Workshop/Dialogue facilitated for the MunaTo People of the Province of Saranggani. Organized by the Maharlika Artists and Writers Federation and the Provincial Government of Saranggani
This document discusses the decline of intellectualism over generations and proposes potential causes and solutions. It suggests that intellectualism is lacking due to a lack of reading culture, shallow innovation focused only on quick results, a lack of cultural and historical identity, narrow thinking, and a poor work ethic. However, Asia is held up as an exception for maintaining cultural identity and a strong work ethic. The document proposes promoting an "Asian world" model, encouraging innovation, evaluation, and replication of diverse Asian systems. Individuals, governments, and industries all have roles to play in investing in knowledge, rewarding hard work and innovation.
The document discusses the lack of diversity in the technology industry in Australia and proposes the Tech Girls Movement as a solution to disrupt outdated stereotypes by creating the next generation of "Tech Girl Superheroes" through programs that teach girls technology skills and encourage them to pursue careers in STEM fields. It highlights the benefits of diversity for innovation and financial performance and promotes the positive impact of the Tech Girls Movement's initiatives in developing girls' skills and confidence.

The document discusses the importance of engagement and ethnography for understanding customer behavior. It states that engagement results from an exchange between brands and users, but to successfully engage people, one must identify their motivations and triggers beyond just digital interactions. Ethnography is presented as a tool to provide context behind customer data by gaining insights into people's experiences and behaviors. Conducting ethnographic research requires structure, employing methods like interviews and observations to develop compelling stories and uncover surprising insights that can help connect business opportunities to customer relevance.
This document discusses coaching for successful expatriation. It defines expatriates, inpatriates, and transpatriates. The top causes of expatriation failure are poor cultural assimilation, job and family issues, and lack of a repatriation plan. Effective coaching includes cross-cultural training, cultural sensitivity training, and support for spouses around employment and social networking. Coaching should clarify expectations and define the ideal candidate profile to set up expatriates for success.
The document discusses different types of thinking and the changing nature of work. It contrasts synthetic thought with addressing concepts and implications. It also references the agricultural, industrial, information, and conceptual ages and how the economy has shifted from being built on people's backs and left brains to right brains and qualities like purpose and meaning. The document asks questions about whether one's work can be outsourced or taught online and discusses emotional intelligence and being left or right brained.
This document discusses the ideal qualities of future-ready political contributors. It notes that the future of politics is challenging due to factors like lack of job security, need to stay updated on issues, demographic and opinion changes, and media exposure. However, the future can also be exciting if politicians understand technology, interact with people, involve youth, and address social issues realistically. The ideal political contributor is described as being results-oriented, demonstrating excellence in work, showing human concern, and acting ethically to build trust. Examples of various historic political figures are provided that exemplify these different qualities. The document concludes that it is up to voters to choose politicians that embody the ideal contributor qualities over just being dutiful workers.

What lies over the horizon? Scenarios to the Future of Social Sciences in the...Shermon Cruz
The year was 2040 when the social sciences transformed into something really unrecognizable.
The social science catalogue now includes courses like coding and decoding, myth and magic, food futures, reality engineering, micropolitics, macrohistory and macrofutures, decolonization, re-creativity and re-invention, foresight studies, big history and galaxies, robotics and space sciences, spirituality and social transformations, etc. This was the tip of the iceberg. The climate of uncertainty and the explosive success of digital technology not to mention some game-changing events like the Occupy Wall Street, the discovery of the Higgs-boson like particle, the emergence of culture as driver of new economic growth among others continue to influence our ways of knowing and re-perceiving the social sciences.
Recently, many academics have speculated about the future of the social sciences. The shape of things to come will certainly come in a digitized content and more according to experts. This paper explored some scenarios on the futures of the social sciences. It tracked emerging developments and explored the possible, plausible, and preferred social science scenarios in 2040. It employed the futures triangle and archetypal scenario (business as usual, best case, worst case, outliers) methods developed by Sohail Inayatullah and Peter Schwartz respectively. The purpose of this paper is to anticipate events and leverage the changes shaping the future of the social sciences.
International relations Senkaku Islands conflictjoepett
The Senkaku Islands dispute is a territorial conflict over a group of uninhabited islands between Japan, China, and Taiwan. The islands are claimed by all three countries and are located in valuable shipping lanes near potential oil and gas reserves. Japan has administered the islands since 1895 but China and Taiwan assert the islands were discovered by China in the 1400s. There have been numerous incidents of coast guard and military vessels from Japan and China patrolling the waters near the islands, escalating tensions between the countries. Proposed solutions have included joint development of resources in the disputed area, but no agreement has resolved which country has ultimate sovereignty.
This document provides an analysis of the drivers of Chinese policy in the South China Sea disputes. It begins with an introduction that defines the research boundaries and questions. The author aims to explore China's energy situation and how it determines their behavior in the disputes. Additionally, the author seeks to understand China's maritime assertiveness in relation to their cultural, historical and ideological perspectives. The conclusion will summarize key findings and offer ideas on prospects for regional cooperation, conflict resolution, and China's envisioned regional leadership role.

