This document summarizes a study that investigated the efficacy of crude cassava water extracts (CCWE) from three sources (bulk sample, MS6 variety, and TMS variety) as post-emergence herbicides for controlling weeds in cowpea crops. The study found that spraying 50% CCWE from bulk samples and the MS6 variety resulted in 40-50% phytotoxicity to weeds. These treatments and hand weeding significantly reduced weed biomass and density compared to the unweeded control, though hand weeding performed best. Crop growth and yield were also significantly influenced by the CCWE treatments, with the bulk sample and MS6 extracts resulting in yields comparable to hand weeding.

Conventional propagation practices of banana challenge the production of disease-free planting materials. This study evaluates the use of misting system and different plant growth enhancers, Benzyl Amino Purine at 2mg/l and Napthalene Acetic Acid at 0.93g/L, on plantlet development of Saba banana (Musa balbisiana) macropropagated under glasshouse conditions. A total of 36 corms are equally distributed in three propagators. Four growth parameters are observed and analysed using factorial in Completely Randomized Design in first generation plantlets (GP1) and second generation plantlets (GP2). Results show that the use of misting system significantly increased (p<0.01) all the growth parameters tested during the first and second cycles. The growth enhancers significantly shortened the number of days to emergence (p<0.01), (GP1, GP2) and increased the number of shoots emerged (p<0.01) (GP1, GP2), shoot collar diameter (p<0.01) (GP1) (p<0.05) (GP2), and total leaf area (p<0.05) (GP1) (p<0.01) (GP2). The interaction of the two factors has significantly shortened the number of days to emergence (P ≤ 0.05), produced the most number of shoots (P ≤ 0.01) and the largest total leaf area (P ≤ 0.05) in GP2. The findings suggest that the combined use of misting system and plant growth enhancers accelerates the growth of macropropagated Saba banana.

This study elucidated the pharmacological potential of sea urchins using methanol as extracting medium. The antibacterial potential was evaluated using the paper disc method and zone of inhibition against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was measured. Antioxidant properties of sea urchins were evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging assay. Three species of sea urchin randomly collected along the intertidal zone of Diguisit, Baler Aurora were identified using diagnostic keys by the National Museum of the Philippines and they were identified as follows; Echinothrix diadema, Echinometra mathaei, and Echinometra oblonga. E. diadema recorded the highest diameter zone of inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus after 24 hours of incubation with 11.03 ± 1.75mm and 13.52 ± 1.13mm respectively while E. mathaei only inhibited S. aureus with zone of inhibition of 9.27 ± 2.06mm in 24 hours of incubation as well. As the zone of inhibition prolongs, the zone of inhibition decreases as observed in 48 hours of incubation. E. oblonga did not show inhibitoy effect, however it recorded the highest radical scavenging activity with 64.46% among the three species of sea urchins. This was followed by E. mathaei (51.52%) and E. diadema (37.38%). All collected species manifested antioxidant potential. Based on the results, the collected species of sea urchins has a pharmacological potential.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), are associated with roots, found in the rhizosphere and can directly or indirectly enhance the plant growth. In this study soil was collected from rhizosphere of chickpea fields of different areas of Rawalpindi division of Pakistan. PGPR were isolated, screened and characterized. Eight isolates of rhizobacteria (RHA, RPG, RFJ, RC, RTR, RT and RK) were isolated from Rawalpindi division and were characterized. The antagonistic activity of these PGPR isolates against root infecting fungi (Fusarium oxysporum and Verticillium spp.,) was done and production of indole acetic acid (IAA), siderophore and P-solubilization was evaluated. The isolates RHA, RPG, RFJ, RC, RRD and RT were found to be positive in producing siderophore, IAA and P-solubilization. Furthermore, most of the isolates showed antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum, and Verticillium spp. The rhizobacterial isolates RHA, RPG, RFJ, RC, RRD, RTR, RT and RK were used as bio-inoculants that might be beneficial for chickpea cultivation as the rhizobacterial isolates possessed the plant growth promoting characters i.e. siderophore, IAA production, phosphate solubilization. In in vitro tests, Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus spp. inhibited the mycelial growth of the fungal root pathogens. The isolates (RHA and RPG) also significantly increased (60-70%) seed germination, shoot length, root length of the chickpea. The incidence of fungi was reduced by the colonization of RHA and RPG which enhanced the seedling vigor index and seed germination. The observations revealed that isolates RHA and RPG is quite effective to reduce the fungal root infection in greenhouse, and also increases seed yields significantly. These rhizobacterial isolates appear to be efficient yield increasing as well as effective biocontrol agent against fungal root pathogen.

Among free-living microorganisms, which can be practically used in agriculture, bacteria from the Azospirillum genus as well as other endophytes are nowadays thought of as the most active component of associative dinitrogen fixation. The investigation was carried out to study the characterization of Azospirillum lipoferu found in the soils of the ten agro-climatic zones which Karnataka, is classified. By using RAPD markers, 75 bands were scored out of which 78.6 % were found to be polymorphic. Statistical analysis of RAPD data enabled the classification of 10 Azospirillum isolates into two major groups. . In this, the cluster analysis based on 75 RAPD bands revealed that the ten A. lipoferu isolates examined clustered at a linkage distance of about 40 units on the dendrogram. There was no correlation between RAPD and geographical origin of isolates.

The Black gram and Maize is vegetative parameters such as seed germination, shoot and root length, leaf fresh weight, leafs dry weight, shoot and root dry weight had analyzed and biochemical studies of both Black gram and Maize was carried such as total chlorophyll content, leave soluble protein and in vivo nitrate reductase activity. Among microbial inoculants, the Rhizobium + PB mixer was found most effective in terms of seed germination, shoot and root length, leaf fresh weight, leafs dry weight, shoot and root dry weight and also showed increase total chlorophyll content, soluble protein and nitrate activities in both Black gram and Maize.

Moringa oleifera (MO) is a plant whose seeds possess strong coagulation properties capable of removing turbidity and heavy metals from water. In this study, the effectiveness of MO seeds as a potential pesticide removal apparatus for agricultural produce was investigated. The parameters of interest for each pesticide washing solution were pesticide-concentration reduction, cost, and taste alteration to the potatoes. Separate doses of 0.25 mL profenofos 500 EC were individually applied to distinct 250 g pesticide-free potato piles. A submersion of each tainted potato pile was carried out in one of the chosen pesticide baths (mineral water, 2% salt solution, 10% salt solution, vegetable bath wash, and 10 g MO seed) for 10 min, followed by a 10 second mineral water bath rinse. Remaining profenofos residue concentrations on potatoes were quantified using the quick, easy, cheap, rugged, and simple QuEChERs method coincided with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The experiments showed that the MO seed was the most effective at removing profenofos at 52.9% followed by the vegetable bath at 47.3%. Neither method caused an alteration in food taste, but the MO seed method is significantly cheaper at 2,000/L IDR ($0.14 USD) compared to the vegetable bath at IDR 10,668/L ($0.77 USD) at the time of the experiment, respectively.

