Reflective Essay Assignment #1
Hillbilly Elegy & Between the World and Me
Due Date Sunday, March 4, 2018 by 11:59 pm on Canvas
Points 20 points
In Hillbilly Elegy and Between the World and Me, the authors
discuss their own lives and the
problems they see in America today. Both authors discuss how
the American Dream is no
longer an achievable goal for many of the people around them.
However, they are writing from
two very different perspectives and this difference in
perspective radically affects the tone and
purpose of the books. One writes to educate outsiders on what is
happening to the culture of
those who are white and poor. The other writes to educate and
strengthen his son in the
knowledge that living in America will always be a struggle, and
as he does this he educates
Americans on the reality of being a black man in America
today. Reflecting on these books how
has your perspective on this American life affected?
In this essay, you are to address all of the following questions:
1. Describe J.D. Vance’s conception of the American Dream.
Does he see himself as
someone that has achieved “the Dream”? What prevents others
in his family and in his
town from realizing that same dream and what does he think
needs to change in order for
more of these people to realize that dream?
2. What is Coates’ description of “the Dream”? Who is able to
experience the Dream?
What prevents Coates and his loved ones from realizing that
same Dream?
3. How does Coates’ and Vance’s conception of the American
Dream differ? Why? Do you
think the changes that Vance suggests need to occur in his
community to allow more
people to realize the dream would resonate with Coates and his
loved ones? Why or why
not?

1) Introduction
Entrepreneurship development is basically a combination of
skill and art which an individual will have to develop. All the
famous personalities who are now the leading entrepreneurs
across the world once started their career by analysing their
own skills and development. The attributes that are connected
towards the individual development includes communication,
critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, curiosity, self-
regulation and also the entrepreneurship skills (Kumar, 2015).
All the firms in today’s competitive environment expects an
individual to be creative, dynamic, innovative, leadership
ability and also the strategic skills that are required. The
modern economy defines the role of an individual which will
take the organisation to the next level and also will help in
developing the entrepreneurial skills that an individual can
develop (Stel, 2014).
The real time analysis was carried out in the study using two
tools which is basically the GET and AULIVE and based on the
results self-analysis is carried out. 2) Critical evaluation2.1
GET 2 results and interpretation
The Get2results will help in determining the areas and the
ability that I have to become an entrepreneur. It is important to
analyse the skills that I possess and also in working on the areas
that needs improvement. The attributes that are getting assessed
includes creativity, autonomy, risk taking ability, control and
also the need for achievement. The tool is available in
www.GET2TEST.net and the analysis is based on 54 closed
ended questions with two options. On an overall I had achieved
69% which determines that I am occasionally enterprising and it
is an important characteristic for an entrepreneur.
The results
The result shows that I had the strengths of being an
entrepreneur and has 69% which portraits the enterprising
ability that I possess. The Management Trainee experience that
I have with Bank Nizwa which is the first Islamic bank helped
me in developing the basic skills that are required. This helped
me in innovating new things where the operational standards
can be improved across Bank Nizwa.
Figure 1: Overall results – Get2Test
Source: (get2test, 2017)
Bank Nizwa had provided me lot of opportunities through which
the skills, attributes and also capabilities that are required to be
an entrepreneur.
Figure 2: Test result summary
Source: (get2test, 2017)
There are few areas like the need for achievement that needs to
be improved by doing few exercises which requires a lot of
efforts from my side other than what Bank Nizwa thought me
towards entrepreneurship (get2test, 2017).
Need for achievement
The result is very clear that I will have to put more efforts
towards improving the ability to achieve something big. This
gave me a heads-up that I will have to improve in this area a lot
and especially towards task focus, proper time management and
also in setting realistic goals that can be achieved. I had scored
50% which still needs to be improved (get2test, 2017).
Figure 3: Need for achievement
Source: (get2test, 2017)
Need for autonomy
The need for autonomy result implies that I am independent and
even in terms of carrying out important tasks at Bank Nizwa I
was individualistic and independent as well (get2test, 2017).
