Comparing The Works Of Bruckner And Richard Wagner
ruckner wrote the first version of the symphony in 1873. In September 1873, before the work was finished, Bruckner visited Richard Wagner, whom
he had first met in 1865 at the premiere of Tristan und Isolde in Munich.[4] Bruckner showed both his Second and Third symphonies to Wagner, asking
him to pick one he preferred. To Bruckner's delight, Wagner chose the Third, and Bruckner dedicated thesymphony to the master he highly respected.
After getting home, Bruckner continued to work on the symphony, finishing the finale on 31 December 1873.[5]
According to an anecdote, Bruckner and Wagner drank so much beer together that, upon arriving home, Bruckner realized that he had forgotten which
symphony Wagner had chosen. He wrote a letter back to

Concert Report: Mozart Symphony No. 40 The western classical concert that I have chosen to review is A Tale of Two Symphonies. This concert is
performed in the Avery Fisher hall within the Lincoln Center in New York City. It was performed on July 29, 2008. Theorchestra that is performing is
the 42nd Mostly Mozart Orchestra. The conductor is Louis LangrГ©e. The two pieces being performed in this concert is Mozart's Symphony No. 40
and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. The first piece that was played was Mozart's Symphony No.40. This is a beautiful piece of music. There are 38
players in the orchestra for this piece. And they all played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I feel that the fourteen members of chamber orchestra and the two vocalists did an outstanding job. This piece was well put together. I loved the
harmony that was brought forth between the orchestra and the vocalists. The two vocalists a tenor known as Paul Groves and a soprano known as
Anna Larson, did a beautiful job staying in tune. The way that their voices went back and forth in harmony was just beautiful. Although I enjoyed
both pieces of music I really enjoyed the works of Gustav Mahler and his piece Lied von der Erde. This piece is rich in drama. I feel that the texture
used is this song is imitative polyphony. I feel that there are various parts in this song that use the similar melodies. I feel that the harmony between
the two vocalists were right on with each other and the orchestra. You can hear the brass instruments in the very beginning of the songs then the
strings, wind instruments along with the piano and keyboards begin to make their entrance. They come together very strong but in a peaceful way at
first. Towards the middle of the song the tempo and rhythm really picks up (it seems as if all of their emotions are bursting out) then it slowly begins
to drop back to slower movements. You can really hear the strings during this time. But surprisingly enough just when you think the song is going to
end boom your hit again. This song keeps you on the edge of your

A Reflection Of Music : My Experience To Music
When it comes to music, I have never really studied it a whole lot. Taking this class is very different for me, but it's actually enjoyably. I never actually
thought about all the work it takes to understanding each piece, constructing the melody and symphony, and putting it all together to make it into
something that sounds absolutely beautiful. It's almost like magic watching everything come together. To begin with, I attended the concert at the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta Georgia on Peachtree Road. I sat in the Woodruff Center, seat section Orch L Row A Seat Number ten. I
attended this performance on Thursday, October 12th. The performance lasted around two hours or so. While attending this concert, I got to watch

As the night continued to go on I was absolutely amazed at the talent and music I heard. I couldn't believe I thought this was going to be absolutely
boring for me. At the end of the performance, I was truly amazed. I couldn't stop talking about what I had just witnessed. The performances were
amazing and each so beautiful and unique in many ways. I still couldn't understand how all of those people and instruments just come to together and
create masterpieces of music. I was engaged the whole performance and kept pointing out all the things I was enjoying to my boyfriend. He even had
a wonderful time as well. After completing my first concert I definitely can't wait to go to another one.
Ultimately, the entire orchestra was outstanding. The Bone Garden also known as the garden of death had two figures in motion. "One motion was
rising as the other was falling, to metaphorically depict the trajectory of life and death (Rainey)." This piece felt very dark and dramatic, but I could
feel ever emotion while listening to the orchestra play. The Scottish Worthies is a piece honoring figures from the Scottish Enlightenment. Stated in the
program, "Scottish Worthies is composed as a set of episodes/variations that seek to capture the spirit of these great figures from the Scottish
Enlightenment (Rainey)." I enjoyed listening to this piece, because it gave you a totally different outlook on life with its imagery.

The Performance Of The Symphony
I have never had the chance to sit and watch a symphony before. I have heard them in plays and other performances, but they have never been the main
production in something I have seen. It was very interesting to see the structure behind the sound. The amount of people and different instruments all
together making a cohesive piece of music was absolutely incredible. There appeared to be well over 50 musicians working together to produce
different sounds that fit together so tenaciously. Among the instruments involved in theorchestra, I noticed cellos, flutes, clarinets, cymbals,
tambourines, trumpets, violins, trombones, tubas, french horns, and even a few instruments that I could not recognize. The diversity in the instruments
created a strong yet effortless feeling in the listener. The music flowed so well that it seemed simple and easy, yet when I looked into the orchestra and
saw how many components go into the composition, it is clear that it is quite intricate. The symphony was set in a beautiful concert venue, the Boston
Symphony Hall. The high ceilings were dripping with elaborate chandeliers, creating beautiful lighting for the on stage performers. The chairs of the
instrumentalists were turned in a way so that all the performers could be viewed by the audience, and the conductors back was turned so he could
face his orchestra. The walls on both sides were lined with two levels of seats, and four rows of seats were organized in front of the stage. Four windows

Tchaikovsky's Romeo And Juliet Fantasy Overture : Analysis
1. In which era of Western art music were most of the works on the program composed? If there was an even balance between two or more eras, list
them all.
Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture was the first piece of music performed by the McGill Symphony Orchestra. The work premiered
on the16th of March 1870, but was only finalized 10 years late on the 10th of September 1880 (Elliott). Tchaikovsky was a romantic composer and
wrote his Fantasy Overture as a symphonic poem in sonata form in the romantic era.
Romeo and Juliet was followed up by R. Murray Schafer concerto for Harp and Orchestra. Born in 1933, R. Murray Schafer is a Canadian composer,
writer, music educator and environmentalist (Centre de Musique Canadienne). His concerto for Harp and Orchestra was composed in 1987, making it
fall under contemporary western art music.
After a short intermission, the orchestra played Jean Sibelius's fifth Symphony in E–flat major. The symphony originally was commissioned by the
Finnish government during the Finnish civil war in honor of Sibelius's 50th birthday. First performed in 1915, it was finalized in 1919. At this time,
Debussy and Ravel had already introduced impressionism to western art music and Stravinsky had performed his infamous Rite of Spring ballet in
Paris. Even though Sibelius's fifth was written after most musicologist agree that the romantic period had ended, it is hard to categorize his work as
anything other than Late Romantic Nationalist music.

