Then and Now: Changes of Racism, Sexism, and Classism
In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout, the protagonists in the book, experience
and learn about the problems of racism, sexism, and classism when their father, Atticus, agrees to
defend Tom Robinson, an African American
, in a trial. Set in the 1930s, most people were treated
unfairly because of their race, gender, or social class. Even though problems about race, gender, and
class decreased over time, these problems are still very prevalent today. Even though racism
decreased dramatically over the past decades, there are still problems today that are strikingly
similar to the problems in To Kill A Mockingbird. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains to
Jem and Scout about the unfairness of court: when it s a white man s word against a black man s,
the white man always wins. They re ugly, but those are the facts of life (Lee 220). Even though
this was set in the 1930 s, juries from court still have a racial bias to this day. In fact, from the
Sentencing Project, an organization that advocates change in sentencing policy and advocating
alternatives to incarceration, it has been shown that African Americans are six times more likely to
be incarcerated than white males... if current trends continue, one of every three black Americans
can expect to go to prison in his lifetime (Sentencing Project 1). In the United States, people have

Drug Pros And Cons Essay
There are also some pro and cons of drug testing. Although drugs are seen in a negative manner
there are some advantages. Performance enhancements are also used to help recover from injuries
quickly. Drugs can also help reduce anxiety, pain, and stress. Drugs are known to have more of a
negative effect on health than positive (Jost, Kenneth 24). Although, they are known to have a
short term enhancement they, cause impotence, worsening acne, balding and steroid rage. (Jost,
Kenneth 26). Another con of drug use is creating an unfair advantage. Performance enhancements
do not create a level playing field but rather a competitive advantage. The use of drugs can also
create health problems and death. Once addicted it may be hard to become sober. The use of
steroids can create liver abnormalities, altered appearances, and psychiatric illnesses(Wong, Glenn
50). Finally, the use of drugs can create legal penalties and expenses. A major case in the
professional sport industry that has a huge influence on anti doping are the following is
BALCO.BALCO is a scandal that involves the use of performance enhancements. Barry Bondsa
former Major League Baseballplayer was found to be in a scandal with his former trainer Greg
Anderson. Because Anderson was found guilty of giving athletes steroids this led to the
speculation of Bonds using drugs. His defense was that the drugs were used for arthritis and
dietary needs. However, Barry Bonds were convicted for four counts perjury and one

The Affordable Care Act And Emergency Medical Services
The Affordable Care Act and Emergency Medical Services
Each year in the United States approximately 114 million people visit their local Emergency
Department (ED), and 16 million of these patients arrive by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
(Board et al.) Health care in America has moved from an individual, fee for service health care
system, towards a more integrated healthcare system i.e., The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which
is a government controlled healthcare system, and is set up to be a value based payment system.
The ACA will expand and transform the roles of EMS within the healthcare system. EMS s
ability to survive and thrive in this new era of healthcare, will revolve, in part, on its ability to
articulate its value to healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, hospital systems, and payers,
as well as patients and family members. (Smith) EMS can thrive in the future, if it embraces
change. John F. Kennedy had this to say about change, Change is the law of life. And those who
look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. (BrainyQuote) In order for EMS to
thrive in the changes that the future is bringing, it must: focus on mobile integrated healthcare, be
data driven in their clinical practices. There are three other areas that will be discussed at length,
EMS agencies should be actively pursuing a community paramedicine program, EMS using remote
telemedicine and EMS moving towards a value based payment system.

The SUmmer of a Jupiter Symphony Essay
The Summer of a Jupiter Symphony The year is 1788 as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began to
work on his last three symphonies during a time of strife for musicians as the Austro Turkish War
continues to war on in Austria. Tired from moving his family from central Vienna to the suburbs of
Alsergrund all while in debt to his ears as he continued to borrow money from friends including a
fellow mason, Michael Puchberg, Mozart finished his final symphony on August 10, 1788. This
piece, nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony, coined by impresario Johann Peter Saloman, was Mozart s
longest symphony with a total of four movements, a typical symphonic form during the Classical
era. The Jupiter Symphony totals to about forty five minutes of music ending... Show more content

Mozart was known for having an ear that would make any musician envious. From a young age
he was able to listen to any piece of music and his mind would interpret all of that data with ease.
While in Rome, he listened to a performance of Gregorio Allegri s Miserere only twice at the
Sistine Chapel and was able to write it down for memory when he got home (Abert 135). After
Mozart and his father returned to Italy from a ten year tour, Mozart was employed by Prince
Archbishop Hieronymus Collero to be a court musician in the year 1773. With a pay check of
only 150 florins a year though, Mozart began to look for other job ventures and began to try to
write operas that he hoped would help kick start his career as a professional musician. It was not
until 1782 when Mozart began to receive the credit that he deserved. Performing on multiple
local keyboard competitions, he was soon established as one of the best keyboard players in
Vienna. Finally in 1783, as he finished writing the opera Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, he
began to be seen as a successful independent composer and started to receive a reputation as such
(Abert 642). As Mozart got older, he matured even more as a composer writing a total of over six
hundred pieces including symphonies, operas, concertos, and other styles of pieces during his life

Comparison Of Evidence And Pattern Evidence
Comparison of latent fingerprints found at the crime scene with exemplar prints, comparison of
bite marks on a victim, DNA evidence, hair and fibre matching are some of the example of pattern
comparison in forensic science (Coyle, Field Wenderoth, 2009). Comparison of pattern evidence in
forensic science is to determine whether the same kind of the properties of forensic traces may
have come from a common (or related source) (Found Edmond, 2012). There are varieties of
techniques in forensic pattern evidencethat make associations between physical traces. The
association of one or more traces might be helpful in the investigation of a crime that usually can
support an inference (Cole, Berthental Seelagy, 2016).
Pattern evidence is any item where a mark or impression has been made during criminal activity
with the purpose of associating the mark with the object or implement that made it. Although
fingerprints are the most prominent form of forensic pattern evidence, but there are other types of ...

