properties of the structure were obtained using modal property identification toolbox

following system identification algorithms: Frequency domain methods: the peak picking (PP), the

Then, the most plausible modes was chosen by comparison of MAC values of each date for each SI
algorithm. Since fundamental mode of the bridges always excited by the translational ground motions
during earthquakes, transverse components of mode shapes only were described in this research to
estimate the input of different bridge components on the bridge dynamic response. The frequency
values obtained by each method, except of SSI for summer dataset, at each season and their mean and
coefficient of correlation are shown in Table 3.1 and Table 3.2. From this figure, the values of
fundamental transverse frequency identified by each method are highly correlated for all methods, the
mean coefficient of variation was no more than 0.02. In addition, no relationship between the
transverse frequency and the depth of frozen soil at specific dates was observed. A high correlation
between mode shapes, with MAC value 0.95 or higher, was observed for two frequency domain
methods only, FDD and EFDD. Therefore, the average values of natural transverse frequency
calculated from the values identified by each method, 7.69 Hz and 2.85 Hz, and mode shapes obtained
by FDD technique (Figure 3.1) were chosen as a baseline experimental values for the further
calibration of the numerical models developed for winter and summer respectively. The bridge
transverse response is mainly symmetrical; the possible

18. The Framers Of The Constitution
Civics and Citizenship
The Framers of the Constitution looked to history for examples of governments that directly
represented the people. Early Romans wanted to create a lasting republic, a government in which
citizens rule themselves through elected representatives. A republic is a government in which citizens
rule themselves through elected representatives. Americans liked the roman form of government but
also knew that eventually the Roman republic became a dictatorship, a government in which one
person rules with all authority. The Framers wanted to avoid the Roman s fate. They wanted to create
a permanent government where the informed citizens ran their own government.
Another historic document the Founders looked to was the Magna Carta. In 1215, many of the
landowning gentry of England rebelled against the unpopular King John. In order to help restore peace
the rebels forced the king to sign the Magna Carta. It placed limits on the power of the English king
and made Parliament the ruling body in England. The English Bill of Rights (1689) was another
document the Framers looked to. It gave the citizens of England certain rights such as freedom of
speech and separation of powers.
John Locke published Two Treatise [essays] of Government in 1689. In these tow documents Locke
proposed that every person had the rights of life, liberty and property. The government cannot take
these unalienable rights away unless they have a reason. Locke also stated that the

Ben Mikaelsen s self realization novel Touching Spirit Bear is about a boy named Cole. Cole is a 15
year old, whom others see as angry and evil. They do not understand Cole is only using his anger in
the wrong way. The only people who understand Cole are two men, Garvey and Edwin. They
recognize the pain of having anger. Cole is banished to a remote island in Alaska after he attacks a boy
named Peter sending him to the hospital. Cole changes on the island helping himself and others along
his quest to self realization. A lesson Cole learns throughout the story is anger never leaves, but it
shapes one for the good or the bad; it is all a choice.
As the novel begins, Cole is bullying Peter, so Peter tells the school to get Cole in trouble. Instead of
apologizing, Cole becomes enraged and he, warned the skinny red haired boy, giving him a shove. He
laughed when he saw the fear in Peter s eyes... he attacked him and started hitting him hard in the face
with his bare fists (7). This line from the novel represents using anger in a horrid and gruesome
manner and Cole felt no remorse. Therefore, this segment of the book shows Cole before his