Beethoven Descriptive Writing
Gentle and slow was the music, with an occasional jump in volume as the orchestra played in full swing. The sounds of flutes, clarinets, and other
wind instruments can be heard in the background, adding a sweet harmony to the strength of the strings. The deepness of the cello gives a strong base
in which the other instruments can build on. The bass reaches your heart and makes it tremble, while the treble reaches your soul and lifts you to the
sky. The symphony of Beethoven could be heard throughout the entire house, bouncing from one room to another and finally reaching its way to the
kitchen.

She perked up at the sound of the small door opening and the plate sliding into the room. She launched forward like a ravenous dog, tearing into the

tried to retreat back to her corner, but she collapsed before she was even halfway there.
Opening the door, the man walked in and stood over the girl, staring at her and contemplating what he was about to do. He grabbed onto one of her
arms, swung it around, and lifted her onto his shoulder. Heading up the stairs and down the hall, he entered into one of the many rooms in the house.
The room was extravagant and large; containing a similar crystal chandelier to what was in the hall, a fireplace, a large aquarium, and a large walk–in
closet. The bed was large enough that 5 people could use it and still be comfortable, and it was made perfectly with golden pillows and Egyptian
cotton sheets. The room itself was extremely organized and appeared to have been left that way for some

Symphony And Chorale Concert Review: A Night At The Symphony
A Night at the Symphony
"Real music is always, revolutionary, for it cements the ranks of the people; it arouses them and leads them onward," claimed Dmitri Shostakovitch.
Composers create music to influence but also to entertain people. On November 4, 2017, I attended the Midland–Odessa Symphony & Chorale concert
at Wagner NoГ«l Performing Arts Center, which was conducted by Gary Lewis.
During the performance, the orchestra performed works by several composers: Giuseppe Verdi's Overture to La forza del destino, Dmitri
Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 op. 107, and Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, op. 95 "From the New World." Although I was seated in Row 5,
seat 39 in the Mezzanine, I was able to experience the wonderful music because of the venue's acoustics. The Wagner–Noel Performing Arts Center had
a great attendance that evening. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The overture was written in the Romantic time period; the dynamics of the music were quieter (mezzo piano) and slower tempo (andante) than I
expected. The tempo accelerated (allegro) with an anticipation of a climax in this first movement. The fortissimo finale included the brass section of
French horns, trumpets, trombones, and tubas, and the percussion section of timpani and cymbals. This excellently played piece was one of my
favorites because it flowed from the serene to a lively rhythm.
Next, Amy Huzjak, the cellist, and the orchestra minus the horn section performed Shastoakovich's cello concerto. Huzjak's cello gave the composition
a haunting and mournful tone. As the music filled the hall, the addition of an instrument was obvious; a Celesta added a unique pitch. This was my
least favorite piece of the night; perhaps, the harsh sadness of the music put me at

Serebrier 9th Symphony
A bit close to a decade ago, I confessed to a friend and fellow reviewer, Julian Grant, who graced these Amazon pages with his own informative and
thought–provoking reviews I took the pleasure in reading, of how dissatisfied I was in music programmes particularly in America's concert halls. I was
ranting about how too little we were exposed to the great composers like Glazunov, Atterberg, Nielsen, Popov, Myaskovsky, and others and the need to
rectify that in part by not overplaying the familiar Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Beethoven, et al. in these halls. But Julian Grant put the matter into perspective
in reminding me that repeated listening is a complex ingredient in music appreciation. It is indeed amazing, now that I am thinking about it, of how...

It is indeed a despondent, anguish work, written (in 1910 originally for piano) at the time in Russian history where violence and uncertainties
abounded. Its bleak language is very much akin to that of his Two Prelude–Improvisations (1918) for pianoforte where conditions were even more
precarious. Truth to tell, I cannot think of a more striking, penetrating orchestral realization of the work's profound sense of melancholy and dreariness
than Gavriil Yudin's. And Serebrier brings these attributes movingly, with the menacing flutes, prominent in the middle allegro moderato section, that
are perfectly caught. Come to think of it, it would've been interesting if Glazunov's dramatic overture "The Song of Destiny" is included here, for it too
shows the composer's changing musical persona under the conditions he was in.
But be that as it may, this album, extremely well recorded and reverberant, caps what is now the most absorbing, revelatory, thought–provoking,
satisfyingly searching Glazunov symphony cycle to date (and imagine that admirable sense of preparation and knowledge of these symphonies in the
performances of them that took place in just four days – June 2–5, 2009). And while some will take issue with Serebrier's essay where he uses the
Bernstein/Mahler series as an example of how much of a revelation a series like this is (or how much it can be), I for one will not pose an

The Symphony Orchestra At The Usf Concert Hall
On the afternoon of November 23rd, there was a performance by the USF Symphony Orchestra at the USF Concert Hall. Their performance, which
was masterful from beginning to end, featured guest artists Jay Hunsberger on the tuba and Dolly Roberts on the harp. The performance began with
Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland, a piece that started with a bang. The pang of a gong, and the beat of the drums, immediately
captured and captivated the audience from the start. The slow build that led up to the trumpets and other brass instruments folding in, possessed an
almost militaristic feel. Upon looking into the composer, it was no wonder why the triumphant sounds produced by the brass instruments came off
as militaristic. Copland composed the piece during World War II. According to Elizabeth Bergman Crist, Copland: " . . . committed himself to
creating music at once unabashedly modern he committed himself to creating music at once unabashedly modern and identifiably American. The
'desire to be American was symptomatic of the period,' he wrote in a later reminiscence. He recalled being 'anxious to write a work that would
immediately be recognized as American in character' and so turned to jazz as 'an easy way to be American in musical terms.' " ("Music for the
Common Man: Aaron Copland During the Depression and War," p. 3). It is obvious that Copland accomplished his goal of creating "American"
music. Fanfare for the Common Man is an iconic piece, often played in movies