Identification is the process of determining a substance s physical or chemical identity of a
substance such as drug analysis, species determination and explosive residue analysis as near
absolute certainty as existing analytical techniques will permit (Saferstein, 2014). These are forms
of physical evidence that become crucial to solving a crime. With the use of new technology, the
scientists are able to determine if a known sample of a small fibre, paint chip, or shoe pattern is
consistent with the unknown sample found at the scene. When individual characteristics are

The Meaning Of Life In Thornton Wilder s Our Town
The diverse ways writers answer this question stems from their worldview. For the atheist
Samuel Beckett, there was no meaning to life. He narrated a story of two babbling idiots who he
believed were foolish to wait around for Godot. His pointless view of life manifests in the way he
creates his characters: they are characters who do not go and do anything.
In Our Town, Thornton Wilder stresses people looking at one another. He narrates Emily Webb s
horror as she looks back on an ordinary day of her former life. Wilder wants to illustrate the beauty
in a slow lifestyle. He wants to show that immense value lies in slowness.
In The Grand Inquisitor, Dostoevsky narrates that the meaning of life as a life full of love. Towards
the end of the book, Father Zossima states, What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being
unable to love. In this story, Alyosha was not as good of a philosopher as Ivan. Furthermore,
Alyosha was not as smart as Ivan. However, Alyosha had authority and fulfillment through love. He
had fulfillment through the love of Christ.
In The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis shows that the a meaningful life is one that is lived in surrender
to God. Lewis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I am reminded of 1 Corinthians 10:31 which states, So whether you eat or drink or whatever you
do, do it all for the glory of God. Waiting for Godot shows the value in doing things. The pitiful
existence of Vladimir and Estragon show that there is meaning in work whatever work may look
life. However, Vladimir and Estragon also show the natural human desire to hope in something
greater than finite human knowledge and gain. This correlates to the Great Divorce where Lewis
shows that meaning and fulfillment can only come from repenting and living in surrender to God
almighty. In Our Town, Wilder shows the value in looking at others. One can only love after they
have looked. Father Zossima wisely explains that hell is anywhere where one cannot

How Did Artie Get A Job
Once upon a time, there was a famous city in a far away land called the City of Jobs. In the City
of Jobs, there were people from all around the world who each had their very own unique careers.
There was Mrs. Lin, from China, who owned a shop that sold colorful silks of every color. Mr.

Public Opinion Polls Have Both Flaws And Encouraging Data
Before I go into answering the questions directly, it should be understood that public opinion
polls have both flaws and encouraging data. Pubic opinion polls if done appropriately will give
the general feel of how the population is feeling towards an issue. It all depends on whether the
sampling is comparative to the population, for example if you have a population of One Hundred
Thousand and you only sample one hundred, the results will not be as accurate if the sampling
size was bigger. Also, the person conducting the interviews of these opinion polls must not be
biased to one side or the other. They must remain centered on the subject and not influence the
answers that are given. Asking specific questions about real issues can result is promising
polling data. Opinion polls should be used to collect data, and must also be used in a way that
reflects accurate data. By not having accurate data that can lead to bad decision making or lead
to mistrust among the community and the police departments. One of the biggest missuses of
opinion polls was in the presidential election in the 1948 were the Chicago Daily Tribune
printed election results on bad opinion polling and looked foolish for doing so. So these polls
should be used with caution and constructed in a way that does not allow for misrepresentation of
the publics true views as it has in the past. Well one of the first things I would tell the director
before looking at the poll would be to not base any decisions

Comparing Thomas Hobbes And John Locke Laws Of Nature
The Laws of Nature
Both Hobbes and Locke come up with their own versions of the laws of nature. A law of nature
is a general rule that is come to by reason and common sense. Unlike a civil law, the laws of
nature don t have to be written down. These laws are just put into place by basic human reason.
The laws of nature are thought of when talking about the state of nature. Both Hobbes and Locke
discuss the state of nature, but see it in different ways, resulting in different laws of nature per the
two philosophers.
Hobbes sees the state of nature as a horrible place where fear rules every person living inside of
it. In his book Leviathan , he concluded that men must seek peace to preserve their own life.
Because of this Hobbes says that the first law of nature is, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This mutual transferring of rights is called a contract and becomes the basis for moral obligation
per Hobbes. The third law of nature states that we can to just make contracts but must hold to every

accounts of the laws of nature affect his overall political philosophy by making him see the state of
nature as an unforgiving place of war and that men should do everything possible to escape it.
He believed that even when under a government that is corrupt and oppressive, would be better that
being under no government at all and being in the state of nature.
In the Second Treatise of Civil Rights , Locke sees the state of nature as a place of equality, where
no one has power over the other and all can do whatever it is that they want.
However, this liberty still does not give someone the right to do harm on to another (Locke, 365).
He determines from this statement that natural law exist in the state of nature. He says that each

statement explains, If you have a body, you are an athlete (Nike, 2013). The She Runs campaign is
in line with this mission statement, as they encourage all types of women to get involved and
inspire them to discover their own athletic potential. This motivates women to consider themselves
as athletic, modifying their self schema and therefore shaping their behaviours, perceptions and

Social Psychology, Culture and Attitudes
Nike identified that women have a tendency towards self handicapping behaviour. Women perceive
running in groups as competitive and intimidating, leaving them to overcome running fears and
goals in isolation (AdNewsAus 2013). This is greatly contrasted to the female stereotype and
inclination to discuss and partake in shared experiences (MarketingMag 2013). Nike recognised this
behaviour and turned it into an opportunity through the formation of the She Runs community. Due
to the need of belonging, women have conformed to the actions of those in their reference group
both on and offline in the campaign. Women are connected to those that share their aspirations,
beliefs, attitudes and their ideal self . This community continues to grow due to conformity and how

Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter Absurd Influences in Theatre There are a wide variety of
theatrical movements that have occurred over time. One of these includes the theatre of the absurd.
Theater of the absurd refers to the literary movement in drama popular throughout European
countries from the 1940s to approximately 1989. A definition of the term absurdism is referred to a
literary and philosophical movement that flourished after the Second World War and bears a close
relationship to Existentialism. Absurdism s signature attitude is therefore black humor, an
ambiguous mixture of tragic pathos and preposterous comedy, which finds it compelling literary
expression in the work of authors such as Samuel Beckett ( Absurdism 3). In this paper, I will
explore the development of absurdism in two different plays, The Room and Waiting for Godot.
The absurdist type of plays often seek to explore the spiritual loneliness, isolation, and anxiety of
the down and outs of society. Theater of the Absurd are often pointless and contain no
underlying messages. They have been described as moving in a circle with no true plot. The
movement of the absurd commonly refers to the work of a group of dramatists who first emerged
during and after World War II. I have choose to pick a play from Samuel Beckett as well as Harold
Pinter to observe their influence on the movement of absurd theatre.