An efficient plant regeneration protocol was developed for Santalum album L. Santalaceae , an economically important species. Plant regeneration was achieved using nodal explants and leaf disc on Murashige and Skoog MS medium for direct shoot regeneration. Effect of Plant Growth Regulators PGR like 6 Benzyl Adenine BA , Kinetin KN and 2 Isopentenyl adenine 2 iP on shoot initiation 2 Isopentenyl adenine and Gibberellic acid GA3 for shoot elongation and multiple shoot formation and Indole 3 Butyric Acid IBA and a Naphthalene Acetic Acid NAA for rooting was studied. Among the explants tested for shoot induction, nodal segments proved good results. The best treatment for obtaining shoot induction was 3.0mg L BAP and for rooting 1 mg L of IBA was found to be the best treatment combination for maximum sprouting of shoot and rooting. This study was carried out on the mycoflora associated with seeds of different citrus species. Citrus seed material was collected from districts of Punjab, i.e. Multan, Sargodha and Khanpur. Standard methods were applied for the isolation and identification of fungi. A total of 11 fungi including Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus flavus, Dreschslera tetramera, Alternaria alternata, Curvularia lunata, Macrophomina phaseolina, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium solani, Fusarium moniliforme, Rhizopus and Penicillium spp were isolated from the seeds of citrus. For control of isolated seed-born fungi, 3 recommended fungicides such as Ridomil Gold, Bavistin, Score and two chemical Salicylic acid and Boric acid, were used at 20, 30, 40 mg/10 mL and 5, 6, 7 μL/10 mL, respectively and chemical with 20, 30, 40 mg/10 mL. All these fungicide and chemicals significantly reuced with population of all fungi present in naturally infected seed samples. Ridomil Gold and Salicylic acid were found to be the best for the control of se d-born fungi of citrus seed at 40 mg/10 mL. The isolation and identification of different mycotoxins is essential to study health status of the citrus consumers and to safeguard the standards of WTO.
Potentials of Compost Tea of Certain Botanicals for Minimizing Root- Knot and...Premier Publishers
Two greenhouse experiments were conducted on eggplant to assess the impact of compost tea derived from plant residues namely rice hull (RHC), rice straw (RSC), tomato (TC), potato (PC), citrus (CC), and guava(GC) as well as city waste (CWC) compost on eggplant biomass and reproduction of Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis. Screened composts were introduced to plants as drenching application. Results indicated that percentage of increase in total plant fresh weight of eggplant infected with such nematodeswere more pronounced (P<0.05) with compost teas of RSW. Drenching the soil with RHC (Rf=0.7) and PC (Rf=0.9) were also effective in suppressing densities of M. incognita as well as number of galls, and eggs/ root. However, population densities and fecundity of R. reniformis were significantly reduced following the introduction of GC. Only, total phenol showed remarkable increment in plants treated with PC, GC and RSC compared to untreated inoculated plants.

The plant growth promoting rhizobacterias inoculants used in various formulations for different purpose. In addition to rhizobacterias, the formulation may also contain various additives. Furthermore, it is important to understand the interaction between bacteria and formulation materials. The formulation materials serve as cell protectants which enhance the shelf-life of bacteria. It is proved that the Rhizobium is the effective inoculants along with specific nutrient media for survival. Many researchers have shown that liquid rhizobial formulations are more beneficial than solid bio-fertilizer formulations. In the present work the survival of Azotobacter in liquid formulations were evaluated by using Glycerol at different concentration in Jenson’s broth. It was noted that survival of Azotobacter was concentration correlated. Lowest number of colonies in 5 mM in the medium containing glycerol (23 colonies at zero days and 5 colonies on 360th day) and highest number of colonies in 25 mM in the medium containing glycerol (38.66 colonies on zero day and 22 colonies on 360th day) (109 CFU/ml).
Callus Induction and Plantlet Regeneration in Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) M...IOSR Journals
An efficient protocol was devised for rapid callus induction and plantlet regeneration from the leaves of Orthosiphon aristatus. For callus induction, auxins such as 2, 4-D, IAA, NAA alone and in combination with cytokinin BAP were used. The most effective medium for callus induction and shoot regeneration was M S medium fortified with 8mg/l BAP and 2mg/l NAA, on which multiple shoots were obtained after 15 days of callus induction. All the in vitro raised shoots with length of 3-5 cm were transferred to rooting medium supplemented with different concentrations of IBA. The best rooting response was observed on half strength M S liquid medium supplemented with 3mg/l IBA. The established plantlets obtained were subjected to hardening and acclimatisation by transferring to polycups containing sterile soil for 3-4 weeks and then to the field, where

Low cotton yields in Zimbabwe are mainly caused by infestation by high numbers of insect pests, diseases, poor agronomic practices and poor season quality. Aphids cause considerable yield loss in cotton. Control methods implemented for aphids include cultural approaches, chemical and biological control and use of biopesticides. Synthetic pesticides used by farmers have problems of environmental contamination, toxicity to non-target organisms, resistance by pests and toxicity to humans among others. Plant extracts (PEs) are suitable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. Three aqueous PEs at 10 and 20%v/v application rates, distilled water (no spray) and acetamiprid were evaluated against aphids. The 3×2 factorial + 2 experiments were laid out in an RCBD in the field and CRD for laboratory experiments. Leaves of Aloe zebrina and Melia azedarach and Capsicum annum fruits were dried and ground into powder. Water extracts were prepared and used at 10 and 20%v/v and compared with synthetic insecticide and distilled water in the laboratory. In field evaluations distilled water was replaced by unsprayed plots. All three PEs had insecticidal properties against aphids. During laboratory experiments C. annum 20%v/v killed 64.75% aphids and C. annum 10%v/v killed 63.85% aphids and they were significantly (p=0.007) different from other treatments after correcting for mortality. An average of 80.3% and 72.2% aphids were controlled by C. annum 20%v/v and A. zebrina 20%v/v during field trial, these were significant (p<0.001). A. zebrina extracts had both repellence and contact toxicity against aphids. All the PEs are suitable alternatives to aphicides for aphid management.