6, also composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Symphony No. 6 is also known as the Pastoral Symphony, this symphony includes five movements
unlike the typical traditional four movement symphonies, as expected from Beethoven, the one who loved to break rules in the world of music.
Besides composing music all day every day, Beethoven also loved to walk in country and enjoy the peacefulness of nature. The very first rough draft
for Symphony No. 6 was composed while he was out in the rural area, which explains the origin of the ideas behind the symphony. The Allegro Ma
Non Troppo movement is the first movement of Symphony No. 6, it describes the cheerful pleasant feeling that one should enjoy while staying in the
countryside. Most of the melodies in this movement are considered as conjunct, with this feature in the movement, it really gives a smooth and gentle

Beethoven's Heroic 3rd Symphony
During the nineteenth century, the musical canon emerged as a list of works permanently established as being of the highest quality. While music
was commonly only heard once or twice, canons were significant enough to be heard over and over again. In Lecture 5, Beethoven's "Heroic" 3rd
Symphony was shown to be critiqued as being too heavy and long, unendurable, and not entertaining. In "Museum Pieces," J. Peter Burkholder
indicates that the only works appropriate to be performed were museum pieces, or musical works with lasting value, because of their distinctive
musical personality, familiarity, and preservation of works of revered dead composers (Burkholder). Historicists were composers who wrotemusic for
museums, which concert halls became. They maintained the "tradition of European art music, particularly its aesthetic assumptions and its
understanding of the relationship between artist and audience, and for distinguishing their own music stylistically from other composers" (Burkholder ...

Johannes Brahms was one of the first German composers to grow alongside the musical canon and "musical museum." He had a familiarity with
established composers including Beethoven, Haydn, and J.S. Bach. Beethoven's legacy of masterworks intimidated Brahms–over 60 percent of
orchestra performances comprised of Beethoven's works–and even asserted that he would "never compose a symphony" (Frisch 178). Critics were
harsh on new symphonies, comparing them to Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn's masterworks, and it was not until his forties when he wrote his first
symphony. Brahms' symphonies were influenced by specific past musical masterworks, including J.S. Bach's Partita for Solo Violin No. 2 and the
Finale of Beethoven's Eroica, and while not particularly interesting at first, his symphonies were well–received by the audience and

The Influences Of Mahler 's Work As A Conductor And Composer
How does one codify the influences of Mahler's work as a conductor and composer? As Gustav Mahler is well known for his conducting, he is best
known for his skills as a composer. "Mahler 's interpretative style enabled him, undistracted by the army of gossipers who in all walks of life gather
round the success–seekers, to develop, to grow, to mature, to live his works and to create, as Schubert created his songs, Bruckner his symphonies and
Masses, and Wagner his music dramas" (Grange). However, Leonard Bernstein sometimes felt (according to PBS ' American Masters video on
Bernstein) like he had become Mahler in his performances. Gustav Mahler has become an iconic figure in the eyes of other conductors/composers,
because it helped them become masters of their own works with the influential ideas of Mahler.
Born on July 7, 1860, in Kalischt, Bohemia, Gustav Mahler was a late–Romantic composer and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a
composer, Mahler acted as a bridge between the 19th–century Austro–German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. While in his
lifetime his status as a conductor was established beyond question, his own music gained wide popularity only after periods of relative neglect
which included a ban on its performance in much of Europe during the Nazi era. However, Mahler also was a Jew, and Jews in the region were
associated by ethnic Czechs with Germans. Mahler's famous quote is: "I am thrice homeless, as a native of

into the show room.
My seat was about mid–way down middle level of seats, and almost in line with the center stage. As I observed the room, the first thing I noticed was

How Dmitri Shostakovich Adhere From The Conventions And...
In this essay I will be discussing the extent that Dmitri Shostakovich adhered to and rebelled from the conventions and traditions that were normalized
in classical music and I will offer varied examples of the many times Shostakovich has obeyed and dissented within music throughout his career. The
career span of Shostakovich extends from 1926 when he presented his first major work, Symphony No.1 to 1970 when he presented Quartet No. 7.
Born Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich on the 25th September, 1906, in St. Petersburg, Russia, the composer began his descent into classical music
at the age of 9, before later moving on to study at the Petrograd conservatory. Throughout his life he compiled 15 symphonies, 15 string quartets and
36 film scores as well as many other compositions. Within his musical work and the course of his career Shostakovich managed to both adhere to
traditions set within classical music as well as dissent from them, I will be exploring these.
I would first like to address what traditions are associated with classical music to highlight how Shostakovich dissented from these.
I will begin by briefly explaining the definition of chamber music, the definition of chamber music is "Instrumental music played by a small ensemble,
with one player to a part, the most important form being the string quartet." (www.oxforddictionaries.com)
Traditionally chamber music was often intended for a small and intimate audience rather than for an orchestral performance that

Music And Its Influence On Music Essay
Which do you prefer "cultivated" or "vernacular" that is the question? Music, the idea of using sounds for thoughts. Cultivated music can be defined
in many different ways, although it is defines as being music that comes from another country, it is also defined as music that is consciously well put
together. The word culture is almost visible. However, the term "cultivated" brings a deep contrast to that of "vernacular". Vernacular can be defined
as music of the present place. It will be safe to say that cultivated music carries over into Vernacular music. Cultivated can also be described as
imported music or brought over music. For example, Beethoven Symphony No 9, which sounds like the telling of a story of conquest, has been
performed in many places around the world. Vernacular music can be thought of as music that has been created and raised within a country. Whether
you listen to rap music or not, some critics say the sound changed and is not the same. For instance, taking into consideration culture and history; the
music of 2Pac Shakur was said to be, too politically charged, while also discussing social issues that haunted the black community. Although Beethoven
Symphony No 9 is a cultivated piece, and the vernacular piece being from Pac; both music has the same militaristic approach in style. As said before,
taking culture and history into consideration; there are comparisons as well as differences.