20. Metaphors In A Raisin In The Sun
Lorraine Hansberry considered lines from two Hughes poems to title her play A Raisin in the Sun.
Both Poems, Mother to Son and Harlem, connect to the play, however, Mother to Son is the better one
because there is much more content talked about in this poem. The struggle the mother went through
is crazy. The fact that she isn t broken down and that she tries to support her child shows a lot. Mother
and son have some connections. They are identical in many ways, but mostly on how outspoken the
mothers are with their sons shows the connection. In the poem Mother to Son , the mom talks to her
son about how life hasn t been easy for her. She uses the metaphor, Life for me, aint been no crystal
stair in reference to her life. This connects to A raisin in the sun and how sometimes Ruth couldn t
provide all the things that she wanted to for travis. Another metaphor lena uses is And places with no
carpet on the floor
Bare. But all the time, I se been a climbin on, . This shows that sometimes lena had to live in
conditions with bare feet on the floor. It was pretty harsh and yet she survived. This connects to A
raisin in the sun, Travis would ask Ruth for money and Ruth wouldn t have the money to supply. Ruth
would feel like she is a bad mother and still tries to help. Her husband comes in and supports and this
shows that the family is still pushing even when they are in bad conditions. Another way that shows
how mother to son is relatable to a raisin in the sun is in

22. Theme Of Gothic Elements In Masque Of The Red Death
Michael Ruiz once said, Everyone dies. There s no point in fighting it. In Masque of the Red Death by
Edgar Allan Poe, there is a disease that kills almost everyone in a country so the king brings all
survivors into a castle to prevent it from killing anyone else, although it still ends up getting in from a
ghost, and wipes everyone else out. In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe uses gothic
elements such as a gloom setting, supernatural beings, curses, and air of mystery and suspense.
Edgar Allan Poe uses many gothic elements in Masque of the Red Death, such as a gloomy setting. A
gloomy setting is described by having little color, no happiness, and decaying setting. The outside

There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.
Poe uses the disease as a curse, it eventually ends up killing everybody and there is no way to stop the
doom. It is used as a curse by showing it cannot be stopped and from it being created from a
supernatural being, which is the ghost who enters the castle and gives everyone the red death. The
curse is what the whole story is based on, and the reason everyone dies.
The fourth and final gothic element Edgar Allan Poe uses in Masque of the Red Death, is the air of
mystery and suspense. Poe does this by creating a gloomy setting and entering a ghost that creates
mystery because the readers cannot see his face or know what he is or what he is up to. Poe describes
him as, The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave.
There is many ways Poe shows the mystery and suspense, Poe also uses a lot of death and blood to
create a mystery because the reader doesn t know who is going to die next, neither does the characters
in the story.
In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, there are four gothic elements used, a gloomy
setting, supernatural beings, curses, and the air of mystery and suspense. These create a gothic theme
by making the setting gloomy and dark which makes the story unhappy and colorless, which forms the
gothicness of the story. The supernatural beings create a

The history of SyTech and Gene therapy
Gene therapy was introduced in 1985 by SyTech and has been the main priority of the company ever
since due to its promising future in science. One of the first human gene therapy procedures involved
injecting the correct ADA gene to a four year old girl with the ADA deficiency. Due to the success of
the procedure, the patient is now living a healthy life. The success marked an important landmark in
human history, one that has the potential to change the future. What is gene therapy?
In short, gene therapy is a method in which DNA Is used to fix a genetic problem. These problems can
include missing or genes that don t work. The right genes are delivered to the cell via harmless viruses
for their provirus properties. The viruses then insert the good copy of the gene into the patients DNA
where the cells machinery reads the information like a manual and makes RNA proteins so when it
divides, ideally, the problem will be fixed. There are two types f gene therapy: Germline (targets
egg/sperm cells; stops disease in its tracks) and somatic (targets somatic cells; after the disease is
active). The methods for gene therapy that are being tested include:
Replacing the non working copy of a gene with a healthier one
Bringing new genes entirely for those that don t exist
Bring a new gene to fight/fix the disease.