Pseudomonas containing P.putida, P.fluorescens Chao, P.Flouresence Tabriz, P.flouresence B119 and Rhizobium
leguminosarumbv.phaseoli. In a factorial experiment with complete randomized blocks were used 5 levels of
helping bacteria(Pseudomonas spp.) and two rhizobium levels, four replicates were employed. Jamaran418
green bean was utilized as host plant. At the end, nodulation, growth and plant’s nitrogen indexes were
measured. The results showed that all above mentioned helping bacteria enhance the growth and nodulation
performance of green bean. It should be said that P.putida had the highest effect on the green bean
nodulation increase along with rhizobium (130%) followed by P.fluorescens Tabriz, P. fluorescens Chao and
P.fluorescens B119, ( 83, 63 and 17%, respectively). Also, we observed 45, 33, 22 and 8% performance
increase under the effect of P.putida, P. fluorescens Chao, P. fluorescens Tabriz and P. fluorescens B119,
respectively.
Characterisation of some Ribes L. accessions from Turkey based on SSRs patternsAgriculture Journal IJOEAR
Abstract— The variability of SSRs patterns were analysed for taxonomical delimitations including intra specific variations in 7 Ribes alpinum, 2 Ribes bieberstenii and 1 Ribes uva-crispa accessions from their natural populations. The total amplified produces of 10 SSRs primers were 172 between 50 and 330 bp (average of 17.2 bands per primer), of which 157 bands were polymorphic between Ribes accessions, corresponding to 91.2 % genetic diversity. The number of bands for each SSRs primer varied from 6 to 32. Segregations of Ribes accessions at specific and intraspecific levels were accomplished showing taxonomical and phylogeographical relations. Obtained results can be used as complementary data in characterizations of Ribes gene pool in Anatolia and selection of the germplasms suitable for crop improving.

Chitosan play an important role as an antifungal against Botrytis cinerea and the effect was a concentration dependent. The obtained results of in vitro experiment demonstrated that chitosan (4%) decreased radial growth of B. cinereato 2 %. Invivo the severity of infection reduced from 59.8 and 100.0 to 9.7, 33.8 and 40.1 in first, second and third week’s storage periods at 13C, respectively. Also, chitosan coating (4%) significantly caused an increase in fruit firmness whereas TSS was decreased with an increase by increasing in storage time. However,Vitamin C gave fluctuated results by increasing storage time. Gamma irradiation at 2.5 KGy reduced severity (%) of infected fruits from 55.5, 100 and 100 to 31.7, 45.9 and 49.9 and in healthy fruits severity (%) reduced from 48.9, 100 and 100 to 23.3, 25.1 and 29.1 in different storage periods 1, 2 and 3 weeks, respectively. Similarly, chitosan as well as gamma irradiation combination induced a significant increase of peroxidase enzyme (POD) activity. Induced changes in surface morphology and damage of cell structure caused by using chitosan shown by scanning electron microscopy. Also, gamma irradiation causes changes in hyphea structure and in surface morphology but combination of gamma irradiation with chitosan was more effective in altering fungus morphology and cell structure damage and no spore forming. This providing the efficiency of combination on reducing disease severity (%) of strawberry.

Bioactivity of Locally Available Plants on Cotton Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci an...IJEAB
Aqueous, diethyl ether, chloroform, petroleum ether, N-hexane and benzene extracts of locally available plant species were tested for phytochemical and insecticidal bioactivity against cotton whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, under controlled conditions. This study is within bioprospection context, for utilizing local plant species as alternative in sustainable agriculture development. The leaf and stem extract was used. The whole plant extract of T.procumbens followed by N.oleander and V.rosea showed repellent and toxic effect against adult and second nymphal instars. Leaf extract of all three plants showed high inhibition activity against nymphal instars. In case of flower extract less inhibition activity was shown respectively. Fungi which grow on the cotton plant was screened, characterized and checked for antifungal activity against the extracts of the plant material. Phytochemical analysis was also carried out by standard protocols.

The research reported here is part of a comprehensive investigation of Cikondangs ethnobotany. The objective of
this study was to determine the community knowledge in using plants for medicine and healing agent in Cikondang Indigenous Village, district Bandung. Emic and ethical approaches were used to describe the community knowledge along with the scientific explanations. The data of community knowledge in using plants for medicine and healing agent was collected from respondents as many as 87 families and 4 key informants through interview techniques. The medicinal plants were identified in Herbarium Bogoriense-LIPI Biology Research Centre. The Cikondang community uses as many as 68 species belong to 39 families for medicinal plants, and Zingiberaceae is the most widely family used. Eight plant parts ,that are used for the treatment, were root, tuber, rhizome, stem, bark, leaves, flowers, and fruit. Leaves are the most widely used plant parts for treatment (29 species). People use several methods to prepare herbs, by boiling, brewing, grinding, squeezing out, shredding, burning, and without proccessing. The most widely used method was boiling the materials (37 species). Based on the disease type, Cikondang community classified four groups of disease, i.e. external, internal, digestive, respiratory, reproductive and urogenital diseases. The external diseases used the most numerous herbs (25 species).

A Study on the Removal of Pesticide Residues on Potatoes Using Moringa oleife...AI Publications
Moringa oleifera (MO) is a plant whose seeds possess strong coagulation properties capable of removing turbidity and heavy metals from water. In this study, the effectiveness of MO seeds as a potential pesticide removal apparatus for agricultural produce was investigated. The parameters of interest for each pesticide washing solution were pesticide-concentration reduction, cost, and taste alteration to the potatoes. Separate doses of 0.25 mL profenofos 500 EC were individually applied to distinct 250 g pesticide-free potato piles. A submersion of each tainted potato pile was carried out in one of the chosen pesticide baths (mineral water, 2% salt solution, 10% salt solution, vegetable bath wash, and 10 g MO seed) for 10 min, followed by a 10 second mineral water bath rinse. Remaining profenofos residue concentrations on potatoes were quantified using the quick, easy, cheap, rugged, and simple QuEChERs method coincided with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The experiments showed that the MO seed was the most effective at removing profenofos at 52.9% followed by the vegetable bath at 47.3%. Neither method caused an alteration in food taste, but the MO seed method is significantly cheaper at 2,000/L IDR ($0.14 USD) compared to the vegetable bath at IDR 10,668/L ($0.77 USD) at the time of the experiment, respectively.