Aaron Copland's The Four Seasons
On Saturday, February 10th, 2018, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra performed at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The program included
Aaron Copland's masterpiece, Appalachian Spring as well as The Four Seasons, written by Antonio Vivaldi. Prior to the concert at 7:30pm, Maestro
David Stewart Wiley invited members of the community to attend an educational discussion about the program repertoire. He explained the emotional
authority Copland is able to capture through his work, Appalachian Spring. The beautiful ballet was composed for Martha Graham, one of the principal
modern American dancers of the twentieth century. The piece was based upon the life of a pioneer in the springtime at his new cottage in
Pennsylvania. The music expresses the journey and emotions of the pioneer and his new wife. During the first half, Appalachian ... Show more content

The first movement, "Spring," in E Major represents the birdsong of the season. The solo violin is supported by two other violin soloists, Jorge Ochoa
and Martin Irving. Unfortunately, the cohesiveness between the three violins was slightly off in tempo. However, they quickly recovered representing
a high level of musicianship. Next, "Summer," demonstrates the intense heat and storms by the G Minor key. Takayama imitates the goldfinch,
turtledove, and cuckoo on her violin while the orchestra imitates buzzing insects. Later, in F Major, "Autumn," consists of the theme of a drunken solist
which provides extreme freedom in the music. Lastly, the terrifying season of "Winter" voices the frozen water and bitter cold of the outside air. The
instruments begin by conversing in F Minor prior to the virtuosic entrance of solist, Akemi Takayama. The second movement switches to E–flat Major,

I attended the University Symphony Orchestra's "An Evening of Handel, Schubert, and Haydn" on Thursday, September 30, 2003 in the
Daniel Recital Hall. The hall was much more crowded than I expected. At the beginning of the concert, the orchestra was seated on the stage; the men
wore tuxedos, and the women wore black dresses or pants. The concertmaster came out to tune the orchestra, and then the conductor made his entrance
and gave a brief description of the piece that was about to be played.

The melody has an ascending shape as it moves in a crescendo. The fast tempo of this section creates an exciting and energetic mood. The Lentement
section has a slow pace and is played in a minor key. It is homophonic and in duple meter. The tempo creates a smooth and relaxing mood. This section
features a decrescendo and is conjunct with a relatively narrow range. Finally, the Allegro section is repeated.
Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B minor was composed during the Romantic era. The instruments heard include the trombone, flute, oboe,
bassoon–members of the aerophone family–as well as the violin, viola, cello, and double bass–all chordophones. This piece has an overall homophonic
texture. The genre is a symphony, which is divided into two movements: Allegro moderato and Andante con moto. The Allegro moderato follows
sonata–allegro form. There are two themes presented, and the movement is in triple meter in a minor key. It begins at a soft (piano) dynamic level and
grows in a crescendo. It is generally conjunct with a narrow range that eventually expands into a wide range. The softness opening creates a dramatic
atmosphere filled with emotion. This movement illustrates a recapitulation–the restatement of themes, since the main two themes recur throughout the
piece.

The Concert Hall, Raleigh, Concert, By Paul Randall And...
The concert took place on November 4, 2016 in Meymandi Concert Hall, Raleigh. In concert, I had enjoyed a lot. Especially the Saxophone and a
piano subsequently switched the tune of the tune as if they were dancing like two lovers. As the saxophone took the airs as well as the piano and other
instruments within the ensemble were in accompaniment for the love of the tune the texture altered within the tune. The tempo, which was always
steady appeared to get quicker like a pulse by the climax of the tune. It was also at this point the dynamics of the tune were increasingly becoming
louder until all instruments met using a bag on top and then altered the dynamics again to a reasonable degree until the tune ended. "Billy the Kid,"

The tune was hot and enthusiastic and shown dialogue without using any words. The ensemble played this piece by Cassia Lee supplied the
drawn–out conversation that sounded like twirling and dancing in the moonlight with the solo as well as steadiness. This tune reminded me of "My
Heart Will Go On" in that a story is told of the instrumental nature of it, just as much as when the lyrics are being sung by Celine Dion. I found
listening to this tune a rewarding experience, and it turned out to be a wonderful start to the jazz concert in that it was not unfamiliar to the crowd.
"Waltz for Debby' got me question why someone would write this kind of old and whom Debby was –sounding tune for someone he or she loved. It 's
really difficult for me to advocate this song to anybody, for I lacked the depth of the other tunes through the entire evening and believed it was boring.
"Ancient Memories" was a piece that is wonderful. The tune was enjoyment and I loved listening to the changes over and over again, although the tune
had lots of repetition. The Jazz Ensemble concert at Tarleton was an enjoyable evening full of intellectually exciting encounters ofmusic and excellent
music that I wouldn 't have listened to if not for this duty. Diversification is an important lesson to learn when seeing music because all music has roots
from a different music genre and understanding this makes you more diversified as somebody.

Alexander Glazunov Research Paper
Alexander Glazunov was one of the many talented, Russian composers of the romantic period. He was only a boy of nine years when he started
playing piano, which he was naturally gifted at; he started composing his own music at the age of eleven. When his talent was discovered by the
former head of The Russian Five, Mily Balakirev, news spread quickly to the famed composer Nikolai Rimsky–Korsakov who sought to meet this
young, high school aged, composer. Glazunov was taught privately by Rimsky–Korsakov at the conservatory of St. Petersburg; Rimsky said that "His

He contributed to Russian music in more ways than one, but the way that most people would agree that he helped was that he kept nationalism strong
during the roughest times of WW1 and the Russian revolutions. His traditionally Russian sound was inspired by the nationalistic Balakirev, with the
fabulous orchestration of Rimsky–Korsakov, the larger–than–life sound of Borodin, shaped by the beautifully lyrical sound of Tchaikovsky, and
structured with the potent counterpoint of Sergei Taneyev. Glazunov remains one of the most well known Russian composers of his time, and his
legacy lives on in the beautiful modern recordings of his many symphonies, string quartets, ballets, and concerti. He will always hold a place in the
heart of the national Russian sound, with the echoes of the grand halls of the Russian Music Society concerts, his soul rings in his music, untouched by
the harsh dissonance that so oft is felt in society

stage who were wearing formal black clothes, some of the musicians started working on the passages they needed to polish up before the
performance, with no regard for what anyone else is practicing. With time, the hall started to fill up and just before start, I could see that it's a full

attended the Latin grade school Tirocinium, but in 1781, at the age of 10, Beethoven withdrew from the school to study full–time under the Court

I enjoyed this because it was easier to understand and made more sense. Compared to Apres by Franck Krawczyk which was came off as a collection
of random sounds the Brahms's piece flowed together nicely and felt more uniformed. Symphony No.2 in D major, Op 73 by Johannes Brahms is an
estimated 46 minute piece that is composed of four movements. The first movement is in Allegro non troppo, the second movement– Adagio non

era. Although my program didn't outright state what the piece was about, it did gave off a nature like vibe. The nature vibe I got from the piece is a
prime aspect of Romantic music, which was all about nature and the supernatural. As mentioned in my program a key feature of Brahms Symphony
No.2 in D major, Op 73 is its similarity to Beethoven's Symphony no.6 in F major, Op 68 (Pastoral Symphony). Both works give off a feeling of
nature. However Beethoven's piece lets the audience know what it is

