7. CBA
It is known as Computer-Based Testing (CBT), e-assessment, computerized
testing and computer-administered testing
It is a method of administering tests in which the responses are electronically
recorded, assessed, or both.
It is an assessment which is both delivered and marked by computer (JISC,
2007:6)
It may be a stand-alone system or a part of virtual learning environment,
possibly accessed via World Wide Web.
8. CBA
The use of digital
tools for
assessment-
related activity
9. Benef
its
Bull and McKenna (2004) cite the following reasons to use CBA:
To motivate students to learn
To encourage students to
practice skills
To increase feedback to
students and lecturers
To increase objectivity
and consistency
To decrease marking loads
10. Benef
its
convenience Consistent and reliable scoring
Immediate score
reporting
Enhance test security
Inclusivity and saves
time and energy
Advanced item types
Allow to re-use and
randomized within
given assessment
11. Considerations
• Setting up and using CBA may take more time in the early stages.
• Know how onscreen testing will fit into your school’s current assessment policy and whether
it is actually the most effective assessment tool.
• Since the marking scheme will be applied across all submissions, this must be rigorously
quality-checked before the assessment is released to students.
• Ensure that all learners have a similar level of familiarity with the devices to be used, to
decrease the likelihood that results are affected by their technological proficiency.
12. Applicati
ons
Diagnostic assessment
This allows to evaluate students' baseline
knowledge/understanding and, if appropriate, provide
feedback. It can also be used by staff to help identify
gaps in student understanding at a cohort level.
Formative assessment
CBA can be used to provide formative assessment, i.e.
assessment which is developmental for students' learning
but does not contribute to credit points.
Summative assessment
CBA can be used to provide summative assessment, i.e.
assessment is that which results in a final grade (and
feedback) which reflects the standard of achievement of
the student work against intended learning outcomes. A
broader range of scenarios can be presented than would
be possible in a paper-based exam, for example by
including videos and simulations.
13. Are all cba online assessments?
Offline assessments- these are the
assessments that are created on a
computer-based test software and
are reliable only on a single device.
These tests are offline, so a single
set of tests cannot be taken on two
devices simultaneously and the
responses are stored in a database.
Online assessments- online cba are
created using online assessment
software so they can be taken
anytime, anywhere, and on any
device.