An efficient plant regeneration protocol was developed for Santalum album L. Santalaceae , an economically important species. Plant regeneration was achieved using nodal explants and leaf disc on Murashige and Skoog MS medium for direct shoot regeneration. Effect of Plant Growth Regulators PGR like 6 Benzyl Adenine BA , Kinetin KN and 2 Isopentenyl adenine 2 iP on shoot initiation 2 Isopentenyl adenine and Gibberellic acid GA3 for shoot elongation and multiple shoot formation and Indole 3 Butyric Acid IBA and a Naphthalene Acetic Acid NAA for rooting was studied. Among the explants tested for shoot induction, nodal segments proved good results. The best treatment for obtaining shoot induction was 3.0mg L BAP and for rooting 1 mg L of IBA was found to be the best treatment combination for maximum sprouting of shoot and rooting. This study was carried out on the mycoflora associated with seeds of different citrus species. Citrus seed material was collected from districts of Punjab, i.e. Multan, Sargodha and Khanpur. Standard methods were applied for the isolation and identification of fungi. A total of 11 fungi including Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus flavus, Dreschslera tetramera, Alternaria alternata, Curvularia lunata, Macrophomina phaseolina, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium solani, Fusarium moniliforme, Rhizopus and Penicillium spp were isolated from the seeds of citrus. For control of isolated seed-born fungi, 3 recommended fungicides such as Ridomil Gold, Bavistin, Score and two chemical Salicylic acid and Boric acid, were used at 20, 30, 40 mg/10 mL and 5, 6, 7 μL/10 mL, respectively and chemical with 20, 30, 40 mg/10 mL. All these fungicide and chemicals significantly reuced with population of all fungi present in naturally infected seed samples. Ridomil Gold and Salicylic acid were found to be the best for the control of se d-born fungi of citrus seed at 40 mg/10 mL. The isolation and identification of different mycotoxins is essential to study health status of the citrus consumers and to safeguard the standards of WTO.
Potentials of Compost Tea of Certain Botanicals for Minimizing Root- Knot and...Premier Publishers
Two greenhouse experiments were conducted on eggplant to assess the impact of compost tea derived from plant residues namely rice hull (RHC), rice straw (RSC), tomato (TC), potato (PC), citrus (CC), and guava(GC) as well as city waste (CWC) compost on eggplant biomass and reproduction of Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis. Screened composts were introduced to plants as drenching application. Results indicated that percentage of increase in total plant fresh weight of eggplant infected with such nematodeswere more pronounced (P<0.05) with compost teas of RSW. Drenching the soil with RHC (Rf=0.7) and PC (Rf=0.9) were also effective in suppressing densities of M. incognita as well as number of galls, and eggs/ root. However, population densities and fecundity of R. reniformis were significantly reduced following the introduction of GC. Only, total phenol showed remarkable increment in plants treated with PC, GC and RSC compared to untreated inoculated plants.

Furthermore, it is important to understand the interaction between bacteria and formulation materials. The formulation materials serve as cell protectants which enhance the shelf-life of bacteria. It is proved that the Rhizobium is the effective inoculants along with specific nutrient media for survival. Many researchers have shown that liquid rhizobial formulations are more beneficial than solid bio-fertilizer formulations. In the present work the survival of Azotobacter in liquid formulations were evaluated by using Glycerol at different concentration in Jenson’s broth. It was noted that survival of Azotobacter was concentration correlated. Lowest number of colonies in 5 mM in the medium containing glycerol (23 colonies at zero days and 5 colonies on 360th day) and highest number of colonies in 25 mM in the medium containing glycerol (38.66 colonies on zero day and 22 colonies on 360th day) (109 CFU/ml).
Callus Induction and Plantlet Regeneration in Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) M...IOSR Journals
An efficient protocol was devised for rapid callus induction and plantlet regeneration from the leaves of Orthosiphon aristatus. For callus induction, auxins such as 2, 4-D, IAA, NAA alone and in combination with cytokinin BAP were used. The most effective medium for callus induction and shoot regeneration was M S medium fortified with 8mg/l BAP and 2mg/l NAA, on which multiple shoots were obtained after 15 days of callus induction. All the in vitro raised shoots with length of 3-5 cm were transferred to rooting medium supplemented with different concentrations of IBA. The best rooting response was observed on half strength M S liquid medium supplemented with 3mg/l IBA. The established plantlets obtained were subjected to hardening and acclimatisation by transferring to polycups containing sterile soil for 3-4 weeks and then to the field, where

Low cotton yields in Zimbabwe are mainly caused by infestation by high numbers of insect pests, diseases, poor agronomic practices and poor season quality. Aphids cause considerable yield loss in cotton. Control methods implemented for aphids include cultural approaches, chemical and biological control and use of biopesticides. Synthetic pesticides used by farmers have problems of environmental contamination, toxicity to non-target organisms, resistance by pests and toxicity to humans among others. Plant extracts (PEs) are suitable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. Three aqueous PEs at 10 and 20%v/v application rates, distilled water (no spray) and acetamiprid were evaluated against aphids. The 3×2 factorial + 2 experiments were laid out in an RCBD in the field and CRD for laboratory experiments. Leaves of Aloe zebrina and Melia azedarach and Capsicum annum fruits were dried and ground into powder. Water extracts were prepared and used at 10 and 20%v/v and compared with synthetic insecticide and distilled water in the laboratory. In field evaluations distilled water was replaced by unsprayed plots. All three PEs had insecticidal properties against aphids. During laboratory experiments C. annum 20%v/v killed 64.75% aphids and C. annum 10%v/v killed 63.85% aphids and they were significantly (p=0.007) different from other treatments after correcting for mortality. An average of 80.3% and 72.2% aphids were controlled by C. annum 20%v/v and A. zebrina 20%v/v during field trial, these were significant (p<0.001). A. zebrina extracts had both repellence and contact toxicity against aphids. All the PEs are suitable alternatives to aphicides for aphid management.

