2. The term bilingualism always refers to the mother
tongue and another.
The domain of both has different levels in bilinguals:
• Level 1: Speaking two languages (fixed element).
• Level 2: Understand, speak, read and write two languages (variable component).
• Level 3: Think two languages (variable component).
Few people get to level 3 bilingual or all items 2.
3. To recognize bilingualism classes we consider
two different elements:
Individual
bilingualism
Social
bilingualism
4. The one that takes into account the person. Due to the diversity of
situations, bilingualism adopted different names:
a. According to the relationship between language and thought: Composed or
Coordinated.
b. Depending on the degree of knowledge of the language: Dominant or
Balanced.
c. Depending on the age of acquisition: Simultaneous bilingualism or
Consecutive bilingualism.
d. According to the social category of languages : Additive bilingualism or
Subtractive bilingualism.
e. According to cultural identity : bilingual bicultural or monocultural
bilingualism.
