Hair Colouring
• The art of colouring hair is not much
different from any other colouring.
• The colour wheel/star helps us as
colourists understand how colours
can work together and how to
neutralise unwanted tones
• How do we know which colours
neutralise each other on the colour
wheel??
Colouring Tones
0- Base
1- Ash
2- Cool Ash
3- Gold
4- Red
5- Mahogany
6- Violet
7- Brunette
8-Pearl
9- Soft Ash
• =Clear
• =Grey
• =Green
• =Yellow
• =Orange
• =Purple & Red
• =Purple
• =Mixture of all
• =Blue Ash
• =Grey & Purple
Are You Cool or Warm?
• When we consult with
our clients on colour it is
important to determine
which of these categories
the client is: Warm or
Cool?
• We can discover this by
looking at skin tone, eye
colour and asking about
colours of clothing worn
and shades worn in
makeup and nail polish.
See if you can name these colours
are they warm or cool?
Are these Blondes warm or cool?
WARM TONES
GOLD = 3
RED = 4
MAHOGONY = 5
BRUNETTE = 7
COOL TONES
1 = ASH
2 = COOL ASH
6 = VIOLET
8 = PEARL
9= SOFT ASH
Hair Colouring
• USING VISUAL
AIDS
• Shade charts allow us to see
the shades available in each
range
• Style books allow us to see
the colours clients would
like
• Let the client see staff
members hair to see if they
like the colour
Hair Colouring
The consultation
• Ask Questions, use visual aids
• Look at what you have to work with
• Look back at any history eg:Record cards
• Test the hair
• Feel the condition/porosity
A FEW BASIC RULES:
• 1. Consult a colour wheel.  Hair is science and colour
science is based on the colour wheel.  For example
the opposite of orange is blue, etc.
• 2. Consult a hair colour chart.  Black through to Pale
Blonde
• 3. You can only alter hair colour by: a) depositing
colour (darkening), or b) lifting colour (lightening).
Colour star
5. As we have seen all artificial colours are created with
three primary colours, yellow, red and blue.
These colour molecules have different molecular weight.
• Yellow is the smallest and penetrates the hair shaft
the deepest and is the most difficult to get out.
• Next is red.
•Blue is the largest molecule so it will be the last to
adhere to the hair shaft and will be the first to fall off.
This is why hair more often than not turns orange with
lots of yellow, a little red, hardly any blue.