bacteria to nitrogen fixation and nodulation. In this paper, we used four isolated from two species of
Pseudomonas containing P.putida, P.fluorescens Chao, P.Flouresence Tabriz, P.flouresence B119 and Rhizobium
leguminosarumbv.phaseoli. In a factorial experiment with complete randomized blocks were used 5 levels of
helping bacteria(Pseudomonas spp.) and two rhizobium levels, four replicates were employed. Jamaran418
green bean was utilized as host plant. At the end, nodulation, growth and plant’s nitrogen indexes were
measured. The results showed that all above mentioned helping bacteria enhance the growth and nodulation
performance of green bean. It should be said that P.putida had the highest effect on the green bean
nodulation increase along with rhizobium (130%) followed by P.fluorescens Tabriz, P. fluorescens Chao and
P.fluorescens B119, ( 83, 63 and 17%, respectively). Also, we observed 45, 33, 22 and 8% performance
increase under the effect of P.putida, P. fluorescens Chao, P. fluorescens Tabriz and P. fluorescens B119,
respectively.
Characterisation of some Ribes L. accessions from Turkey based on SSRs patternsAgriculture Journal IJOEAR
Abstract— The variability of SSRs patterns were analysed for taxonomical delimitations including intra specific variations in 7 Ribes alpinum, 2 Ribes bieberstenii and 1 Ribes uva-crispa accessions from their natural populations. The total amplified produces of 10 SSRs primers were 172 between 50 and 330 bp (average of 17.2 bands per primer), of which 157 bands were polymorphic between Ribes accessions, corresponding to 91.2 % genetic diversity. The number of bands for each SSRs primer varied from 6 to 32. Segregations of Ribes accessions at specific and intraspecific levels were accomplished showing taxonomical and phylogeographical relations. Obtained results can be used as complementary data in characterizations of Ribes gene pool in Anatolia and selection of the germplasms suitable for crop improving.

Chitosan play an important role as an antifungal against Botrytis cinerea and the effect was a concentration dependent. The obtained results of in vitro experiment demonstrated that chitosan (4%) decreased radial growth of B. cinereato 2 %. Invivo the severity of infection reduced from 59.8 and 100.0 to 9.7, 33.8 and 40.1 in first, second and third week’s storage periods at 13C, respectively. Also, chitosan coating (4%) significantly caused an increase in fruit firmness whereas TSS was decreased with an increase by increasing in storage time. However,Vitamin C gave fluctuated results by increasing storage time. Gamma irradiation at 2.5 KGy reduced severity (%) of infected fruits from 55.5, 100 and 100 to 31.7, 45.9 and 49.9 and in healthy fruits severity (%) reduced from 48.9, 100 and 100 to 23.3, 25.1 and 29.1 in different storage periods 1, 2 and 3 weeks, respectively. Similarly, chitosan as well as gamma irradiation combination induced a significant increase of peroxidase enzyme (POD) activity. Induced changes in surface morphology and damage of cell structure caused by using chitosan shown by scanning electron microscopy. Also, gamma irradiation causes changes in hyphea structure and in surface morphology but combination of gamma irradiation with chitosan was more effective in altering fungus morphology and cell structure damage and no spore forming. This providing the efficiency of combination on reducing disease severity (%) of strawberry.
ABSTRACT- Phylloplane fungi presented on the leaf surface were screened and selected for the assessment of their
potential against Alternaria alternata causing leaf spot disease of Rauwolfia serpentina (Sarapgandha). Among the
antagonists Trichoderma harzianum ISO-2 showed minimum conidial germination. Effect of foliar spray of phylloplane
fungi on the lesion development was also studied. In mist chamber studies seven treatments comprising application of
antagonists in the presence of pathogen proved effective in causing per cent disease reduction by 30-50 % in comparison
with the control. In the field trials Penicillium sublateritium showed the maximum fresh and dry root weight. P. sublateritium
also showed significant percentage disease reduction in comparison to control.

The present study investigates the growth and developmental changes of Pearlmillet [(Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.)] and Ragi [Eleusine coracana (Gaertn )] under pot culture experiments with different concentrations of aqueous leaf extracts (5, 10, 20, 30 and 50g/l) of Teak. Teak leaf extracts showed an inhibitory and stimulatory effects on germination, seedling length, biomass, pigments and biochemical constituents of pearl millet and ragi. The 5g/l concentration of extract stimulated the seed germination, seedling growth and biochemical constituents of pearl millet and ragi.. The higher concentrations (10, 20, 30and 50g/l) showed an inhibitory effects in all the parameters studied in the two economically important cereals. The degree of retardation was dependent on the concentration of the Teak leaf extracts. Root length, Shoot length, Biomass and Biochemical constituents of ragi seedlings were highly reduced at 50g/l concentrations of aqueous leaf
extracts of Teak. Between pearl millet and ragi seedlings, more allelopathic influence was observed in ragi than pearl millet seedlings.

Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were carried out at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, University of Gezira, Sudan in season 2014/15 to study the allelopathic effects of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh) leaf on seed germination and seedling growth of some poaceous crops. Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the allelopathic effects of leaf aqueous extract of Eucalyptus on seed germination of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench), millet (Pennisetum glaucum [L.] R. Br.), maize (Zea mays L.) and wheat (Triticum vulgare L.). Six concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) of the leaf aqueous extract of Eucalyptus were prepared from the stock solution (50 g / l). Treatments, for each crop, were arranged in completely randomized design with four replicates. The seeds were examined for germination at three days after initial germination. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to study the allelopathic effects of Eucalyptus leaf powder on seedling growth of the same crops. The leaf powder of Eucalyptus was incorporated into the soil at rate of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% on w/w bases in pots. Treatments, for each crop, were arranged in completely randomized design with four replicates. The experiments were terminated at 30 days after sowing and the plant height, number of leaves and root length of crop seedlings were measured as well as plant fresh and dry weight. Data were subjected to analysis of variance procedure. Means were separated for significance using Duncan`s Multiple Range Test at p 0.5. The results showed that the leaf aqueous extract of Eucalyptus significantly reduced seed germination of the tested poaceous crops and there was direct negative relationship between concentration and germination. Also, the results showed that incorporating leaf powder of Eucalyptus into the soil significantly decreased plant height, number of leaves and root length of crop seedlings as well as seedling fresh and dry weight. In addition, the reduction in seedling growth was increased as the leaf powder increased in the soil. Based on results supported by different studies, it was concluded that Eucalyptus has allelopathic effects on seed germination and seedling growth of the poaceous crops.
The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm and laboratory of Institute of
Sustainable Agrotechnology, University Malaysia Perlis, Padang Besar, Perlis, Malaysia, with the objective
toinvestigate the inhibitory and stimulatory effects of aqueous extract of mungbean on seed germination and
seedling growth of three crop species, mungbean, sweet corn and okra. Different treatments of mungbean
aqueousextracts (vegetative fresh, vegetative after 2 weeks drying, vegetative after 4 weeks drying, flowering
fresh, flowering after 2 weeks drying, flowering after 4 weeks drying, flowering fresh, flowering after 2 weeks
drying, flowering after 4 weeks drying, maturity fresh, maturity after 2 weeks drying, maturity after 4 weeks
drying and water as control) were used to test their effect on the test species. The experiment was randomly
distributed and according to Completely Randomized Design(CRD) with five replicates. The results showed the
fresh vegetative aqueous extract of mungbean had a significant effect (stimulatory) on germination percent and
growth parameters such as number of root, root length and shoot height, of the three crop species. The study
revealed that the aqueous extract of mungbean have different effects (inhibitory and stimulatory) on the
seedlings and the mode of action depends on the associated plant species.Our results suggest that the aqueous
extract of mungbean from the different growth stages and drying periods have an allelopathic effect.
Effects of Vegetative Zones on the Nutritional Composition of Vernonia Amygda...AI Publications
The study was carried out to determine the effects of vegetative zones (location) on the nutritional compositions of Vernonia amygdalina leaves in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Across locations (in each vegetative zones), A total land area of 9 m x 18 m was acquired and soil samples were randomly collected to determine the physical and chemical composition of the soils. The growth of Vernonia amygdalina (stem) with a spacing of 1 m x 1 m between rows was determined. Harvested fresh leaves of the plant were analyzed for nutritional composition using standard methods. Nutritional and mineral compositions were observed at different proportions in the leaves of the investigated plant. Higher proximate composition in the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina was also recorded in terms of Moisture (Efon; 11.34%) and protein (Ikere; 22.46 %,) in the rainforest. However, higher Fat (Otun; 4.58 %), Crude fiber (Omuo; 16.08 %), Ash (Omuo; 14.69%) and Carbohydrate (Otun; 38.68 %) was found in Vernonia amygdalina grown in the Derived Savannah area. Similarly, the Mineral element compositions in the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina were found to be higher in plant from the rainforest area than the derived savannah area of Ekiti State except sodium and iron, which were higher in Vernonia amygdalina grown in the Derived Savannah area. However, the significant differences recorded between the nutritional components on the studied medicinal plant reveals the potentiality of the influence of soil factor and different climatic conditions of the study areas.

