Compatibility refers to a monochrome TV receiver's ability to produce a black and white picture from a color television signal without modifications. Reverse compatibility is a color TV receiver's ability to produce a black and white picture from a standard monochrome signal without modifications. Both are possible because color TV transmission standards were designed to be compatible with existing monochrome TV receivers by using the same 7MHz channel bandwidth, 5.5MHz video bandwidth, and synchronization pulses as monochrome signals.