Tchaikovsky Symphony 6 Essay
General reaction: I was fascinated by the magnificence of David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center and elated by the magnitude and grandeur of the sound
that the New York Philharmonic succeeded to produce.
Composition I liked best: The piece that enchanted me most was Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74 "Pathetique" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a
four–movement work composed of Adagio – Allegro non troppo in sonata form, Allegro con grazia in ternary form, Allegro molto vivace in sonata
form, and Adagio lamentoso in ternary form with diverse tempos. The symphony was composed between February and the end of August 1893 and
premiered close to the time of Tchaikovsky's death. Tchaikovsky dedicated that work to his nephew Bob Davydov. The subtitle Pathetique (infused
with pathos, full of feelings) was suggested by the composer's brother shortly after the symphony's premiere. The last symphony by one of the greatest

For a reason the composer considered Symphony No. 6 the best work he had ever produced. It arose slowly from emptiness with the unexpected
sound of divided double basses and a solo bassoon, enhanced by divided violas, followed by gloomy comments from the woodwinds, before swiftly
changing into an edgy Allegronontroppo. Later it transformed into a blusterous section that recalled a Russian liturgical chant. The second movement
accented the idiosyncrasy of the work, resembling a charming waltz while in fact it was not. The following scherzo grew rapidly into a march that
smashed fiercely until the very conclusion. The finale of the symphony was characterized by an insistence on the minor mode and a closure perishing

Beethoven's 9th Symphony Analysis
This production of Beethoven's 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The
Texas Tech University Choir. The performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in
the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The
audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience's
reactions to the ends of movements. The long–standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and
diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock Symphony
Orchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance
the amount of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size and
age, however, this audience's reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining
members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts.
These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not
only do these translate to distractions for the performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the
intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction can also take away and distract from the
atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a relatively small and intimate concert hall.
Because this concert was only a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, I will react to movements two and four, the Scherzo and Recitative
respectively. The Scherzo (second) movement was characterized by Beethoven's ability to keep the constant presto eighth–note motive throughout the

