BI Publisher was implemented to address performance and formatting issues in Financial Reporting for a Hyperion Planning environment with 17 dimensions, 2 cubes, 150 users, and large sparse budget reports containing hundreds of pages and rows/columns. Key problems solved by BI Publisher included optimizing MDX queries for better performance, joining multiple data sources, and providing more flexible formatting of reports. However, BI Publisher required additional skills, licensing costs, and lacked single sign-on with Planning. In production, it met most requirements while degrading less than Planning over time. BI Publisher is recommended if Financial Reporting cannot meet requirements and the organization is prepared for additional costs and resources needed.