Community based foresight and scenario building workshop for agrarianShermon Cruz
This document summarizes a community-based foresight and scenario building workshop for agrarian reform communities held by Shermon O. Cruz. The workshop explored various futures landscapes and scenarios for agrarian reform communities and development, including a jungle, chess set, mountain tops, and stars. Participants discussed their visions and metaphors for the future, the present realities, and drivers shaping the future. They developed scenarios including best case, worst case, outliers, and business as usual for agrarian reform communities in 2025 while considering social, technological, environmental, economic, and political influences. The workshop aimed to help communities envision preferred futures through creative storytelling of headlines from 2012 to 2025 under different scenarios.
The document discusses the South China Sea, including its geography, economic potentials, and territorial disputes. It notes that the South China Sea is a semi-enclosed body of water located between several Southeast Asian countries. Economically, it has significance for maritime transport, oil and gas extraction, aquaculture, and tourism. However, sovereignty over islands and waters in the region is disputed, with China's "nine-dash line" claim overlapping territory claimed by other countries.

This document discusses four possible future scenarios for Panatag Island (Spratly Islands) using Jim Dator's four archetypes of alternative futures. The scenarios are:
1. An "Oil Race" scenario where countries increase exploration and exploitation of oil and gas resources in the region, risking an arms race.
2. A "Dangerous Games" scenario where increased military activity and tensions between countries could lead to local wars.
3. A "Conserver" scenario where the island becomes a protected marine reserve and site for international cooperation to preserve the environment.
4. A "Z" scenario involving deep diplomacy, demilitarization, joint development between countries, and the
Student Scenarios on the Futures of Philippine Higher Education Institution Shermon Cruz
This document outlines an agenda for a student scenario workshop on the futures of Philippine higher education institutions. It begins with an introduction to scenario basics and sample scenario studies. The main portion of the workshop involves dividing students into groups to facilitate scenario development through focused discussion. Scenarios are defined as hypothetical sequences of events constructed to focus on causal events and decisions. Examples provided include business as usual, worst case, best case, and outlier scenarios. Guiding principles for effective scenarios emphasize plausibility, internal consistency, and ability to elicit strategic thinking. The workshop concludes with groups presenting their scenarios and a reflection on the process.
India has opened a new naval base called INS Baaz in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to monitor the critical Strait of Malacca maritime route and counter China's growing influence in the region. The base will improve India's ability to monitor shipping traffic through the strait. There is also increasing competition between India and China for influence over Myanmar, as access through Myanmar could provide naval access to the strategic Strait of Malacca. Both countries are pursuing closer economic and military ties with Myanmar. In the South China Sea, India is exploring for oil with Vietnam despite Chinese objections, as Vietnam welcomes partnerships to balance China's growing power in the area.
China Impact in the New Asia Convergence Shermon Cruz
A decade ago, many have projected that China, with her intent of catching up with the West, will rise and surprise the world in gigantic ways.
Today, China is perceive as the epitome of grand narrative and vision that work. It is obvious that China is no longer a subsidiary matter but the larger issue that everyone has to grapple with.
There are more questions than answers but the interest of this paper tried to probe these questions: Will the rest of Asia benefit from what we call the rise of China? What are the hard and soft prospects in light of China’s expanding influence? Will these prospects create new opportunities for Asia and thus create the new Asia convergence? Or China being China wins it all leaving behind the prospects of other Asian nations to grow?
China has always defied our expectations and will continue to do so. But one thing or perhaps more things are certain: China’s dreams and visions of the future may be the most powerful in the world and Asia could use it as leverage in creating an alternative path for Asia.
This document outlines the historical origins and current disputes over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands between China and Japan. It notes that both countries claim sovereignty over the islands based on historical documents, with China claiming the islands were part of Taiwan and Japan claiming they were terra nullius in the late 19th century. The dispute has escalated in recent years due to rising nationalism in both countries and potential oil and gas resources near the islands. The document discusses three possible scenarios for managing the ongoing tensions.

The document discusses how UNCLOS has failed to reduce conflict over maritime issues. It argues that UNCLOS granting sovereignty over waters has increased tensions over resource competition. The expansion of EEZs and increased exploitation of ocean resources has also escalated disputes that UNCLOS has not been able to resolve. The South China Sea dispute is used as a case study to show how UNCLOS fails to prevent militarization and standoffs between countries claiming territory there. The document concludes that regional agreements have been more effective at reducing conflict than UNCLOS.