Comparing The Works Of Bruckner And Richard Wagner

  • 1. Comparing The Works Of Bruckner And Richard Wagner ruckner wrote the first version of the symphony in 1873. In September 1873, before the work was finished, Bruckner visited Richard Wagner, whom he had first met in 1865 at the premiere of Tristan und Isolde in Munich.[4] Bruckner showed both his Second and Third symphonies to Wagner, asking him to pick one he preferred. To Bruckner's delight, Wagner chose the Third, and Bruckner dedicated thesymphony to the master he highly respected. After getting home, Bruckner continued to work on the symphony, finishing the finale on 31 December 1873.[5] According to an anecdote, Bruckner and Wagner drank so much beer together that, upon arriving home, Bruckner realized that he had forgotten which symphony Wagner had chosen. He wrote a letter back to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Concert Report Mozart Essay Tannya Trudeau 4135080 Professor Grant Musi200 D004 Fall10 15 January 2011 Concert Report: Mozart Symphony No. 40 The western classical concert that I have chosen to review is A Tale of Two Symphonies. This concert is performed in the Avery Fisher hall within the Lincoln Center in New York City. It was performed on July 29, 2008. Theorchestra that is performing is the 42nd Mostly Mozart Orchestra. The conductor is Louis LangrГ©e. The two pieces being performed in this concert is Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. The first piece that was played was Mozart's Symphony No.40. This is a beautiful piece of music. There are 38 players in the orchestra for this piece. And they all played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel that the fourteen members of chamber orchestra and the two vocalists did an outstanding job. This piece was well put together. I loved the harmony that was brought forth between the orchestra and the vocalists. The two vocalists a tenor known as Paul Groves and a soprano known as Anna Larson, did a beautiful job staying in tune. The way that their voices went back and forth in harmony was just beautiful. Although I enjoyed both pieces of music I really enjoyed the works of Gustav Mahler and his piece Lied von der Erde. This piece is rich in drama. I feel that the texture used is this song is imitative polyphony. I feel that there are various parts in this song that use the similar melodies. I feel that the harmony between the two vocalists were right on with each other and the orchestra. You can hear the brass instruments in the very beginning of the songs then the strings, wind instruments along with the piano and keyboards begin to make their entrance. They come together very strong but in a peaceful way at first. Towards the middle of the song the tempo and rhythm really picks up (it seems as if all of their emotions are bursting out) then it slowly begins to drop back to slower movements. You can really hear the strings during this time. But surprisingly enough just when you think the song is going to end boom your hit again. This song keeps you on the edge of your ... • 3. A Reflection Of Music : My Experience To Music When it comes to music, I have never really studied it a whole lot. Taking this class is very different for me, but it's actually enjoyably. I never actually thought about all the work it takes to understanding each piece, constructing the melody and symphony, and putting it all together to make it into something that sounds absolutely beautiful. It's almost like magic watching everything come together. To begin with, I attended the concert at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta Georgia on Peachtree Road. I sat in the Woodruff Center, seat section Orch L Row A Seat Number ten. I attended this performance on Thursday, October 12th. The performance lasted around two hours or so. While attending this concert, I got to watch Michael ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the night continued to go on I was absolutely amazed at the talent and music I heard. I couldn't believe I thought this was going to be absolutely boring for me. At the end of the performance, I was truly amazed. I couldn't stop talking about what I had just witnessed. The performances were amazing and each so beautiful and unique in many ways. I still couldn't understand how all of those people and instruments just come to together and create masterpieces of music. I was engaged the whole performance and kept pointing out all the things I was enjoying to my boyfriend. He even had a wonderful time as well. After completing my first concert I definitely can't wait to go to another one. Ultimately, the entire orchestra was outstanding. The Bone Garden also known as the garden of death had two figures in motion. "One motion was rising as the other was falling, to metaphorically depict the trajectory of life and death (Rainey)." This piece felt very dark and dramatic, but I could feel ever emotion while listening to the orchestra play. The Scottish Worthies is a piece honoring figures from the Scottish Enlightenment. Stated in the program, "Scottish Worthies is composed as a set of episodes/variations that seek to capture the spirit of these great figures from the Scottish Enlightenment (Rainey)." I enjoyed listening to this piece, because it gave you a totally different outlook on life with its imagery. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Performance Of The Symphony I have never had the chance to sit and watch a symphony before. I have heard them in plays and other performances, but they have never been the main production in something I have seen. It was very interesting to see the structure behind the sound. The amount of people and different instruments all together making a cohesive piece of music was absolutely incredible. There appeared to be well over 50 musicians working together to produce different sounds that fit together so tenaciously. Among the instruments involved in theorchestra, I noticed cellos, flutes, clarinets, cymbals, tambourines, trumpets, violins, trombones, tubas, french horns, and even a few instruments that I could not recognize. The diversity in the instruments created a strong yet effortless feeling in the listener. The music flowed so well that it seemed simple and easy, yet when I looked into the orchestra and saw how many components go into the composition, it is clear that it is quite intricate. The symphony was set in a beautiful concert venue, the Boston Symphony Hall. The high ceilings were dripping with elaborate chandeliers, creating beautiful lighting for the on stage performers. The chairs of the instrumentalists were turned in a way so that all the performers could be viewed by the audience, and the conductors back was turned so he could face his orchestra. The walls on both sides were lined with two levels of seats, and four rows of seats were organized in front of the stage. Four windows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Tchaikovsky's Romeo And Juliet Fantasy Overture : Analysis 1. In which era of Western art music were most of the works on the program composed? If there was an even balance between two or more eras, list them all. Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture was the first piece of music performed by the McGill Symphony Orchestra. The work premiered on the16th of March 1870, but was only finalized 10 years late on the 10th of September 1880 (Elliott). Tchaikovsky was a romantic composer and wrote his Fantasy Overture as a symphonic poem in sonata form in the romantic era. Romeo and Juliet was followed up by R. Murray Schafer concerto for Harp and Orchestra. Born in 1933, R. Murray Schafer is a Canadian composer, writer, music educator and environmentalist (Centre de Musique Canadienne). His concerto for Harp and Orchestra was composed in 1987, making it fall under contemporary western art music. After a short intermission, the orchestra played Jean Sibelius's fifth Symphony in E–flat major. The symphony originally was commissioned by the Finnish government during the Finnish civil war in honor of Sibelius's 50th birthday. First performed in 1915, it was finalized in 1919. At this time, Debussy and Ravel had already introduced impressionism to western art music and Stravinsky had performed his infamous Rite of Spring ballet in Paris. Even though Sibelius's fifth was written after most musicologist agree that the romantic period had ended, it is hard to categorize his work as anything other than Late Romantic Nationalist music. ... • 6. Beethoven Descriptive Writing Gentle and slow was the music, with an occasional jump in volume as the orchestra played in full swing. The sounds of flutes, clarinets, and other wind instruments can be heard in the background, adding a sweet harmony to the strength of the strings. The deepness of the cello gives a strong base in which the other instruments can build on. The bass reaches your heart and makes it tremble, while the treble reaches your soul and lifts you to the sky. The symphony of Beethoven could be heard throughout the entire house, bouncing from one room to another and finally reaching its way to the kitchen. She kicked the plate away and tried to retreat back to her corner, but she collapsed before she was even halfway there. Opening the door, the man walked in and stood over the girl, staring at her and contemplating what he was about to do. He grabbed onto one of her arms, swung it around, and lifted her onto his shoulder. Heading up the stairs and down the hall, he entered into one of the many rooms in the house. The room was extravagant and large; containing a similar crystal chandelier to what was in the hall, a fireplace, a large aquarium, and a large walk–in closet. The bed was large enough that 5 people could use it and still be comfortable, and it was made perfectly with golden pillows and Egyptian cotton sheets. • 7. Symphony And Chorale Concert Review: A Night At The Symphony A Night at the Symphony "Real music is always, revolutionary, for it cements the ranks of the people; it arouses them and leads them onward," claimed Dmitri Shostakovitch. Composers create music to influence but also to entertain people. On November 4, 2017, I attended the Midland–Odessa Symphony & Chorale concert at Wagner NoГ«l Performing Arts Center, which was conducted by Gary Lewis. During the performance, the orchestra performed works by several composers: Giuseppe Verdi's Overture to La forza del destino, Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 op. 107, and Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, op. 95 "From the New World." Although I was seated in Row 5, seat 39 in the Mezzanine, I was able to experience the wonderful music because of the venue's acoustics. The Wagner–Noel Performing Arts Center had a great attendance that evening. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The overture was written in the Romantic time period; the dynamics of the music were quieter (mezzo piano) and slower tempo (andante) than I expected. The tempo accelerated (allegro) with an anticipation of a climax in this first movement. The fortissimo finale included the brass section of French horns, trumpets, trombones, and tubas, and the percussion section of timpani and cymbals. This excellently played piece was one of my favorites because it flowed from the serene to a lively rhythm. Next, Amy Huzjak, the cellist, and the orchestra minus the horn section performed Shastoakovich's cello concerto. Huzjak's cello gave the composition a haunting and mournful tone. As the music filled the hall, the addition of an instrument was obvious; a Celesta added a unique pitch. This was my least favorite piece of the night; perhaps, the harsh sadness of the music put me at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Serebrier 9th Symphony A bit close to a decade ago, I confessed to a friend and fellow reviewer, Julian Grant, who graced these Amazon pages with his own informative and thought–provoking reviews I took the pleasure in reading, of how dissatisfied I was in music programmes particularly in America's concert halls. I was ranting about how too little we were exposed to the great composers like Glazunov, Atterberg, Nielsen, Popov, Myaskovsky, and others and the need to rectify that in part by not overplaying the familiar Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Beethoven, et al. in these halls. But Julian Grant put the matter into perspective in reminding me that repeated listening is a complex ingredient in music appreciation. It is indeed amazing, now that I am thinking about it, of how... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is indeed a despondent, anguish work, written (in 1910 originally for piano) at the time in Russian history where violence and uncertainties abounded. Its bleak language is very much akin to that of his Two Prelude–Improvisations (1918) for pianoforte where conditions were even more precarious. Truth to tell, I cannot think of a more striking, penetrating orchestral realization of the work's profound sense of melancholy and dreariness than Gavriil Yudin's. And Serebrier brings these attributes movingly, with the menacing flutes, prominent in the middle allegro moderato section, that are perfectly caught. Come to think of it, it would've been interesting if Glazunov's dramatic overture "The Song of Destiny" is included here, for it too shows the composer's changing musical persona under the conditions he was in. But be that as it may, this album, extremely well recorded and reverberant, caps what is now the most absorbing, revelatory, thought–provoking, satisfyingly searching Glazunov symphony cycle to date (and imagine that admirable sense of preparation and knowledge of these symphonies in the performances of them that took place in just four days – June 2–5, 2009). And while some will take issue with Serebrier's essay where he uses the Bernstein/Mahler series as an example of how much of a revelation a series like this is (or how much it can be), I for one will not pose an ... • 9. The Symphony Orchestra At The Usf Concert Hall On the afternoon of November 23rd, there was a performance by the USF Symphony Orchestra at the USF Concert Hall. Their performance, which was masterful from beginning to end, featured guest artists Jay Hunsberger on the tuba and Dolly Roberts on the harp. The performance began with Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copland, a piece that started with a bang. The pang of a gong, and the beat of the drums, immediately captured and captivated the audience from the start. The slow build that led up to the trumpets and other brass instruments folding in, possessed an almost militaristic feel. Upon looking into the composer, it was no wonder why the triumphant sounds produced by the brass instruments came off as militaristic. Copland composed the piece during World War II. According to Elizabeth Bergman Crist, Copland: " . . . committed himself to creating music at once unabashedly modern he committed himself to creating music at once unabashedly modern and identifiably American. The 'desire to be American was symptomatic of the period,' he wrote in a later reminiscence. He recalled being 'anxious to write a work that would immediately be recognized as American in character' and so turned to jazz as 'an easy way to be American in musical terms.' Symphony No. 6 is also known as the Pastoral Symphony, this symphony includes five movements unlike the typical traditional four movement symphonies, as expected from Beethoven, the one who loved to break rules in the world of music. Besides composing music all day every day, Beethoven also loved to walk in country and enjoy the peacefulness of nature. The very first rough draft for Symphony No. 6 was composed while he was out in the rural area, which explains the origin of the ideas behind the symphony. The Allegro Ma Non Troppo movement is the first movement of Symphony No. 6, it describes the cheerful pleasant feeling that one should enjoy while staying in the countryside. Most of the melodies in this movement are considered as conjunct, with this feature in the movement, it really gives a smooth and gentle feeling to the audience. • 12. Beethoven's Heroic 3rd Symphony During the nineteenth century, the musical canon emerged as a list of works permanently established as being of the highest quality. While music was commonly only heard once or twice, canons were significant enough to be heard over and over again. In Lecture 5, Beethoven's "Heroic" 3rd Symphony was shown to be critiqued as being too heavy and long, unendurable, and not entertaining. In "Museum Pieces," J. Peter Burkholder indicates that the only works appropriate to be performed were museum pieces, or musical works with lasting value, because of their distinctive musical personality, familiarity, and preservation of works of revered dead composers (Burkholder). Historicists were composers who wrotemusic for museums, which concert halls became. He had a familiarity with established composers including Beethoven, Haydn, and J.S. Bach. Beethoven's legacy of masterworks intimidated Brahms–over 60 percent of orchestra performances comprised of Beethoven's works–and even asserted that he would "never compose a symphony" (Frisch 178). Critics were harsh on new symphonies, comparing them to Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn's masterworks, and it was not until his forties when he wrote his first symphony. Brahms' symphonies were influenced by specific past musical masterworks, including J.S. • 13. The Influences Of Mahler 's Work As A Conductor And Composer How does one codify the influences of Mahler's work as a conductor and composer? As Gustav Mahler is well known for his conducting, he is best known for his skills as a composer. "Mahler 's interpretative style enabled him, undistracted by the army of gossipers who in all walks of life gather round the success–seekers, to develop, to grow, to mature, to live his works and to create, as Schubert created his songs, Bruckner his symphonies and Masses, and Wagner his music dramas" (Grange). However, Leonard Bernstein sometimes felt (according to PBS ' American Masters video on Bernstein) like he had become Mahler in his performances. Gustav Mahler has become an iconic figure in the eyes of other conductors/composers, because it helped them become masters of their own works with the influential ideas of Mahler. Born on July 7, 1860, in Kalischt, Bohemia, Gustav Mahler was a late–Romantic composer and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer, Mahler acted as a bridge between the 19th–century Austro–German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. While in his lifetime his status as a conductor was established beyond question, his own music gained wide popularity only after periods of relative neglect which included a ban on its performance in much of Europe during the Nazi era. However, Mahler also was a Jew, and Jews in the region were associated by ethnic Czechs with Germans. Mahler's famous quote is: "I am thrice homeless, as a native of ... In this essay I will be discussing the extent that Dmitri Shostakovich adhered to and rebelled from the conventions and traditions that were normalized in classical music and I will offer varied examples of the many times Shostakovich has obeyed and dissented within music throughout his career. The career span of Shostakovich extends from 1926 when he presented his first major work, Symphony No.1 to 1970 when he presented Quartet No. 7. Born Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich on the 25th September, 1906, in St. Petersburg, Russia, the composer began his descent into classical music at the age of 9, before later moving on to study at the Petrograd conservatory. Throughout his life he compiled 15 symphonies, 15 string quartets and 36 film scores as well as many other