Abstract: In vitro mutation induction by using gamma ray at 20, 30, 40 and 60Gy was used to generate variability in triploid banana "Berangan cv. Intan (AAA), so as to provide the opportunity to select plants with desirable characters such as early fruiting and short stature. Mutation frequency increased with increased dosage whereas, survival and capacity to regenerate decreased with increased doses. Time to initiation varied from 4-8 weeks for gamma-irradiated materials compared to 2-3 weeks in the control. It appeared that the higher the dose, the longer it took for shoot initiation. The exposure of shoot-tip meristem pieces to radiation doses produced wide variation in growth and morphogenetic performance. Mutagenic treatments induced 2 to 3- fold increases in variability in both quantitative and qualitative traits at different stages, in vitro; at nursery and field. For the field-grown plants; the proportion varied from 2.9% for the control plants to 16.8% for 60 Gy and 20.1% for 40 Gy-treatments, while for treatments at 20 and 30 Gy variations was at 18% and 19.2%, respectively. The frequency of variants was highest in 40 Gy followed by 30 Gy and 20 Gy, while it was very low in 60 Gy except for plant stature (dwarfism or stunted growth). Earliness to flowering variants were recorded at 20, 30 and 40 Gy at low frequencies (0.6%, 0.7% and 1.7%) respectively, while none was observed for 60 Gy treatments. As in vitro mutation induction could create genetic variability as well as many undesirable variants, it is highly desirable to integrate in vitro mutation with a selection system that can screen for large mutagen treated population. The useful variants recorded for earliness to flowering were selected for 30 and 40 Gy treatments. 40 Gy showed high frequency in earliness as compared with 20 and 30 Gy., which came to flowering as early as 6 – 6.5 months compared to 7-8 months for control. The useful dwarf, which considered as desirable traits, showed a balance of height and girth.

SYNERGISTIC ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF PHYTOESTROGENS IN CRUDE EXTRACTS OF T...lukeman Joseph Ade shittu
Intensive studies on extracts and biologically active compounds isolated from medicinal plants have doubled in the last decade worldwide. However, as a result of paucity of knowledge and folkloric claim on the effectiveness of sesame leaves in infectious disease treatments, we aimed to determine the synergistic antimicrobial activity of essential oils and lignans present in the crude leaves extracts of Sesame radiatum and Sesame indicum. Ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of both leaves were studied for their in-vitro synergistic antimicrobial activity against both Gram positive and Gram negative micro-organisms, and Yeast using Agar diffusion method. The GC-MS phytochemical screening of methanolic extract showed that the major compounds in essential oils are of carboxylic acids and phenolic groups especially, the most potent antioxidants known to man like sesamol, sesamolin and sesamin among others. Methanolic and ethanolic extracts have broad spectrum antimicrobial effect against all the tested pathogenic micro-organisms except Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus respectively, while the aqueous extract exhibited inhibitory activity on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Candida albicans. The result confirmed the folkloric claims of the antimicrobial effectiveness of locally consumed sesame leaves extracts especially against bacterial and common skin infection in many areas of Nigeria .
This survey was conducted on an experimental parcel of the Agronomic High School of the National Polytechnic Institute Félix HOUPHOUET- BOIGNY (ESA-INPHB) of Yamoussoukro (Côte d’Ivoire). It aims to evaluate the insecticidal effect of 2 local plants aqueous extracts on termites (Azadirachta indica and Cassia siamea) dosed at 131.25 g powder/ L compared to a chemical pesticide (Chlorpyrifos ethyl) dosed at 480 g / L. A total of 11 termite species were collected from the plots. The fungus-growers with 6 species are the most dominant group. Four soil-feeder species and one wood-boring species were also collected. Only fungus-growers are present in the areas treated with plant extracts and chlorpyrifos ethyl. It was observed a high abundance of termites in heading stage of the rice growth. In maturity stage, ie 4 months after sowing the efficiency of chlorpyrifos ethyl decreased as plant aqueous extracts remain effective. Among the two tested plants, Azadirachta indica seems to be the most effective compared to Cassia siamea against termites. Chlorpyrifos ethyl could be used as a cure for its swift action on termites while Azadirachta indica could be used preventively and for crops whose destructive action is long term.