Our First Dinner
This morning, my cousins arrived at my house. Since then, the place has been bustling with noise, and
there has been a lot of shoving and roughhousing. Currently, we are getting ready for dinner. Let me
backtrack. Yesterday, my aunt called our house to ask my mom if she and her kids could visit. For a

aunt and uncle have four kids, and my parents have three. So a lot of people in one house. To top it all
off, it s the first week of summer break. Like I said, at the moment the house is in chaos with everyone
carrying food, utensils, and chairs around the kitchen. We are getting ready for our first meal together.
We went out for lunch so we didn t have to worry about making food. Now we do. Since most of us
kids don t know how to cook, we got pushed into the basement. So we are playing games while we
wait for the adults to get done with the food. We fight, we shove, and we punch. My family is really
rough, so when we get together, you can almost guarantee that there will be fighting. After what feels
like hours, we hear my mom yell, Kids, the food s ready! We all immediately stampede up the stairs,
trying to beat each other to the kitchen. Once we get there, we all fight over seats before we finally get
settled. My uncle says Grace and we all dig in.
So, how has everyone s summer been so far? my aunt questions. We reply with mumbles of Good and

36. How Did The Renaissance Start In Italy
The Renaissance was a period of time between the mid fourteenth century and mid sixteenth century
in which art, engineering, architecture, and music flourished, mainly due to engineers and artists. One
of the most debated questions that historians discuss about the Renaissance is why and how the
Renaissance started in Italy because there are no specific events that started the Renaissance. Rather, it
was a string of events with no clear beginnings except for basic ideas and theories. Wealth and
humanism started the Renaissance in Italy by providing a motive to learn, causing art and engineering
to flourish.

Because of his rejection of the medieval ways of thinking, his insistence of using thought and reason
became the basis of humanism. These [humanists] sought out and delved into classical texts and

most Italian humanists wanted to look at the literary and philosophical works of the ancient Romans

more importantly, learning. From inspecting the ancient world, Italian humanists could compare their
own civilization and give them a basis for which they could form opinions and criticize their own
civilization. Because of that, the method of criticism emerged. Eventually, most people during the
Renaissance reverted to the classical way of thinking. This impacted people, such as Niccolò

37. Analysis Of Lose Your Mother
Often the most important trait a person can posses is to be aware of their surroundings. If someone is
aware of their surroundings on a physical, mental and emotional level, they have the power to fully
immerse themselves in their experience, without hesitation or limitation. In Saidiya Hartman s memoir
Lose Your Mother, the reader is presented with an orator who lacks complete awareness of their
surroundings, which later translates to a lack of self awareness, while in both Jamaica Kincaid s and
Caryl Phillips respective memoirs the reader is presented with authors who are fully aware of their
surroundings and thus self aware as well. Immediately the reader is made aware that Hartman is
physically aware of her surroundings in Ghana, I chose Ghana because it possessed more dungeons,
prisons and slave pens than any other country in West Africa.. (Hartman 7). Hartman is physically
aware of her purpose in Ghana: she is here because it contains the most physical remnants of the slave
trade than most other countries in West Africa. Hartman know where she will travel while in Ghana,
Elmina, Salaga, Gwolu, and she knows she will find the physical remnants of the slave trade in these
places: slave forts, markets, roads and castles. Hartman finds these physical remains of slavery in
Elmina, the castle that once held slaves before they entered the middle passage, Salaga, the largest
slave market, and Gwolu, the wall that was used to keep slave traders away. Both Kincaid in her
memoir A Small Place and Phillips in his memoir The Atlantic Sound are similar to Hartman in this
way, as both possess intense awareness of their physical surroundings. Kincaids memoir, although
dealing with Antigua and not Ghana, contains awareness from the perspective of a native, Antigua is
beautiful. Antigua is too beautiful. Sometimes the beauty of it seems unreal (Kincaid 76). Kincaid
additionally addresses the physical remnants of slavery in Antigua, like Hartman, In the Antigua that I
knew we lived on a street named after a maritime criminal Horatio Nelson...In the middle of High
Street was the Barclays Bank... [who] were slave traders (Kincaid 24 26). Phillips also provides
insight to the tangible pieces of slavery, when discussing

equation for the income statement is revenue minus expenses equal net income. The next statement
produced is the statement of retained earnings. The statement of retained earnings starts out with the

from the previous month then subtracts the money paid out. The last document is the balance sheet. A
balance sheet contains a more detailed statement of each account balance. (Tracy, 2008).