With the score shows that I secured over 67% in this attribute
but I love working as a team and also will be contributing my
individual part as well.
Figure 4: Need for autonomy
Source: (get2test, 2017)
Creative tendency
The creativity score shows that I am creative after securing 67%
but it is something that needs to be improved. The creative that
I possess is above average but needs to be improved by doing
creative things on technology, critical process and also through
innovative working ideas (Santarelli, 2013).
Figure 5: Creative tendency
Source: (get2test, 2017)
Calculated risk taking
I personally feel that greater the risk greater would be the
rewards and it is an important attribute for an entrepreneur. It is
always better to predict the future and based on which
calculated risk needs to be taken and it remains my approach as
well towards risk which is getting described through 67%.
Figure 6: Calculated risk taking
Source: (get2test, 2017)
Locus of control
This is one of the high scored areas and I firmly believe that
this is an essential character for an entrepreneur. With the score
of 92% it automatically explains that I am a person with strong
self-belief who proactively work on things and also the one with
high self-confidence.
Figure 7: Locus of control

Figure 8: Individual attribute score
Source: (get2test, 2017)3) Supporting and contradicting
evidence for the results 3.1 Evaluation of results with AULIVE
The overall score out of the psychometric assessment through
AULIVE is 70.13 which describes that I possess a medium skill
range to be an entrepreneur.
Figure 9: AULIVE test score
Source: (Aulive, 2017)
Abstraction
Abstraction shows the ability of doing things which is normal as
per the score.
Connection
I can connect to things easily which is one of the important
aspects towards the creativity.
Perspective
When I analyse on the perspective it is very clear that there is a
space, time and people (Aulive, 2017).
Curiosity
I am very curious towards learning new areas that will give a
sense of bringing new things.
Paradox
It is very clear that I can work under the contradictory
statements.
Complexity
I have the capability of analysing the larger information and
also in maintaining that information.
Persistence
I analyse things and then the right decision will be made
accordingly. The decision will take the usual time and also will
yield a stronger result (Aulive, 2017). 3.2 Work-life example
for entrepreneurship skill
The real time experience as a Management trainee in Bank
Nizwa helped in analysing the skills that I possess. These skills
by default are required for any individual who wanted to
become an entrepreneur. I have a positive way of developing the
entrepreneurship development and especially the skills that are
required. Bank Nizwa helped me in developing the skills which
includes personal, interpersonal skills, communication,
leadership, self-knowledge, energy and innovation (Burns,
2014). This helped me to understand the ability that I possess
and also in applying those in the real time situation. 4) Analysis
of Antecedent influencers
The real time experience which I had with Bank Nizwa helped
me in developing the required skills.
Education
The basic education that I possess had helped me in analysing
the areas and also will serve as a platform to be an entrepreneur.
Family
The collaborative family environment where I live with a larger
family helped me to understand different opinions of the
members (Aulive, 2017).
Experience
Being the first Islamic bank in Oman the workplace provided
me the experiences which are required to be an entrepreneur. 5)
Reflection, conclusions and implications5.1 Reflections and
Conclusions
Both Get2 and Aulive results are similar where the
entrepreneurship skills that I possess are average. This needs to
be improved and there are areas in which I will have to work
and that will help in making me a successful entrepreneur. I
have the abilities which are at an average level and the real time
experience helped me in improving the scores better. 5.2
Implications
There are areas in which the improvement needs to be made and
it gives me a sense of confidence that I will be a successful
entrepreneur in the near future. Innovation is one area that
needs to be improved drastically for which analysing cases,
reading books, real time situation tests and also in improving
the technical skills.