Abstract— Its seems likely that agricultural management as diverse as certified organic and conventional IPM practices would impact the microbiota associated with crop surfaces differently. We sampled organic and conventionally managed apples at multiple time-points in a growing season and characterized the bacterial taxa associated with replicates of each treatment type. Surprisingly, no evidence of significant differences persisting across multiple time-points was observed. Significant differential abundance of certain taxa was documented but when it was, it was primarily associated with a single time-point making it difficult to understand if these observations resulted from an environmental or a treatment effect. Principal component analyses demonstrated that sampling time-point explained more of the differences between bacterial communities than treatment. Description of dominant shared bacterial families for both organic and conventional samples included Oxalobacteraceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Sphingomonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae.

The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) phytochemical screening showed the presence of essential oils mainly the phenolic and carboxylic acids groups. The ethanolic extract mildly inhibited the growth of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Candida albicans, while there was no inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aurogenosa and Escherichia coli. Investigating the bacterial inactivation potential of purified okra (Hibiscus...AZOJETE UNIMAID
The ability of purified okra protein (POP) as coagulant and as disinfectant material in comparison with aluminium sulphate (AS) in water treatment was assessed. A laboratory jar test experiments and Colilert-18/Quanti-Tray method of bacterial analysis were conducted using POP as coagulant in treating river water. The results show an excellent dual performance function of POP against the conventional coagulant, AS in drinking water treatment. It was observed that a marked inactivation of approximately 100% of faecal and E-coli count in raw water was achieved with POP and zero regrowth of bacteria after 72-hour post treatment. However, there was regrowth in total coliform count as a result of the presence of other microbes other than E-coli and faecal coliform in the system. In all cases AS showed a reduced performance against the two indicator organisms achieving only 93% with remarkable regrowth of E-coli and faecal coliform after prolonged storage time in the clarified water. Turbidity removal was also noted to be approximately similar, 92% across all coagulants tested. Therefore, the use of POP in water treatment could improve access to clean water in developing countries and could help in reducing the import of water treatment chemicals.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted at Owode- Ijako in Ogun State, Nigeria between September 2006 and
April 2007 to investigate the efficacy of three sources of Crude Cassava Water Extract (CCWE) as post
emergence herbicide on weeds of cowpea. The trials were arranged in randomized complete block design and
replicated three times. The treatments were 25% and 50% of Bulk sample, MS6 and TMS extracts respectively,
and two controls; unweeded and handweeded in each trial. Herbicidal efficacies of CCWE in controlling cowpea
weeds were evaluated using phytotoxicity, weed biomass and density. The results showed that spraying CCWE
of Bulk and MS6 at 50% on cowpea weed caused 40 and 50% phytotoxicity respectively. There was no
significant difference in weed biomass (65.3% and 74.5%) and weed density (79.92 and 80.33) of CCWE of bulk
sample and MS6 respectively. Whereas handweeded achieved 98.68% and 96.65% weed biomass and density
respectively. The growth attributes such as plant height, number of leaves and leaf area differed significantly due
to different treatments. Grain yield and yield components of cowpea were significantly influenced by the
application of CCWE from the three sources. Highest grain yield (540kg/ha) was recorded in handweeded plots
but was comparable to plots sprayed with 50% CCWE of bulk samples (450kg/ha) and MS6 (430kg/ha) while
least grain yield was recorded in unweeded plots.

Introduction
Cowpea is an important crop for farmers in the West African region, particularly in the dry savannas. It is a short
duration crop and therefore highly susceptible to early weed interference of weeds such as Eleusine indica,
Talinum fruticosurps (Jacq.) Wild, Euphorbia heterophylla, Cynodon dactylon, Commelina spp, Aspilia Africana,
Imperita cylindrical Chromoleana odorata, Rottboellia cochichinensis, Calopogonium mucunoides (Akobundu,
1987, Lagoke et al., 1994, and Dugje et al., 2009). Others are Portulaca oleracea, Schwenkia americana,
Phyllantus amarus and Spigelia anthemia (Fayinminnu 2010).
The first 3 – 4 weeks of cowpea early growth are critical for weed competition. (Dugje et al., 2009).
The crop competes with weeds effectively for essential environmental resources, especially nutrients, moisture
or water, light and space (Ayeni et al., 1984). Remison (1978) showed that yield components of cowpea were
reduced as density of the weed increased. However, several approaches exist for weed control include use of
chemicals, cultural (hand weeding), mechanical and biological, land management, use of resistant crop varieties,
crop rotation, (Dugje et al., 2009) following use of botanicals and allelochemicals.
Crude cassava water extract (CCWE) from processed cassava varieties had been reported by
Fayinminnu (1999) to possess phytotoxic activity on weed flora/ vegetation. This is possibly due to the presence
of hydrocyanic acid (HCN) in the extract as confirmed by the research work of Fayinminnu (2010). It is however
not clear if crude cassava water extracts would be able to suppress/control growth of weeds associated with
cowpea. This study therefore was carried out to investigate the effect of crude cassava water extracts in the
management of cowpea weeds as a post emergence herbicide.
2. Materials and Methods
2.1. Field experiment
The study was carried out at Ijako – Owode on latitudes 60 351N - 60 451N and longitudes 20 551E - 30151E. It is
located in Ado - Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, a tropical rain forest zone of south west,
Nigeria. The experiment was conducted between September 2006 and April 2007. The cowpea seeds were
grown at spacing of 30x60cm for 12weeks in each year. The area of land used for the experiment was 540m2,
which was prepared manually. Each experimental plot measured 3m x 3m with 1m and 2m alleys between plots
and replicates respectively. Experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and
replicated three times with eight treatments. The treatments comprised of Bulk, MS6 and TMS at 25 and 50%, of
CCWE respectively, a hand weeded and unweeded. Three cowpea seeds of Ife brown variety were sown per hole