Bladder Cancer Research Paper
Bladder Cancer The bladder is a hollow organ in the pelvis with muscular walls. Its main function
is to store the urine. Urine is made by the kidneys. The ureters then carry the urine to the bladder.
From there a long muscular tube called the urethra carries the urine from the bladder to the
outside world. The bladder has several layers which are made up of different types of cells.
Bladder cancer starts when the cells in the urinary bladderstart to grow uncontrollably. Most
bladder cancers start in the deepest layer of the bladder which is called the urothelium. If the
cancer grows onto the other layers of the bladder it then becomes more advanced and can be harder
to treat. The cancer then may spread outside the bladder to the lymph nodes... Show more content on

Can bladder cancer be treated? Possibly, with these four treatment plans: surgery, intravesical
therapy, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy. Surgery is the most common type people use
to get rid of bladder cancer. Two most common types of surgery people use are Transurethral
surgery and a Cystectomy. Transurethral surgery is when tumors in the bladder are removed
through the urethra. Cystectomy is when part or the entire bladder is removed. A partial
cystectomy is when only the tumor is removed. Close by lymph nodes are also removed. This
surgery allows the person to keep part of their bladder, but it will be smaller so they might have
to go more often. The cancer might also come back in a different part of the bladder (2016
American Cancer Society, Inc). The second treatment for bladder cancer a person may use is a
method called Intravesical therapy. Intravesical therapy is when the doctor puts a liquid drug into
the bladder. By putting the drug into the bladder the cells inside the bladder will be killed and the
cells everywhere else will have no effect. This type of therapy is used only for early stages of
bladder cancer. The third type of treatment is Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is killing cancer cells
by using drugs. Most chemotherapy drugs are either given by mouth or through a vein. When the
drug enters the bloodstream it spreads through the body.

Is America A Melting Pot Essay
Is America melting pot? According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 47% of hate crimes are

some parts of the United statescan be considered a melting pot. Living in the united states we are

Flipping Pages While Drinking Coffee Essay
Flipping Pages While Drinking Coffee
I never really got into the world of coffee shops especially a coffee shop/bookstore all in one.
When I used to think of Barnes and Noble, I thought of people like my cousin who is somewhat
snobbish and would spend her evenings there reading and drinking her coffee. The other type of
person that seemed like they would fit there is, I guess what one would call, a bookworm or nerd. I
know that seems a bit harsh, but one tends to get stereotypes of things that are unfamiliar to them.

After I left that area, I continued to walk around. I noticed many people sitting on plush couches
and I wished that I could find one to sit on. I had no luck in that area. They seemed to be
everyone else s favorites too. So I kept on going. On the opposite side of the store was an area
that was quite open, compared to the rest of the store. This area contained larger tables with
more chairs around them. There was a group of ladies there who seemed to be having a meeting.
After my tour of the store I went back to my friend and we sat at one of the few tables left. It was
quite small and right next to the coffee shop.
After we sat down I tried to look around to see what type of person was there. It seemed as
though there were many students there. Some of them were studying, while others were
socializing. I had pictured that it would have a quiet atmosphere like that of a library. On the
contrary, it was actually quite noisy around the coffee shop area. As you got farther away from
this area though, it tended to become quieter as people settled down into the comfy couches to
read. But as for the area that we were in, there seemed to be many conversations going on all at
once. As we were sitting there I heard one girl say to another, May I ask you a personal question.
My ears perked up as I waited for the next part and then she talked quieter and I did not get to hear
it. I was so disappointed, because I thought I might have something juicy

The SEIU believes that the Healthcare industry is important and must have a voice. The Nurse

The SEIU counts 84,000 nurses among its members. (Bush) In direct competition with the SEIU

Overall, The Forest of Hands and Teeth was exciting and had some romance between all the
characters. I personally like the book it is very interesting I would recommend this book for anyone

The Shape of the American Military, Technology, Culture Essay
Technology and the American Way of War Since 1945 covers in detail a wide range of weapons
systems, technologies, and other equipment developed by the United States Military. Naturally, a
significant amount of Mahnken s book places a heavy emphasis on technologies and systems
developed during the Cold War. The book could almost be examined as a complete history of the
development of military technology during that period, however, the author has a much more
significant purpose for his work than to just educate the reader on military history. Mahnken says,
This book is about the interaction of technology and culture in the context of the strategic
environment. It argues that technology both shaped and was shaped by the culture of the U.S....

Two, it put no personnel in immediate danger (Mahnken, loc. 330 340).
Another question is whether or not nuclear weapons had revolutionized warfare and the use of
ground forces. Mahnken writes that The advent of nuclear weapons and strategic air power
appeared to call into question the utility of traditional ground forces (Mahnken, loc. 665). While
nuclear weapons were certainly an advantage in warfare, not every situation is going to call for the
use of a nuclear weapon. History has shown that even in the most recent of conflicts, militaries
continue to rely on ground forces. Perhaps the advancement of aircraft and their technologies have
been much more crucial to the changes in modern day militaries and how they fight wars.
However, history has shown that even recent conflicts continue to rely on ground forces to some
extent. The use of air power may have taken over, but nuclear advancements seem to be of little
consequence today. Air bombings and the use of smart weapons has dramatically increased, but
troops still hit the ground.
As previously stated, Mahnken proposes that technology is not only shaped by culture, but that
technology itself shapes culture. Changes in higher education prove him to be right. By the early
70 s there were over 10,000 engineers employed in the aerospace industry (Mahnken, loc. 788).

Like Keegan, Mahnken believes culture and society will help shape technology. In his book s

The Is An Incompatibisist Concerning Determinism And Free...
Holbach is an incompatibisist concerning determinism and free will. In compatibilism is the
view that beliefs in determinism and free will are inconsistent. Inconsistent when you have two
beliefs that are inconsistent if and only if it is impossible for them both to be true at the same
time. Meaning one has to be at least must actually be false. The beliefs I am talking about are
determined and to see if the will is free? He thinks at least one must be false at all times meaning
he believes that we do not have free will. Hume as a very different view than Holbach in some
regards. One way he is different is; Hume is a compatibilist this means he believes in determinism
and free will are consistent. Hume has a different view on what free will even is and he also
believes we have liberty. Liberty is the absence of external constraint. Hume disagrees with
Holbach because; Holbach feels that free will requires anything more than liberty. Holbach
argument of free will starts with his premises one. Every action is caused by a preceding event.
Premise two states; no action that is caused by a preceding event is free. Thus, no action is free.
Holbach supports his theory by his belief in determinism in premise one and being an
incompatibles. He believes that are actions re not caused that they are only absence of the external
constraint. Hume arguments that if good were to will it, we would be all be happy. Yet, neither

feet and flexible joints (NIH, 2012). Learning is difficult for people with Fragile X Syndrome
because the syndrome affects the ability to think, learn and reason, with problems ranging from
mild learning issues to severe developmental disability (NIH, 2012). Other characteristics include
behavioral, social and emotional problems including anxiety in new situations, problems making
eye contact, attention disorders and aggresive behavior (NIH, 2012). Speech, and language
problems also exist with Fragile X Syndrome, including trouble speaking clearly, stuttering, speech
may come later than others their age, few may never speak. Lastly, many children with Fragile X
Syndrome have sensory issues and can be bothered by bright lights, loud noises, or the way
clothing feels on their skin, which can cause the child to act out (Sue, Sue, Stanley, 2010).
Down Syndrome is a condition caused by the presecnce of an extra chromosome called trisomy