  • 1. College of Social & Behavioral Science LEAP 1100-006 Spring 2018 Reflective Essay Assignment #1 Hillbilly Elegy & Between the World and Me Due Date Sunday, March 4, 2018 by 11:59 pm on Canvas Points 20 points In Hillbilly Elegy and Between the World and Me, the authors discuss their own lives and the problems they see in America today. Both authors discuss how the American Dream is no longer an achievable goal for many of the people around them. However, they are writing from two very different perspectives and this difference in perspective radically affects the tone and purpose of the books. One writes to educate outsiders on what is happening to the culture of those who are white and poor. The other writes to educate and strengthen his son in the knowledge that living in America will always be a struggle, and as he does this he educates Americans on the reality of being a black man in America today. Reflecting on these books how has your perspective on this American life affected? In this essay, you are to address all of the following questions: 1. Describe J.D. Vance’s conception of the American Dream.
  • 2. Does he see himself as someone that has achieved “the Dream”? What prevents others in his family and in his town from realizing that same dream and what does he think needs to change in order for more of these people to realize that dream? 2. What is Coates’ description of “the Dream”? Who is able to experience the Dream? What prevents Coates and his loved ones from realizing that same Dream? 3. How does Coates’ and Vance’s conception of the American Dream differ? Why? Do you think the changes that Vance suggests need to occur in his community to allow more people to realize the dream would resonate with Coates and his loved ones? Why or why not? Guidelines: -- Please review the grading rubric below before posting your essay on Canvas. -- Your essay is to • Include your name at the top of the essay; • be three to five pages long; • be double-spaced, using 12 size font, standard margins; • include a title other than, “Reflective Essay #1”; and • be posted in pdf or Word format on Canvas by 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 4, 2018.
  • 3. Note: You should assume that the audience for your paper is someone who has NOT read the books. Therefore, it is essential that the examples you use be contextualized. However, your purpose is not to summarize the books, but rather to specifically address the questions above. • 6. 5.1 Reflections and Conclusions 8 5.2 Implications 8 Bibliography 9 Appendix 10 1) Introduction Entrepreneurship development is basically a combination of skill and art which an individual will have to develop. All the famous personalities who are now the leading entrepreneurs across the world once started their career by analysing their own skills and development. The attributes that are connected towards the individual development includes communication, critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, curiosity, self- regulation and also the entrepreneurship skills (Kumar, 2015). All the firms in today’s competitive environment expects an individual to be creative, dynamic, innovative, leadership ability and also the strategic skills that are required. The modern economy defines the role of an individual which will
  • 7. take the organisation to the next level and also will help in developing the entrepreneurial skills that an individual can develop (Stel, 2014). The real time analysis was carried out in the study using two tools which is basically the GET and AULIVE and based on the results self-analysis is carried out. 2) Critical evaluation2.1 GET 2 results and interpretation The Get2results will help in determining the areas and the ability that I have to become an entrepreneur. It is important to analyse the skills that I possess and also in working on the areas that needs improvement. The attributes that are getting assessed includes creativity, autonomy, risk taking ability, control and also the need for achievement. The tool is available in www.GET2TEST.net and the analysis is based on 54 closed ended questions with two options. On an overall I had achieved 69% which determines that I am occasionally enterprising and it is an important characteristic for an entrepreneur. The results The result shows that I had the strengths of being an entrepreneur and has 69% which portraits the enterprising ability that I possess. The Management Trainee experience that I have with Bank Nizwa which is the first Islamic bank helped me in developing the basic skills that are required. This helped me in innovating new things where the operational standards can be improved across Bank Nizwa. Figure 1: Overall results – Get2Test Source: (get2test, 2017) Bank Nizwa had provided me lot of opportunities through which the skills, attributes and also capabilities that are required to be an entrepreneur. Figure 2: Test result summary Source: (get2test, 2017) There are few areas like the need for achievement that needs to be improved by doing few exercises which requires a lot of