India is looking to sell naval vessels to Vietnam to strengthen their military relationship and reduce Vietnam's economic dependence on China. As two countries with territorial disputes with China, India and Vietnam have been strengthening their political, economic, and defense ties. Recent deals include India selling new naval vessels to Vietnam using a $100 million defense credit line. These vessels will help Vietnam modernize its navy and monitor shipping lanes and offshore oil installations. Strengthening trade and security cooperation between India and Vietnam also aims to counter China's influence in the region.
The EU has indicated its readiness to play a mediating role in the territorial disputes in the South China Sea. As a neutral party, the EU supports resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law. The EU would welcome an ASEAN request for assistance and hopes to prevent any further escalation of tensions. The South China Sea is an important trade route and fishing ground, but lacks regulation, and competing claims over its islands and waters have increased military tensions.
This is a career development workshop, which shifts participants' awareness toward a clarity of vision and career opportunities that "do well" for yourself while "doing good" for others.
This document discusses the need for higher education leaders to adopt a futures-oriented perspective to help transcend the "flatlands" of traditional futures thinking. It argues that traditional approaches have focused too much on prediction, technology, and Western models of progress. A futures studies perspective can help open up more viable, visible, and valuable futures by considering alternative futures through concepts like foresight literacy and strategic thinking. It presents a leadership model called the "Triple-V" approach that integrates foresight, strategic thinking, and strategy formulation to help facilitate innovation and shape sustainable learning futures.

Creating effective learning in Social Age - presentation for LPI LDN2014 - Ju...Julian Stodd
My presentation from the Learning Performance Institute Learning Directors Network session in July 2014. Exploring the Social Age of learning and it's impacts on learning design for both organisations and individuals.
The Session explores Social Learning and Leadership, the role of Communities, the Social Contract between organisations and individuals and the need for us to protect those who are disenfranchised through technology or culture.
It also includes the early iterations of my latest work around Creativity and Innovation in organisations.
Workshop the CAIR model of Culture (march 2014) v1Julian Stodd
The CAIR model of how organisational culture fails explores four dimensions of pressure and looks at how this leads to rifts in trust and toxic behaviours.
It's about the COST of belonging to a culture.
We explore how these pressures form and look at the online diagnostic i've developed to let us structure conversations around culture and change.
This document discusses the future and how digital technologies are driving shifts in many industries and aspects of society. Some key points:
- Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology will continue to disrupt many industries and potentially impact employment levels.
- Digital technologies have already transformed how human information is recorded and industries like music, news, and banking.
- Predicting the future is difficult, as change is deep and non-linear. Different narratives around technological progress, financial values, and ecological perspectives shape expectations.
- The future is not predetermined, but is influenced by the narratives we adopt and the decisions we make based on those narratives in the present. Liberal arts skills like creativity, empathy
The document discusses building innovation ecosystems and outlines questions to consider when analyzing an ecosystem. It notes that while traditional economics focused on gears (capital, labor, etc.), real economic activity is carried out by human beings impacted by geography, culture, and lack of trust. To develop innovation, we must build tribes of trust through diversity, collaboration, and experimentation. It provides "Rules of the Rainforest" for cultivating such ecosystems, including breaking rules and dreaming, trusting and being trusted, and failing fast and cheaply. It poses questions to evaluate elements like leadership, talent, ideas, capital, collaboration, and culture within an ecosystem.
They think about maximizing social impact over profits.
How Do Social Entrepreneurs
Think Differently?
In summary, social entrepreneurs think differently than traditional entrepreneurs in the following key ways:
- They prioritize social/environmental mission over profits. Impact is the bottom line.
- They see markets primarily as a means to scale impact, not maximize income/returns. Price and value are determined based on benefiting stakeholders, not maximizing profits.
- Success is measured by social/environmental outcomes like lives improved, not just financial returns. Metrics track multiple bottom lines of people, planet and profits.
- Stakeholders include those benefiting from as well as investing in the venture
This document provides an overview of a workshop on shaping sustainable futures. It introduces Forum for the Future and their work on sustainability challenges. The workshop will explore citizen-driven innovation, scenarios for sustainable societies in Europe in 2050, and how participants can help enable positive futures. Activities include discussing innovations seen today, key changes over 20 years, and what lifestyles may be like for different 2050 scenarios. The goal is for participants to reflect on pathways to sustainable futures and how they can support each other as citizen innovators.
This document discusses cultural intelligence (CQ) and how virtual worlds may help foster it. It provides background on CQ, defining it as an individual's ability to function effectively in culturally diverse situations. Virtual worlds are proposed to enhance CQ through immersive cultural content and interactions between avatars. The document also summarizes a study on the Dream It. Do It initiative, finding some evidence it increased youths' motivational and metacognitive CQ through international teamwork. However, future research is needed that directly measures CQ changes and emphasizes experiential learning.
This document discusses potential strategic directions for HGS to address declining membership trends. It suggests conducting an analysis of HGS's current position by examining metrics like membership, finances, and website usage. Comparisons to other societies are proposed to identify differences. Reinventing HGS's core proposition and creating compelling new content are recommended to engage members and the public. Specific proposed projects and opportunities are mentioned to demonstrate public benefit. Forming project teams and leveraging outside expertise are offered to help implement initiatives. Overall, the document argues for taking action and provides ideas for how HGS can reverse trends and thrive in the future.
This was presented during the Maharlika Summit 2014 in the University of the Philippines Diliman in February 22, 2014. I was one of the plenary speakers representing the Center for Engaged Foresight. The presentation was to show the initial findings and reflections of the CEF on how the Maharlika narrative is seen from a futures perspective by deconstructing it to show headlines, systems that govern it, worldviews pertaining to it and the underlying myth and metaphors. Questions ere posed to the audience in an effort to situate Maharlika in a futures context.
1) The document discusses future trends in tourism including megatrends like globalization, individualism, and an increasing focus on community and sustainability.
2) It explores how these megatrends could impact tourism through more personalized and tailored experiences that meet changing identities, a focus on communities and belonging, and businesses operating in a self-conscious and holistic way.
3) Examples of future concepts discussed include the "vacation house of the future" and trends like slowing down, downshifting, and conscious consumption.

