Communication requires skill in listening and exchanging information with others. It is a two-way process that involves carefully preparing messages and staying alert to ensure the audience understands correctly. Developing strong communication skills involves being honest, interested in others, thinking before speaking, avoiding aggression, using plain language, and taking time. Nonverbal cues like eye contact and body language also greatly impact communication. Good interpersonal skills include listening, asking questions, relaxing, smiling, being assertive but not pushy, showing enthusiasm, learning from interactions, and gaining feedback to improve over time. Effective presentations have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion to tell the audience what will be covered and reinforce the main points.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
2. Talking is very easy, but communication, that means an
exchange or communion with the other person, requires the
greater skill.
Anexchange which is the communion demands on the way we listen and do speak
skillfully, and just not talk mindlessly.
ListenandLearnElias
3. Communication is the skill and like any other skills it also
requires the practice
Mostimportant thing to remember is a message which you intend to communicate is
most likely to be misunderstood by the listeners. Therefore, in addition to the
carefully preparing and presenting the message,
stayalert for any of the signs which your audience aremis-interpreting it.
Elias
4. Tipsfor Effective Communication
• Be honest while communicating. Dishonesty will somewhere show up along a line.
• Take interest in the people you are communicating with. Remember the people are
more attracted towards those who have interest in them, and pays more attention
to what they say.
• Think before you speak or put pen to paper: what message you trying to convey?
What outcome do you want to elicit?
• Be direct and not aggressive. Lot of flannelling around can make the people lose
interest and miss a vital point.
Elias
5. Contd.
• Don't use the jargon – and acronyms, and also the technical expressions, unless
you are sure about that your listeners do understand
• Write the way as you will speak. Do not fall into a trap of using the long words just
because it is written down.
• Take time. Whether in the speech or in paper, rushing will make you seem nervous,
unconfident and like downright scared.
Elias
6. Body Language
Weall do communicate with one another through our look as well as what we do say
and how do we sound. In fact what our body is doing while we are talking (i.e.
the body language) could often play much greater part in the communication
than we do think.
• The eyecontact
• Thegesture
• ThePresence
• The Movement and the Space
Elias
7. What we mean for Interpersonal communication skills
Interpersonal communication skills are a collection of processes we use to interact
with other people, and they are an important component of the relationship
building process.
It is how well you communicate with someone and how well you behave or carry
yourself. Also they help people further their careers.
Elias
8. TheInterpersonal Communication Skills
Abilityto ask the questions and listen are vital to the good interpersonal skills. In fact
the empathetic listening is a number one skill which can help to build the
relationships.
Elias
9. Ten Tips for Good Interpersonal Skills
• Listen to the person first.Communication is the two-way process; getting all
your message across depends on understanding a other person.
• Be interested in peopleyou will be communicating with. Remember that the
people are more attracted towards those who have interest in them, and
therefore will pay more attention to what they will say.
• Relax. The bad body language like hunched shoulders, fidgeting, the toe-
tapping or the hair-twiddling all give a game away.
• Smile and use the eye contact. It is a most positive signal which you can give.
• Ask the questions. It is great way to show the people that you really are
interested in them.
Elias
10. Contd.,
• If the other personhas different point of viewtowards you find out why they
have such point of view. More you understand reasons behind their thinking
more you will be able to understand their point of view or can help them
understand your point of view.
• Be assertive. so that we can try to value their input as your own inputs. Do not
be pushy and do not be a pushover. Try for a right balance.
• When you will be speaking try to be enthusiastic in appropriate context. Use
voice and the body language to show this.
• Immediately don't try to latch to something which someone has just now
said ... "oh yes it happened to me" and immediately go on and telling your own
story. Make sure that you ask questions about them first and then be careful
while telling your story so asnot to sound like a competition.
• Learn from the interactions. If you have a good conversation with someone try
to think why it all went well and remember key points for the next time. If it did
not go well - again try and learn something out of it.
Elias
11. Presentation Skills
Remembernobody isborn as natural speaker.Of course we can bawl the heads off and
make heck of the noise when we were been born - but it isnot quite same!
Greatest speakers today have not just become great overnight! They do have spent
lot of time practicing reviewing and reading about the way to improve getting the
specific one-to-one feedback on how to improve and also having lots of
specializedtrainingand thecoaching.
Elias
12. Threeclearly identifiable parts - Introduction followed by the
main body and finally the conclusion.
Often this is expressed as:
• Tell what you are going to tell them
• Tell them
• Tell what you have told them.
Elias