Superheroes, Despite Their Different Powers, All Possess
Superheroes, despite their different powers, all possess similar characteristics that define them,
such as courage, honesty, selflessness, and the maintenance of strong morals. Similarly, King Lear,
the tragic hero in William Shakespeare s play, King Lear, possesses characteristics that define him
as a tragic hero, as stated by Aristotle in Poetics via A.C. Bradley s The Shakespearean Tragic
Hero. King Learis a character of high social status, and he possesses exceptional qualities that make

However, as the play progresses, his suffering that is caused by the impulsive decision to divide
his kingdom is clearly seen. This suffering is illustrated through the loss of his sanity, ultimately
due to the sudden loss of his power, his deteriorating relationships with his daughters, and the
inability to prevent these negative outcomes. Upon realizing his mistake of solely letting Regan
and Goneril inherit his kingdom, Lear is ashamed that [his daughters have the] power to shake
[his] manhood (I.iv.299 301). His daughters, who are women and are therefore considered to be
less important and powerful in his society, have taken control of Lear s power and life, and it is
embarrassing to him as he is used to receiving constant honour, pride, and glory as the King. This
illustrates the start of him losing his sanity, and soon, Lear is seen pleading to the gods to keep
[him] in temper and to not [let him] be mad, as he is stripped away from all that is his (I.v.43
44). As King Lear pleads for help to maintain his sanity, his sufferings are clearly illustrated as the
change in his character is evident; a change from a virtuous, powerful king, to a mentally
unstable, powerless, and embarrassed beggar like character. This form of suffering is unusual
because a sudden but significant loss of power is rare, especially for someone as powerful and
influential as a King. All the sudden negative

My Goals For This Class Based On The Sensory And Diangelo...
My goals for this class based on the Sensory and DiAngelo reading were to focus less on grades
and more on understanding of the concepts, the second was to strive for intellectual humility by
accepting what I do not know and being open to the concepts I do not know, my last goal was to
learn from my reactions towards subject material the may have bothered me by journaling or
researching more about the topic. (Sensory DiAngelo, 2012) These goals I set for the class were
met at times, but at other times I feel that I did not meet these goals as well as I intended to. The
first goal to focus less on grades was mostly met. I found myself not caring about the grades, but
then when I had trouble with a concept or I found myself taking longer to understand what was
being asked of me in the homework assignment I began to feel like my mark would suffer or that
I would get a really bad mark, and although I never got a very terrible mark, I did find myself
focusing on it too much at times. I found it was easier to focus less on the grade at the beginning
and at the end of the semester, so I just need to work on managing my stress in the middle of the
semester to keep myself from nitpicking my grades. I did find that when I did have the time to
write out notes for the readings or even just having notes in the margins it helped me understand
and my grades then reflected that, so for the future I will have to remember to keep that in mind.
For the second goal, which was to strive

Narcolepsy is a neurological, sleep disorder that affects 1 in 2000 Americans. It is not selective

everyone is susceptible to having narcolepsy. In addition narcolepsy is often misunderstood,

In order to accomplish this the researchers used partially digested DNA fragments from a
Doberman pinscher to create a large insert bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) canine
genomic library. PCR testing, chromosome walking, homology mapping, DNA sequencing, etc.,
was performed on the canine model and compared to a human model. Comparison of gene maps
for several affected and non affected animals allowed the sequence to be narrowed down into a
region likely to be involved with narcolepsy. The researchers were able to determine that
mutations in the hypocretin (orexin) receptor 2 gene (Hcrtr2) resulted in canine narcolepsy. On a
surface level, this article was first chosen because it was one of the most frequently cited articles
involving narcolepsy. However upon reading it, one can see why it has great significance. The
paper established that hypocretins play a major role as neurotransmitters in sleep. Further research
was conducted to see if Hcrtr2 played a similar role in humans and if targeting the gene could cure

Wide Sargasso Sea By Jhumpa Lahiri Essay
In the novel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys and the short story The Treatment of Bibi Haldar by
Jhumpa Lahiri, both stories manage to have many similarities. Jean Rhys and Jhumpa Lahiri write
about how both characters, Antoinette and Bibi Haldar, are unaccepted by their societies.
Antoinette and Bibi Haldar are misfits in their communities because they do not conform to cultural
norms, their communities and peers believe they have illnesses, and both come from dysfunctional
families. In Wide Sargasso Seaby Jean Rhysand the short story The Treatment of Bibi Haldar by
Jhumpa Lahiri, both authors use the characters stories, memories, and communities treatment to
argue that they were outcasts because of the patriarchal society they live in. In Wide Sargasso Sea,
the main character is Antoinette Cosway. She is a young Creole woman who comes from a
dysfunctional family. Her father, Alexander Cosway, dies before his character could be
introduced. He was a former slave owner who had a plantation, Coulibri Estate, and was very
wealthy. His name was tainted because his fondness of alcohol and he recklessly spent his money.
People visited her father, Alexander Cosway, when he was alive, but not her or her mother,
Annette. Antoinette asked her mother why so few people came to see [them,] she told [Antoinette]
that the road from Spanish Town to Coulibri Estate where [they] lived was very bad and that road
repairing was now a thing of the past (Rhys 15). In that quote,

Post Disaster Planning and Development for NGOs and...
Humanitarian and non governmental (NGOs) organizations play a very important role in post
disaster planning and development because government cannot address everything, everywhere. In
fact, in many parts of the world the sitting government may not even be capable of addressing the
basic day to day needs of its population, pre disaster. Traditionally, NGOs and humanitarian
organizational tackle issues such as human rights, advocacy, humanitarian aid, hunger, extreme
poverty, education, housing and vocational training. Now these organizations are responding to
disasters and working in the areas of reconstruction, risk reduction, mitigation and disaster
preparedness.
NGOs and humanitarian organizational structures are flexible. Organizational size, staff and
volunteer workforce can quickly expand or contract to accommodate the mission at hand. This
enables service delivery at a much lower cost than most governments, private sector and multi
lateral agencies can provide. NGOs and humanitarian organizations work at the grassroots level so
while government may have the primary role of planning and managing all aspects of the disaster
NGOs and humanitarian organizational can supplement these initiatives by helping people
understand their rights and focusing on specific issues that assist vulnerable populations. This
bottom up community based approached can accelerate the whole community s recovery post
disaster.
In instances where the government cannot support disaster

Fractured Fairy Tale
With his eyes closed and his arm gripping Dumbledore as tightly as he could, Harry stepped into
that felling of compression. Then, instantly, they were there, at the top of the astronomy tower.
Harry helped Dumbledore over to the small steps. Dumbledore laid there, too weak to stand. You re
hurt, Harry said, I will go get Madam Pomfrey. She will be able to help. No. Severus, Dumbledore
said clearly, Bring me Severus... Harry went to fulfill Dumbledore s orders when there was a noise
from below, as if someone was coming.
Hide yourself below, Harry, commanded Dumbledore, Don t speak or be seen by anyone without