but later thinned to one seedling per stand at 2 weeks after sowing (WAS). Insect pests were controlled using
Cypermethrin at 1 L/ha beginning from 2 WAS and sprayed at 10 days interval. Crude cassava water extract was
applied on the cowpea weeds weekly from 3 - 7 WAS according to Fayinminnu (1999; 2010) using knapsack
sprayer CP 15 while hand weeding was done at 3 and 5 WAP.
2.2. Laboratory experiment
Physical and chemical of soil were analysed according to the method of IITA (1982). Crude cassava
water extract used for this study was obtained from freshly prepared extracts of two cassava varieties (MS6 and
TMS 30555) while Bulk CCWE was obtained from cassava processing sites in Ijako –Owode near the
experimental study area. Extraction of crude cassava water extract was prepared by grate-press method and the
chemical composition as described by Fayinminnu (2010). Matured fresh cassava tubers were washed peeled and
blended into pulp (mashed) within 24 hours in order to prevent denaturing of cassava tubers. The mashed pulp
was put in a sterilized muslin sack and placed under a presser, with a bowl placed underneath to collect the water
extract from the cassava pulp intermittently for 5 hours. The water extract from the bowl was poured into a
calibrated black plastic keg and was tightly closed to prevent volatilization of hydrocyanic acid in the cassava
water extract. Sample of serial dilutions of the crude water extract was taken to the Analytical laboratory of
Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) Moor Plantation Apata, Ibadan, Nigeria to determine
the elemental constituents.
2.3. Data collection
Data collection commenced at three weeks after planting (3WAS) until 12WAS. These sampling
periods covered the active vegetative development in cowpea. Growth parameters taken were plant height (cm),
number of leaves produced and leaf area (cm2) at 8WAS.Yield components taken were numbers of pods, pod
weight (g), seeds per pod and grain yield (kg/ha) which were obtained from the matured pods from the net plots
harvested at 12 WAS. Phytotoxicity on weeds was carried out as visual toxicity rating which was determined
using a scale of 0 -10, where `0` indicates no toxicity on weeds and `10` indicates excellent toxicity at 4, 6 and 8
WAS according to criteria developed by Clay and Davison (1978).
Weed control parameters were carried out in a 1.0m2 quadrant placed randomly two times at 5m
intervals along transects. Samples of weeds within the quadrant were collected, identified and classified based on
floral morphology (broad and narrow) prior to crude cassava water extract treatments. The fresh and dry matter
production of the weeds was determined at 3, 6, 9 and 12 WAS. The weeds were uprooted and washed
thoroughly with clean water. The weeds were dried under natural conditions in the open air for 2 hours. The
fresh weight (g/m2) was taken and the weeds were packed in paper envelope and oven dried at 700C until they
have attained constant weight. Weed density was also determined at 3, 6, 9 and 12 WAS by counting the number
of weeds (no/m2) in 1.0m2 quadrant.
2.4. Statistical analysis
The data collected were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Test of significance of the
means was by the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT), P<0.05 was the criterion for significance.
3.
Results
The weeds associated with cowpea production in 2006 and 2007 experiments were shown in Table
1.The weed species in this study were ephemerals which showed that broad leafed constituted about 70% while
grasses was 30%. About two different weed species were observed in 2007. This may be due to the seed
hibernation of these species from CCWE which later resurged in 2007, this also suggests that CCWE may not be
effective as pre emergence herbicide. Phytotoxicity on weeds revealed significant differences (p<0.05) between
all crude cassava water extract (CCWE) of Bulk, MS and TMS in 2006 and 2007 as shown in Table 2. The
phytotoxicity showed the same trend in both experiments, with crude cassava water extract of Bulk and MS at
50% recording the highest toxicity over TMS treatments. This may be due to the presence of high hydrocyanic
acid content in both CCWE which showed herbicidal properties as reported by Rice (1984), Putnam (1989) &
Fayinminnu (2010). This might probably have affected the biological and cellular systems of the weed species as
reported by Keilin (1966) and resulted to decolorisation (yellowing) and wilting (Fayinminnu 2010).
Weed biomass of broad leafed and grasses and weed density across the crude cassava water extract of
Bulk, MS and TMS treatments in 2006 and 2007 showed significant differences (p<0.05) in Table 2. The effect
of CCWE of Bulk, MS and TMS at 25 and 50% on weed biomass of broadleaf and weed density in 2007 was
reduced when compared with 2006. This is probably because there was no increase in the dose (amount) of
CCWE applied on the weed species which had also increased in numbers. However, reduction of weed biomass

and density was achieved through CCWE by suppressing the weed species when compared with the unweeded
treatment. The weed suppression enhanced the vegetative growth and reduction in yield loss in accordance to
Tijani- Eniola (2001). Hand weeded treatment recorded lowest weed biomass and density over other treatments
in the study (Table 2).
Growth parameters under the crude cassava water extract of Bulk, MS and TMS as post emergent herbicide
were shown in (Table 3). Cowpea plant height and number of leaves produced followed the same trend whereby
Bulk, MS and TMS at 25 and 50% concentrations were statistically different (p<0.05). Cowpea plant height in
plots sprayed with TMS at 25 and 50% compared favourably with hand weeded in 2006 while MS at 50%
compared favourably with hand weeded in 2007. Number of leaves recorded from Bulk and MS at 50%
compared favourably with hand weeded in both years. Crude cassava water extract of Bulk, MS and TMS
showed high leaf area. It also shown that the CCWE could reduce weed biomass at each growth stages of
cowpea plants (3-7 WAS), as an early post emergent herbicide. This results obtained implies that growth
resources such as nutrients, water and light would be less competed for between the weeds and cowpea plants.
The yield components of cowpea were significantly (p<0.05) affected by different crude cassava water extract as
post emergent herbicide (Table 4). Crude cassava water extract of Bulk and MS at 50% compared favourably
with hand weeded in cowpea number of pods in 2006. The least number of pods seeds/pod and grain yield were
obtained from unweeded while hand weeded recorded the highest in 2006 and 2007. This is probably due to
weed free situation in the hand weeded plots. Crude cassava water extracts from Bulk and MS at 25 and 50% in
the experiments recorded higher yield parameters than all TMS treatments.
4. Discussion
Similar findings had been reported by West Gate et al., (1997) and Johnson et al., (1998). This suggests that the
critical period at which cowpea plants could not tolerate weed competition falls within this range. The result
from this research may be due to high potency of hydrocyanic acid in Bulk and MS crude cassava water extract
which reduced weed biomass and density with herbicidal potentials and acted as early post emergent herbicides
which brought about higher grain yield values as also reported by Olofintoye & Adesiyun (1989) and Dugje et
al., (2009). This could also be attributed to adequate canopy formation, which made it easy for cowpea crop to
intercept solar radiation better than the weeds, hence making the weed interference less effective on the yield
components. Similar findings as reported by Oworu (1988) & O`Donovan et al., (1997). Drastically reduction in
seed weight was recorded from unweeded treatment while hand weeded recorded the highest seed weight in the
study.
4.
Conclusion
The study concluded that Bulk and MS crude cassava water extract at 50% was able to effectively perform
as post emergence herbicide with TMS during the critical early growth stage of cowpea (3-7WAP) against
weeds. This study also showed that CCWE could be used as an alternative to synthetic herbicides because it is
readily available and likely to easily biodegrade. This would be beneficial to the resources of poor small farm
holders in developing economies of the world. Furthermore, CCWE may be proved suitable and be used as
product of choice for organic food production.