compositions. Within his musical work and the course of his career Shostakovich managed to both adhere to traditions set within classical music as well as dissent from them, I will be exploring these. I would first like to address what traditions are associated with classical music to highlight how Shostakovich dissented from these. I will begin by briefly explaining the definition of chamber music, the definition of chamber music is "Instrumental music played by a small ensemble, with one player to a part, the most important form being the string quartet." Cultivated music can be defined in many different ways, although it is defines as being music that comes from another country, it is also defined as music that is consciously well put together. The word culture is almost visible. However, the term "cultivated" brings a deep contrast to that of "vernacular". Vernacular can be defined as music of the present place. It will be safe to say that cultivated music carries over into Vernacular music. Cultivated can also be described as imported music or brought over music. For example, Beethoven Symphony No 9, which sounds like the telling of a story of conquest, has been performed in many places around the world. Vernacular music can be thought of as music that has been created and raised within a country. Whether you listen to rap music or not, some critics say the sound changed and is not the same. For instance, taking into consideration culture and history; the music of 2Pac Shakur was said to be, too politically charged, while also discussing social issues that haunted the black community. The conductor for the performance was Jahja Ling, and Vadym Kholodenko performed on the piano (Bromberger, 2014, p. 13). Born approximately on December 16, 1770, in Bonn, located in the Electorate of Cologne, a principality of the Holy Roman Empire, Ludwig Van Beethovenwas a composer and pianist, and is arguably the greatest composer of all time. His first public recital was on March 26, 1778, at the age of 7, but unfortunately, though he played impressively, Beethoven received no press or recognition at the time (Biography.com). He attended the Latin grade school Tirocinium, but in 1781, at the age of 10, Beethoven withdrew from the school to study full–time under the Court Organist, Christian Gottlob Neefe. Under Neefe's instruction, Beethoven was introduced to Johann Sebastian Bach. At the age of 12, Beethoven published his first composition, piano variations based on a theme by composer and music theorist Gallus Dressler. Beethoven was later officially appointed as Assistant Court Organist, and in 1787, the court sent him to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna, Austria. During his audition, Mozart commented on the young Beethoven's performance, "Keep your eyes on him; some day he will give the world something to talk about." But his time under Mozart's tutelage was cut short when Beethoven returned only a few weeks later to Bonn after learning that his mother was desperately ill. Her death a few months later sent Beethoven into a fit of depression that would last for years (Biography.com). • 31. David Geffen Hall Concert Report On the 27th of April, I attended an open rehearsal for the New York Philharmonic at the David Geffen at Lincoln Center. Going to the David Geffen Hall for the first time, I came with high expectations on the size of the place. The venue wasn't as big as I thought it would be, but it was big enough for the standard orchestra size. The setting of the place as I entered was quiet and serene, with the spotlight on the orchestra and conductor Alan Gilbert. In order to fully enjoy the performance no phones or speaking were allowed when they performance went on. The audience followed this rule with conviction, and made it easier for a "new comer" like me to try to understand the pieces that were being played. One thing that impressed me with my fellow audience members was that fact that they were able to identify the pieces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I enjoyed this because it was easier to understand and made more sense. Compared to Apres by Franck Krawczyk which was came off as a collection of random sounds the Brahms's piece flowed together nicely and felt more uniformed. Symphony No.2 in D major, Op 73 by Johannes Brahms is an estimated 46 minute piece that is composed of four movements. The first movement is in Allegro non troppo, the second movement– Adagio non troppo, the third movement –Allegretto grazioso and the fourth movement– Allegro con spirito. The music period the symphony is from the Romantic era. Although my program didn't outright state what the piece was about, it did gave off a nature like vibe. The nature vibe I got from the piece is a prime aspect of Romantic music, which was all about nature and the supernatural. As mentioned in my program a key feature of Brahms Symphony No.2 in D major, Op 73 is its similarity to Beethoven's Symphony no.6 in F major, Op 68 (Pastoral Symphony). Both works give off a feeling of nature. However Beethoven's piece lets the audience know what it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1910 Europe organized the Clef Club, a society for African Americans in the music industry. In 1912 the club made history when it played a concert at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Colored Music Settlement School. The Clef Club Orchestra, while not a jazz band, was the first band to play proto–jazz at Carnegie Hall. It is difficult to overstate the importance of that event in the history of jazz in the United States – it was 12 years before the Paul Whiteman and George Gershwin concert at Aeolian Hall, and 26 years before Benny Goodman's famed concert at Carnegie Hall. • 33. Tchaikovsky Symphony 6 Essay General reaction: I was fascinated by the magnificence of David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center and elated by the magnitude and grandeur of the sound that the New York Philharmonic succeeded to produce. Composition I liked best: The piece that enchanted me most was Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74 "Pathetique" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a four–movement work composed of Adagio – Allegro non troppo in sonata form, Allegro con grazia in ternary form, Allegro molto vivace in sonata form, and Adagio lamentoso in ternary form with diverse tempos. The symphony was composed between February and the end of August 1893 and premiered close to the time of Tchaikovsky's death. Tchaikovsky dedicated that work to his nephew Bob Davydov. The subtitle Pathetique (infused with pathos, full of feelings) was suggested by the composer's brother shortly after the symphony's premiere. The last symphony by one of the greatest Russian composers Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky delved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For a reason the composer considered Symphony No. 6 the best work he had ever produced. It arose slowly from emptiness with the unexpected sound of divided double basses and a solo bassoon, enhanced by divided violas, followed by gloomy comments from the woodwinds, before swiftly changing into an edgy Allegronontroppo. Later it transformed into a blusterous section that recalled a Russian liturgical chant. The second movement accented the idiosyncrasy of the work, resembling a charming waltz while in fact it was not. The following scherzo grew rapidly into a march that smashed fiercely until the very conclusion. The finale of the symphony was characterized by an insistence on the minor mode and a closure perishing into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Beethoven's 9th Symphony Analysis This production of Beethoven's 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience's reactions to the ends of movements. The long–standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size and age, however, this audience's reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts. These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a relatively small and intimate concert hall. Because this concert was only a performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, I will react to movements two and four, the Scherzo and Recitative respectively. The Scherzo (second) movement was characterized by Beethoven's ability to keep the constant presto eighth–note motive throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Music is a Universal Language Starkville/MSU Symphony, Live At Lee Hall On Friday, November 6th, I had the pleasure to witness the Starkville/MSU Symphony performing a plethora of classical pieces all conveying the message that music is most certainly a universal language. The program was set in Lee Hall. The hall itself has two levels, one is the ground level and the other is the balcony level. The stage was lighted very nicely and helped each instrumentalist stand out uniquely. The stringed instruments were in the front and the brass section was in the back, along with the percussion. The symphony directors were standing in the front of the stage. There was also a special performance by the children's orchestra called the Sudduth Children's ... Its Allegro was very inspiring and had and effect like a thunder and lightning. It uses sonata allegro from in the first movement. Then, it establishes this lead composition to use its variations and convey different emotions. It then has moments where it is very slow and touching, just as beautiful as sounds of flowing water, calm and serene. However, other times we get a feeling of inspired courage and determination comparable to marching of soldiers. In my opinion, the ending form of the sonata allegro is the most splendid and satisfying, as it is both soft and emotional yet aggressive. It is a fine end to a great piece, and produces a great sense of gratification. In conclusion, after this experience, I have become a symphony enthusiast.