Good evening, Bellatrix, said Dumbledore with a grim grin on his face, I believe introduction is in

Oh, there s no time for that, Albus.
Snape was slowly making his way up the stairs. He was preparing himself for what was about to
happen. What are you waiting for, Bellatrix said to Draco, Kill him...now.
No, Snape said as he came up behind the Death Eaters. Dumbledore nodded as if giving him
some sort of signal. With two casts of the wand, they both shot green bolts at each of the Death
Eaters killing them instantly. Harry stood there in shock at what he just saw. The spell they
casted was Avada Cadavra, the killing curse. This spell was forbidden and only used by servants
of the Dark Lord to kill someone instantly. Why would Dumbledore and Snape use such a spell,
Harry asked himself.
Draco laid there, his eyes filled with fear of what just happened. Draco Malfoy, said Dumbledore,
were you really foolish enough to believe that you could kill me? There was a silence in the room.
That doesn t matter. You betrayed me and now you will die.
No, please, begged Draco, I will do anything you ask. Just, please, don t kill me.

A Crumbling Nation Essay
For those who do not know much about the Soviet Union, or those intrigued by the almighty
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the history of the collapse of the Soviet Union is
extremely well documented in Stephen Kotkin s Armageddon Averted: The Soviet Collapse 1970
2000. This relatively short book provides great insight into the downfall of the Soviet Union, as well
as to how it could potentially have sustained longer than it did by the Soviet elite. A dramatic
shift occurred in the Soviet Union between 1970 and 2000; numerous events and modifications
occurred to pave the way for a long and slow decay, as opposed to a rapid and fervent eruption of a
crumble that many may have expected. Kotkin provides the readers with a... Show more content on

He incorporates various accounts by numerous insiders and senior dignitaries, along with notable
failures by political figures, to elucidate the factors that led to the failure of both Communism and
the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Kotkin commences by discussing the Arab Israeli War of 1973, as it is a major turning point for
the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet Union. During this time, the Arabs and the Israelis
went to war; because of this, an oil embargo was put forth and prices skyrocketed. Many
countries and nations around the world were struggling to make do on little to no oil, including
the two world superpowers. Tough times were had by all during this time during the Brezhnev
era; many resorted to working in and with the black market in order to make ends meet. As
thousands were losing jobs and sinking more and more into financial woes, the Soviets struck oil
in Siberia. A quick shift took place, putting the Soviet Union as the main oil exporter. The strike of
oil led to an abundance of wealth from their

Market Structure of the Carbonated Drinks Industry
The carbonated drink industry is a very extensive worldwide and has also encouraged an increase
in similar industries such as the packaging field that handles the production of cans, glass, and
plastic bottles for example, and at the same time is generating significant revenue for additional
service industries like advertising. The carbonated drink industry consists of the raw material
retailers and providers. Most of the time, the larger beverage firms have leading positions in the ...

When launching into this industry the new product needs to be admired by consumers, retailers
and wholesalers. The advertising campaign must be able to convince merchants and retailers to
stock the new brand. With the existence of Coca Cola, Pepsi and Cadbury Schweppes the new
brand will have to compete for shelf space. These top competitors have already established a
strong image in the customer s mind. Merchants or retailers will acquire many risks in dedicating
shelf space to the new brand. Therefore, the new brand or product must be able to provide
compensation for space.
Price elasticity of demand
Elasticity plays an important part when carbonated soft drink when companies are trying to
determine how to price its product, and order attributes. These companies will need to understand
how quantity responds to a change in price in order to achieve their revenue and margin goals.
This research can be collected from customers, products, and competition. With more decisions
that consumers can pick from, pricing will have a larger effect on the quantity demanded by the
consumer. A large array of satisfactory substitutes that consumers can choose from such as Coca
Cola, Pepsi, Ritz and Publix brand cola. Moreover, this makes the carbonated soft drink a high
demand elastic commodity. If there would only be once choice that consumers could buy from (for

migrate down faster due to the positive electrode. The LDH isozymes also have different
isoelectric points (pI) , giving a different net charge, therefore affects its migration rate. Two
standards are placed into the agarose gel for comparison next to our own sample.
Conclusions:
In our purification table, the purification that gave us the biggest increase in purity was the 65% cut
pellet. The 65% cut pellet had the lowest percent yield, 5.15%, determined by dividing its total
protein to the clarified homogenate (first step of purification). The 65% cut also had the highest

The 65% cut pellet also had the highest recovery of LDH because of the total activity units,
869.132 U. The lowest recovery of LDH was affinity purified LDH with the total activity units of
578.778 U and with a specific activity of 0.504 U/mg.
Some unexpected results may have resulted in human error when determining absorbance versus
time. When using the GENESYS spectrophotometer, our group did not keep the proteins in the ice
buckets for a good amount of time, which may have resulted in different decay rates for the
different purification steps.
If we have down SDS Page, the purification could have show proteins based purely on molecular
weight, because the charges would be neutralizes. SDS Page is also known under denaturing
conditions because it makes sure that even proteins with different conformations do not migrate
through the gel any faster than a different protein. The higher molecular weight would migrate to
the bottom more quickly than a lower molecular weight protein. SDS Page could have shown the
general molecular weights in the bands of LDH.

The Role Of Music In Ancient Civilizations
Regardless of where they are located, almost all ancient civilizations share basic features. For
example, most civilizations develop things such as a class system, a common religion, or a system
of writing. Another mark of a successful civilization is the evolution of music. Since music is not
essential to survival, its development is usually within a large established society. The purpose of
musicvaries from civilization to civilization, era to era. In some cultures, music accompanied
religious rituals, as one sees in Ancient Egyptand Mesopotamia. In others, such as Ancient Greece,
music was a part of education and entertainment. Music also played a very important role in
keeping legends and records of history alive through oral tradition. The way it was produced ranged
from monophonic vocalizations in its earliest history to complex instruments and systems later in
time. Any way it was produced, the role music played was one of the most important in ancient
societies.
The earliest sign of music was discovered in architectural sites of Mesopotamia. Some of the main
evidence that music was an important part of Ancient Mesopotamian society was writing about it
found on ancient stone tablets. So far, ten tablets with writings concerning musical scales have been
found in sites around Ur and other ancient cities such as Nippur. They contain information about the
musical scales used in Ancient Mesopotamian music, revealing that there were seven different and
interrelated scales