The document discusses the need for marginalized groups in India to become more politically active and organized. It analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches. It then proposes creating a new political organization called "Hindustaan Hamaara" that would bring together people from various faiths and backgrounds, including Hindus, minorities, atheists, to work towards ensuring constitutional rights and protections for all through political activism, legal interventions, and contesting elections. Detailed plans are discussed for the organization's structure, functional areas, symbols and establishing a framework to effectively mobilize support and resources.

This document discusses the role of research and accountability in sustainable development. It notes that research has played a crucial role in human progress from early humans to the modern era. However, we are not fully harnessing the resources and technologies now available. Accountability is important for development, with four pillars: responsibility, answerability, trustworthiness, and liability. Research provides opportunities to address issues through generating ideas and innovation. Challenges like quality, outputs, mindsets must be overcome. If resources are properly harnessed and researchers are accountable, research can play a key role in development.
The document discusses human-centered design and policymaking. It explores how ideas become policy and how justice can be designed. The author argues that policymaking is an existential act of designing the future. When creating policy, the focus should be on intentional decision making, changing situations to affirm human dignity, and making people's needs knowable. The document then discusses a case study of using human-centered design to address disparities for young black men in Seattle. It involved career exploration and mentoring through immersive company visits and job workshops. The outcomes included increased diversity, income, and positive feedback from participants.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
5. unlock the future, to undo it from so-called
default futures or official futures predicted by
experts, banks, corporations, news headlines,
individuals, etc.
In fact, futures studies are not at all about
prediction as the future cannot be known.
6. To Jim Dator, “there are no future facts and
there are no past possibilities”
Futures studies are concerned with creating the
future rather than predicting it.
7. Basic futures concepts
• Preferred future - desired
• Probable future – likely based on current
trends and strategies
• Possible futures – full range of alternatives
(Sohail Inayatullah, 2012)
8. Core futures thinking
• Not one future but futureS
• Humans have agency, they can influence the
future
• The image of the future pulls toward a future
• Question assumptions to create alternative
futures (Sohail Inayatullah, 2012)
9. Is the future of the first people
nations/communities colonized?
10. Why indigenous community foresight?
• Explore and develop a model for the future of the
first people of Saranggani and the future
generations
• Gain insight from our engagements and exciting
discussion and act on it!
• We are all eligible to create the future
• Reconfigure the present from the future
• Purpose is not merely to forecast but to create
the future that we want for Saranggani
11. Why indigenous community foresight?
• Re-emergence of the cultural
• Wave of cultural power
• The emerging cultural infrastructure epidemic
• Modernity is shaping/morphing to fit with
culture/local/spiritual – Transmodernism
14. Munato Alternative Futures?
• What will the future be like in the year 2040?
• What are your fears about the future?
• What are your hopes, your visions of the future?
• What is missing? Are there hidden assumptions,
things that we took for granted from the future
forecasted or desired?
• What is your preferred, your desired future?
• What actions can we take to achieve that
preferred future? (Thanks to Sohail)