  • 8. efforts from my side other than what Bank Nizwa thought me towards entrepreneurship (get2test, 2017). Need for achievement The result is very clear that I will have to put more efforts towards improving the ability to achieve something big. This gave me a heads-up that I will have to improve in this area a lot and especially towards task focus, proper time management and also in setting realistic goals that can be achieved. I had scored 50% which still needs to be improved (get2test, 2017). Figure 3: Need for achievement Source: (get2test, 2017) Need for autonomy The need for autonomy result implies that I am independent and even in terms of carrying out important tasks at Bank Nizwa I was individualistic and independent as well (get2test, 2017). With the score shows that I secured over 67% in this attribute but I love working as a team and also will be contributing my individual part as well. Figure 4: Need for autonomy Source: (get2test, 2017) Creative tendency The creativity score shows that I am creative after securing 67% but it is something that needs to be improved. The creative that I possess is above average but needs to be improved by doing creative things on technology, critical process and also through innovative working ideas (Santarelli, 2013). Figure 5: Creative tendency Source: (get2test, 2017) Calculated risk taking I personally feel that greater the risk greater would be the rewards and it is an important attribute for an entrepreneur. It is always better to predict the future and based on which
  • 9. calculated risk needs to be taken and it remains my approach as well towards risk which is getting described through 67%. Figure 6: Calculated risk taking Source: (get2test, 2017) Locus of control This is one of the high scored areas and I firmly believe that this is an essential character for an entrepreneur. With the score of 92% it automatically explains that I am a person with strong self-belief who proactively work on things and also the one with high self-confidence. Figure 7: Locus of control Source: (get2test, 2017) Figure 8: Individual attribute score Source: (get2test, 2017)3) Supporting and contradicting evidence for the results 3.1 Evaluation of results with AULIVE The overall score out of the psychometric assessment through AULIVE is 70.13 which describes that I possess a medium skill range to be an entrepreneur. Figure 9: AULIVE test score Source: (Aulive, 2017) Abstraction Abstraction shows the ability of doing things which is normal as per the score. Connection I can connect to things easily which is one of the important aspects towards the creativity. Perspective When I analyse on the perspective it is very clear that there is a space, time and people (Aulive, 2017). Curiosity I am very curious towards learning new areas that will give a
  • 10. sense of bringing new things. Paradox It is very clear that I can work under the contradictory statements. Complexity I have the capability of analysing the larger information and also in maintaining that information. Persistence I analyse things and then the right decision will be made accordingly. The decision will take the usual time and also will yield a stronger result (Aulive, 2017). 3.2 Work-life example for entrepreneurship skill The real time experience as a Management trainee in Bank Nizwa helped in analysing the skills that I possess. These skills by default are required for any individual who wanted to become an entrepreneur. I have a positive way of developing the entrepreneurship development and especially the skills that are required. Bank Nizwa helped me in developing the skills which includes personal, interpersonal skills, communication, leadership, self-knowledge, energy and innovation (Burns, 2014). This helped me to understand the ability that I possess and also in applying those in the real time situation. 4) Analysis of Antecedent influencers The real time experience which I had with Bank Nizwa helped me in developing the required skills. Education The basic education that I possess had helped me in analysing the areas and also will serve as a platform to be an entrepreneur. Family The collaborative family environment where I live with a larger family helped me to understand different opinions of the members (Aulive, 2017). Experience Being the first Islamic bank in Oman the workplace provided me the experiences which are required to be an entrepreneur. 5)
  • 11. Reflection, conclusions and implications5.1 Reflections and Conclusions Both Get2 and Aulive results are similar where the entrepreneurship skills that I possess are average. This needs to be improved and there are areas in which I will have to work and that will help in making me a successful entrepreneur. I have the abilities which are at an average level and the real time experience helped me in improving the scores better. 5.2 Implications There are areas in which the improvement needs to be made and it gives me a sense of confidence that I will be a successful entrepreneur in the near future. Innovation is one area that needs to be improved drastically for which analysing cases, reading books, real time situation tests and also in improving the technical skills. Bibliography Aulive.