The Nuclear Family Replaced the Extended Family After Industrialisation
Talcott Parsons believed that the nuclear family developed mainly as a result of industrialisation.
He thought that before the industry took over the functions of the family, the families were
extended units of production. This means that the work and home lives were combined and so each
family member taught another one skill for life such as education. Parsons says that the extended
family stayed together so they could provide health care for one another and look after the old
people whilst the old people looked after the young children whilst the parents were out working.
They also pursued justice on behalf of one another; if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the first stage, the Pre Industrial family was extended and they all lived and worked together. In
the second stage, the Early Industrial family were extended families beginning to become
geographically mobile, dying out and becoming less common. In the third stage, the Symmetrical
family was the beginning of the nuclear family, where they had split up from extended family into
father, mother, and two children.
However, there are criticisms to the functionalist view that the industrial revolution brought
about the nuclear family. Peter Laslett was a social historian who believed that pre and post
industrial families were mostly nuclear. He studied Northern Europe and found that families
were not likely to consist of a nuclear family structure, but he also found that the average size of
families in Western Europe stayed constant at 4.75 persons, which gives us reason to believe that
nuclear families were around before the industrial revolution. Laslett therefore does not agree with
Parsons or Willmott and Young, as he believes families were already nuclear pre industry and still
are today.

Michael Anderson was also a social historian who agreed with Parsons because he believed that the
pre industrial families were mainly extended. He argued that the extended family was a

Isolation In Catcher In The Rye
Salinger explores the theme of isolation in Catcher in the Rye. First, on pg 2 Salinger narrates
Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game. I remember around three o clock that
afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill. You could see the whole field
from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. You could
hear them all yelling. Holden is isolated, aloof, and watching people instead of connecting with
them. Next, on pg 153 Holden claims When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to
the hat check room, I was crying and all. I don t know why, but I was. I guess it was because I
was feeling so damn depressed and lonesome . Then, when I went out to the checkroom the hat

First, I think the Rye Field is a major symbol in this novel because pg 173, Holden told Phoebe
about what he is picturing and Holden said I m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I
have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff I mean if they re running
and they don t look where they re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them.
That s all I d do all day. I d just be the catcher in the rye and all. The quote is saying that Holden
doesn t want himself and everyone who entered the adulthood so he is catching everyone who
wants to act like an adult but Holden won t let them act like an adults. I think that Holden is a
little brat. He wants to act like he is a little kid and doesn t want to grow up as an adult. He thinks
that he isn t responsible enough to be treated as an adult because Holden deals with alcohol, sex,
and violence. I think maybe that s the reason he isn t responsible enough to take care of himself.
Even though he is a kid, he thinks that he can get away with everything when he is treated as a kid

