This document discusses the decline of intellectualism over generations and proposes potential causes and solutions. It suggests that intellectualism is lacking due to a lack of reading culture, shallow innovation focused only on quick results, a lack of cultural and historical identity, narrow thinking, and a poor work ethic. However, Asia is held up as an exception for maintaining cultural identity and a strong work ethic. The document proposes promoting an "Asian world" model, encouraging innovation, evaluation, and replication of diverse Asian systems. Individuals, governments, and industries all have roles to play in investing in knowledge, rewarding hard work and innovation.

Presentation made to UNDP Delhi team to persuade them as to why it is important to recognise, respect and reward creative individuals and communities at the grassroots level. The innovations for and from grassroots are both important but former get more attention than the latter. Dev programs should aim at giving voice visibility and velocity to frugal and sustainable solutions. grassroots innovations are not jugaad, they are borne aout of numeorus iterations of experiments and trials. The Honey Bee Network started 30 years ago is keen to support such efforts globally. it also seeks volunteers to join hands with us see sristi.org, gian.org,. nifindia.org anilg.sristi.org

Technology: what are we losing? Does it matter? Michael Coghlan
Such is the scale of change wrought by the current Digital Age that it is being compared with the profound changes that occurred as a result of the invention of printing in the 15th century, and the industrial revolution of the 18th century. Every new wave of technology produces changes. Some of these changes are immediately welcome, and their benefits obvious. Some changes are easy to see and predict. Other changes take time, are less immediately obvious, and are not always welcome. With each change, with each gain, there is some loss.
We are clearly in the middle of massive technology driven change. What then are we losing? Is this loss an inevitable consequence of change? Should we be trying to identify practices and values that ought not to change, or has that horse already bolted?

China - Will It Redefine Our Digital Landscape? (SXSW Presentation)Freddie Laker
This is a audio recording of my presentation at SXSW 2012. It includes the questions and answers section at the end so the total running time is actually around 35 minutes excluding the Q&A. I had a blast presenting that day so I hope you enjoy the content as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Similar to [Challenge:Future] Dearth of Intellectualism (20)
2. One will agree that
intellectualism over the
centuries, from one
generation to another has
experienced a gradual
decay.
Nonetheless, in any society or
civilization there is always an
exemption – a constant k
that show how other things
have changed
3. Why do we experience this dearth in
intellectualism?
Is it that there is no room for further
innovation or breakthrough that will
shake or mold the world such as
Einstein’s e=mc2 or Newton’s discovery
of gravitational force?
4. Symptoms: Dearth of Intellectualism
Lack of reading culture
When last did you read a decent book
that added knowledge to you – not an
article from your iPad on the latest app
upgrade or the fastest new car in town?
Light-weight innovation
Has the internet brought about a rush for
only easy and fast path to innovation?
An information age sees everyone wanting
to be like Facebook and Google, leaving the
labs empty
5. Symptoms (Contd.)
Who are You?
We’ve got growing population of
people without a sense of history
and cultural identity
Where are you headed?
“You can’t know where you are
going if you don’t know where you
are coming from”
6. Symptoms (Contd.)
Parochial View . Linear Thinking .
Bandwagon Effect
The world is a global village and it’s easy to be
trendsetters, but then we neglect the side
effects: very narrow outlook and tendency
for easy replication, which in large scale
causes stunted development and scarcity
of innovation
Poor Work Ethic
Can this be attributed to the yarn to live life
on the fast-lane? After all life is short and
things are moving at the speed of light (or is
it sound?) Or are we just lazy and don’t want
to be as hardworking as we should be?
7. Who is Safe?
Asia has tried to be the exception:
• Retaining cultural identity –
language, dressing, cuisine, art, arc
hitecture, etc.
• Quality work ethic in all spheres
including education and industry
It is evident that the world now looks to Asia for ‘how-to’ function as a
country, community, company, institution – educational, financial, and even
governmental; as they thrive in development – economy and innovation
8. What Action Steps?
Do we go for an Asian World?
Not all countries can be like China and
other Asian countries as the system does
not work for all countries but tweaking
the variables and replicating models will
do the trick
Innovate . Evaluate . Replicate
Asia has a diverse system of operations
– from China to Korea and Singapore.
Yet all have thrived for the same
reasons.
9. Who are the players?
~ Individual ~
People have strife to know who
they are – starting from where
they come from via history, as this
shapes the path.
~ Government ~
Investment in the area of
knowledge and capacity building.
Set policies that will reward good
work ethic and innovation
~ Industry ~
Create room for innovation based on
research and aimed at development –
without profit being the major drive