  • 2. Racism, Sexism, And Classism Merlyn Manoj April 13, 2016 Period 2 Kale Then and Now: Changes of Racism, Sexism, and Classism In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout, the protagonists in the book, experience and learn about the problems of racism, sexism, and classism when their father, Atticus, agrees to defend Tom Robinson, an African American , in a trial. Set in the 1930s, most people were treated unfairly because of their race, gender, or social class. Even though problems about race, gender, and class decreased over time, these problems are still very prevalent today. Even though racism decreased dramatically over the past decades, there are still problems today that are strikingly similar to the problems in To Kill A Mockingbird. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains to Jem and Scout about the unfairness of court: when it s a white man s word against a black man s, the white man always wins. They re ugly, but those are the facts of life (Lee 220). Even though this was set in the 1930 s, juries from court still have a racial bias to this day. In fact, from the Sentencing Project, an organization that advocates change in sentencing policy and advocating alternatives to incarceration, it has been shown that African Americans are six times more likely to be incarcerated than white males... if current trends continue, one of every three black Americans can expect to go to prison in his lifetime (Sentencing Project 1). • 3. Drug Pros And Cons Essay There are also some pro and cons of drug testing. Although drugs are seen in a negative manner there are some advantages. Performance enhancements are also used to help recover from injuries quickly. Drugs can also help reduce anxiety, pain, and stress. Drugs are known to have more of a negative effect on health than positive (Jost, Kenneth 24). Although, they are known to have a short term enhancement they, cause impotence, worsening acne, balding and steroid rage. (Jost, Kenneth 26). Another con of drug use is creating an unfair advantage. Performance enhancements do not create a level playing field but rather a competitive advantage. The use of drugs can also create health problems and death. Once addicted it may be hard to become sober. The use of steroids can create liver abnormalities, altered appearances, and psychiatric illnesses(Wong, Glenn 50). Finally, the use of drugs can create legal penalties and expenses. A major case in the professional sport industry that has a huge influence on anti doping are the following is BALCO.BALCO is a scandal that involves the use of performance enhancements. Barry Bondsa former Major League Baseballplayer was found to be in a scandal with his former trainer Greg Anderson. Because Anderson was found guilty of giving athletes steroids this led to the speculation of Bonds using drugs. His defense was that the drugs were used for arthritis and dietary needs. • 4. The Affordable Care Act And Emergency Medical Services The Affordable Care Act and Emergency Medical Services Each year in the United States approximately 114 million people visit their local Emergency Department (ED), and 16 million of these patients arrive by Emergency Medical Services (EMS). (Board et al.) Health care in America has moved from an individual, fee for service health care system, towards a more integrated healthcare system i.e., The Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is a government controlled healthcare system, and is set up to be a value based payment system. The ACA will expand and transform the roles of EMS within the healthcare system. EMS s ability to survive and thrive in this new era of healthcare, will revolve, in part, on its ability to articulate its value to healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, hospital systems, and payers, as well as patients and family members. (Smith) EMS can thrive in the future, if it embraces change. John F. Kennedy had this to say about change, Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. (BrainyQuote) In order for EMS to thrive in the changes that the future is bringing, it must: focus on mobile integrated healthcare, be data driven in their clinical practices. There are three other areas that will be discussed at length, EMS agencies should be actively pursuing a community paramedicine program, EMS using remote telemedicine and EMS moving towards a value based payment system. • 6. The SUmmer of a Jupiter Symphony Essay The Summer of a Jupiter Symphony The year is 1788 as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began to work on his last three symphonies during a time of strife for musicians as the Austro Turkish War continues to war on in Austria. Tired from moving his family from central Vienna to the suburbs of Alsergrund all while in debt to his ears as he continued to borrow money from friends including a fellow mason, Michael Puchberg, Mozart finished his final symphony on August 10, 1788. This piece, nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony, coined by impresario Johann Peter Saloman, was Mozart s longest symphony with a total of four movements, a typical symphonic form during the Classical era. The Jupiter Symphony totals to about forty five minutes of music ending... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mozart was known for having an ear that would make any musician envious. From a young age he was able to listen to any piece of music and his mind would interpret all of that data with ease. While in Rome, he listened to a performance of Gregorio Allegri s Miserere only twice at the Sistine Chapel and was able to write it down for memory when he got home (Abert 135). After Mozart and his father returned to Italy from a ten year tour, Mozart was employed by Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Collero to be a court musician in the year 1773. With a pay check of only 150 florins a year though, Mozart began to look for other job ventures and began to try to write operas that he hoped would help kick start his career as a professional musician. It was not until 1782 when Mozart began to receive the credit that he deserved. Performing on multiple local keyboard competitions, he was soon established as one of the best keyboard players in Vienna. Finally in 1783, as he finished writing the opera Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, he began to be seen as a successful independent composer and started to receive a reputation as such (Abert 642). As Mozart got older, he matured even more as a composer writing a total of over six hundred pieces including symphonies, operas, concertos, and other styles of pieces during his life ... Comparison Of Evidence And Pattern Evidence Comparison of latent fingerprints found at the crime scene with exemplar prints, comparison of bite marks on a victim, DNA evidence, hair and fibre matching are some of the example of pattern comparison in forensic science (Coyle, Field Wenderoth, 2009). Comparison of pattern evidence in forensic science is to determine whether the same kind of the properties of forensic traces may have come from a common (or related source) (Found Edmond, 2012). There are varieties of techniques in forensic pattern evidencethat make associations between physical traces. The association of one or more traces might be helpful in the investigation of a crime that usually can support an inference (Cole, Berthental Seelagy, 2016). Pattern evidence is any item where a mark or impression has been made during criminal activity with the purpose of associating the mark with the object or implement that made it. • 9. The Meaning Of Life In Thornton Wilder s Our Town The diverse ways writers answer this question stems from their worldview. For the atheist Samuel Beckett, there was no meaning to life. He narrated a story of two babbling idiots who he believed were foolish to wait around for Godot. His pointless view of life manifests in the way he creates his characters: they are characters who do not go and do anything. In Our Town, Thornton Wilder stresses people looking at one another. He narrates Emily Webb s horror as she looks back on an ordinary day of her former life. Wilder wants to illustrate the beauty in a slow lifestyle. He wants to show that immense value lies in slowness. In The Grand Inquisitor, Dostoevsky narrates that the meaning of life as a life full of love. Towards the end of the book, Father Zossima states, What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love. In this story, Alyosha was not as good of a philosopher as Ivan. Furthermore, Alyosha was not as smart as Ivan. However, Alyosha had authority and fulfillment through love. He had fulfillment through the love of Christ. In The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis shows that the a meaningful life is one that is lived in surrender to God. Lewis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Vladimir and Estragon also show the natural human desire to hope in something greater than finite human knowledge and gain. This correlates to the Great Divorce where Lewis shows that meaning and fulfillment can only come from repenting and living in surrender to God almighty. • 12. Public Opinion Polls Have Both Flaws And Encouraging Data Before I go into answering the questions directly, it should be understood that public opinion polls have both flaws and encouraging data. Pubic opinion polls if done appropriately will give the general feel of how the population is feeling towards an issue. It all depends on whether the sampling is comparative to the population, for example if you have a population of One Hundred Thousand and you only sample one hundred, the results will not be as accurate if the sampling size was bigger. Also, the person conducting the interviews of these opinion polls must not be biased to one side or the other. They must remain centered on the subject and not influence the answers that are given. Asking specific questions about real issues can result is promising polling data. Opinion polls should be used to collect data, and must also be used in a way that reflects accurate data. By not having accurate data that can lead to bad decision making or lead to mistrust among the community and the police departments. One of the biggest missuses of opinion polls was in the presidential election in the 1948 were the Chicago Daily Tribune printed election results on bad opinion polling and looked foolish for doing so. So these polls should be used with caution and constructed in a way that does not allow for misrepresentation of the publics true views as it has in the past. A law of nature is a general rule that is come to by reason and common sense. Unlike a civil law, the laws of nature don t have to be written down. These laws are just put into place by basic human reason. The laws of nature are thought of when talking about the state of nature. Both Hobbes and Locke discuss the state of nature, but see it in different ways, resulting in different laws of nature per the two philosophers. Hobbes accounts of the laws of nature affect his overall political philosophy by making him see the state of nature as an unforgiving place of war and that men should do everything possible to escape it. Summary Of The Room And Waiting For Godot Laurin Neely Professor Matthew Byrge English 2030 14 22 September 2015 Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter Absurd Influences in Theatre There are a wide variety of theatrical movements that have occurred over time. One of these includes the theatre of the absurd. Theater of the absurd refers to the literary movement in drama popular throughout European countries from the 1940s to approximately 1989. A definition of the term absurdism is referred to a literary and philosophical movement that flourished after the Second World War and bears a close relationship to Existentialism. Absurdism s signature attitude is therefore black humor, an ambiguous mixture of tragic pathos and preposterous comedy, which finds it compelling literary expression in the work of authors such as Samuel Beckett ( Absurdism 3). In this paper, I will explore the development of absurdism in two different plays, The Room and Waiting for Godot. The absurdist type of plays often seek to explore the spiritual loneliness, isolation, and anxiety of the down and outs of society. Theater of the Absurd are often pointless and contain no underlying messages. They have been described as moving in a circle with no true plot. The movement of the absurd commonly refers to the work of a group of dramatists who first emerged during and after World War II. I have choose to pick a play from Samuel Beckett as well as Harold Pinter to observe their influence on the movement of absurd theatre. Absurdist works often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Bladder Cancer Research Paper Bladder Cancer The bladder is a hollow organ in the pelvis with muscular walls. Its main function is to store the urine. Urine is made by the kidneys. The ureters then carry the urine to the bladder. From there a long muscular tube called the urethra carries the urine from the bladder to the outside world. The bladder has several layers which are made up of different types of cells. Bladder cancer starts when the cells in the urinary bladderstart to grow uncontrollably. Most bladder cancers start in the deepest layer of the bladder which is called the urothelium. If the cancer grows onto the other layers of the bladder it then becomes more advanced and can be harder to treat. The cancer then may spread outside the bladder to the lymph nodes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Can bladder cancer be treated? Possibly, with these four treatment plans: surgery, intravesical therapy, chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy. Surgery is the most common type people use to get rid of bladder cancer. Two most common types of surgery people use are Transurethral surgery and a Cystectomy. Transurethral surgery is when tumors in the bladder are removed through the urethra. Cystectomy is when part or the entire bladder is removed. A partial cystectomy is when only the tumor is removed. Close by lymph nodes are also removed. This surgery allows the person to keep part of their bladder, but it will be smaller so they might have to go more often. The cancer might also come back in a different part of the bladder (2016 American Cancer Society, Inc). The second treatment for bladder cancer a person may use is a method called Intravesical therapy. Intravesical therapy is when the doctor puts a liquid drug into the bladder. By putting the drug into the bladder the cells inside the bladder will be killed and the cells everywhere else will have no effect. This type of therapy is used only for early stages of bladder cancer. The third type of treatment is Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is killing cancer cells by using drugs. Most chemotherapy drugs are either given by mouth or through a vein. When the drug enters the bloodstream it spreads through the body. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While nuclear weapons were certainly an advantage in warfare, not every situation is going to call for the use of a nuclear weapon. History has shown that even in the most recent of conflicts, militaries continue to rely on ground forces. Upon realizing his mistake of solely letting Regan and Goneril inherit his kingdom, Lear is ashamed that [his daughters have the] power to shake [his] manhood (I.iv.299 301). My goals for this class based on the Sensory and DiAngelo reading were to focus less on grades and more on understanding of the concepts, the second was to strive for intellectual humility by accepting what I do not know and being open to the concepts I do not know, my last goal was to learn from my reactions towards subject material the may have bothered me by journaling or researching more about the topic. (Sensory DiAngelo, 2012) These goals I set for the class were met at times, but at other times I feel that I did not meet these goals as well as I intended to. The first goal to focus less on grades was mostly met. I found myself not caring about the grades, but then when I had trouble with a concept or I found myself taking longer to understand what was being asked of me in the homework assignment I began to feel like my mark would suffer or that I would get a really bad mark, and although I never got a very terrible mark, I did find myself focusing on it too much at times. I found it was easier to focus less on the grade at the beginning and at the end of the semester, so I just need to work on managing my stress in the middle of the semester to keep myself from nitpicking my grades. I did find that when I did have the time to write out notes for the readings or even just having notes in the margins it helped me understand and my grades then reflected that, so for the future I will have to remember to keep that in mind. Humanitarian and non governmental (NGOs) organizations play a very important role in post disaster planning and development because government cannot address everything, everywhere. In fact, in many parts of the world the sitting government may not even be capable of addressing the basic day to day needs of its population, pre disaster. Traditionally, NGOs and humanitarian organizational tackle issues such as human rights, advocacy, humanitarian aid, hunger, extreme poverty, education, housing and vocational training. Now these organizations are responding to disasters and working in the areas of reconstruction, risk reduction, mitigation and disaster preparedness. NGOs and humanitarian organizational structures are flexible. Organizational size, staff and volunteer workforce can quickly expand or contract to accommodate the mission at hand. This enables service delivery at a much lower cost than most governments, private sector and multi lateral agencies can provide. NGOs and humanitarian organizations work at the grassroots level so while government may have the primary role of planning and managing all aspects of the disaster NGOs and humanitarian organizational can supplement these initiatives by helping people understand their rights and focusing on specific issues that assist vulnerable populations. For example, most civilizations develop things such as a class system, a common religion, or a system of writing. Another mark of a successful civilization is the evolution of music. Since music is not essential to survival, its development is usually within a large established society. The purpose of musicvaries from civilization to civilization, era to era. In some cultures, music accompanied religious rituals, as one sees in Ancient Egyptand Mesopotamia. In others, such as Ancient Greece, music was a part of education and entertainment. Music also played a very important role in keeping legends and records of history alive through oral tradition. • 51. The Nuclear Family Replaced the Extended Family After... The Nuclear Family Replaced the Extended Family After Industrialisation Talcott Parsons believed that the nuclear family developed mainly as a result of industrialisation. He thought that before the industry took over the functions of the family, the families were extended units of production. This means that the work and home lives were combined and so each family member taught another one skill for life such as education. Parsons says that the extended family stayed together so they could provide health care for one another and look after the old people whilst the old people looked after the young children whilst the parents were out working. They also pursued justice on behalf of one another; if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the first stage, the Pre Industrial family was extended and they all lived and worked together. In the second stage, the Early Industrial family were extended families beginning to become geographically mobile, dying out and becoming less common. In the third stage, the Symmetrical family was the beginning of the nuclear family, where they had split up from extended family into father, mother, and two children. However, there are criticisms to the functionalist view that the industrial revolution brought about the nuclear family. Peter Laslett was a social historian who believed that pre and post industrial families were mostly nuclear. He studied Northern Europe and found that families were not likely to consist of a nuclear family structure, but he also found that the average size of families in Western Europe stayed constant at 4.75 persons, which gives us reason to believe that nuclear families were around before the industrial revolution. Laslett therefore does not agree with Parsons or Willmott and Young, as he believes families were already nuclear pre industry and still are today. ===================================================================== Michael Anderson was also a social historian who agreed with Parsons because he believed that the pre industrial families were mainly extended. • 52. Isolation In Catcher In The Rye Salinger explores the theme of isolation in Catcher in the Rye. First, on pg 2 Salinger narrates Anyway, it was the Saturday of the football game. I remember around three o clock that afternoon I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill. You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place. You could hear them all yelling. Holden is isolated, aloof, and watching people instead of connecting with them. Next, on pg 153 Holden claims When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to the hat check room, I was crying and all. I don t know why, but I was. I guess it was because I was feeling so damn depressed and lonesome . Then, when I went out to the checkroom the hat check girl was very nice.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, I think the Rye Field is a major symbol in this novel because pg 173, Holden told Phoebe about what he is picturing and Holden said I m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff I mean if they re running and they don t look where they re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That s all I d do all day. I d just be the catcher in the rye and all. The quote is saying that Holden doesn t want himself and everyone who entered the adulthood so he is catching everyone who wants to act like an adult but Holden won t let them act like an adults. I think that Holden is a little brat. He wants to act like he is a little kid and doesn t want to grow up as an adult. He thinks that he isn t responsible enough to be treated as an adult because Holden deals with alcohol, sex, and violence. I think maybe that s the reason he isn t responsible enough to take care of himself. Even though he is a kid, he thinks that he can get away with everything when he is treated as a kid more than an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not one, but two major drops occurred that showed the same signs of the 2007 2008 bear market that led to the Great Recession. I lost money trying to trade the waves as the price action continued to be choppy like a great sea storm. I didn t know that I was bleeding money as the coins where falling out of my pocket from transaction fees due to my stop loss orders being triggered, a method I called the seat belt when a secerity starts to go the wrong way. The biggest stressor was a when the earnings season occured and I had been following the fall of retail (brick and morter). Companies where continuing to report horrible earning reports. I placed a virtual trade on one of the retailers and I was right. The payout was huge. I felt that the trend was across the industry, so I found the next retailer within the same subsector, clothing, as it was another mild winter, and they company sold winter clothing for the season just like the previous trade. This time with real money. There were a surprise earnings. The company beat expectations by a long shot. I knew in my mind that this was not correct. But I had lost couple thousand dollars just on that one trade. I had just felt a significant financial change. I watched my account drop nearly ten grand over the course of 2015. I didn t have that much to play with, but the chopping market ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
