3. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
4. Masthead: The masthead is the
largest piece of writing on my front
cover. I have used a white font as it
will stand out against the pink
background colour. The masthead is
centred in the middle of the page
and is in a san serif font. I then went
to the ‘effect’ bar on Photoshop to
change the emboss feature and
make the text sharper.
Main Image: My main image is in
the centre of the page and is a
medium close-up shot. This takes up
most of the page and is the main
focus. It is also the largest image on
the magazine.
Cover Lines: The cover
lines on my front cover act
as a border for the main
image. They include
events that occur
throughout the magazine.
Main Cover line:
The main cover line is
the second largest text
on the page after the
masthead. This is used
to catch the readers
eye and draws them in
as it is interesting, also
the white font is eye-
catching.
Issue Number: I have included
the issue number on my front
cover as it would help the reader if
they decided to return the
magazine or if they picked up the
wrong issue.
Barcode: The barcode is on the front cover of the
magazine for buying purposes; it has to be there
otherwise the reader cannot buy the magazine. This is
also placed at the front of the magazine as there is
probably advertisements on the back page.
Date & Price: The date is
placed on the front cover of the
magazine so the consumers are
aware of when the magazine was
released.
Price: The price is essential to
the magazine because the
readers need to know how much
they will be purchasing the
magazine for.
Web Address: The web address
is always positioned on the front of
the magazine so the consumer
knows where to access any other
information about the magazine.
Positioning Statement: The
positioning statement is
important to the magazine
cover as it is introducing
what type of magazine it is.
5. HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA
TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
6. The main new media technology I used when
creating my media product was Photoshop. On
Photoshop I used various tools within the
program such as: the text tool to insert text on
to the cover, the magic wand cutter tool to cut
the background out of my main image. Also, I
used the crop tool as I had to crop certain parts
of an image.
Also, I used new technologies such as: slide
share and e-maze, so I was able to upload my
PowerPoints to my blog from these websites.
7. WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS AND
WEAKNESSES OF BOTH THE PRODUCT AND
YOUR USE OF NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES?
8. The strengths of my school magazine
front cover are that I included
everything that was needed. However,
there are some weaknesses. For
example: the barcode, web address,
price and date are on the left hand side
of the cover, when they should be in the
bottom right hand corner. Also, another
weakness would be that there is not
enough cover lines on the front cover
and also I need to include sublines.
When using Photoshop, my strengths
were definitely using the text tool,
inserting pictures and changing the
colours of fonts and the background.
However, one of my weaknesses when
using Photoshop was the cutting tool
and trying to get the image cut out
perfectly.
10. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
11. ‘Regular Contents’: I
included the text ‘contents’ at
the top of the page and this is
for a sense of verification, so
the audience understands what
they’re looking at. Also, it helps
the readers get to know where
all of the articles and
information is.
Images: The images on the
contents page are in medium
close-up shots. Also, in the
images, direct address is used
to connect with the reader.
Masthead (small version):
On the contents page a smaller
version of the masthead is
included; in a unique font. In this
case, this is the second largest
text on the page. The masthead
on the contents is there to
reinforce the magazine brands
identity and for continuity. This is
an in- house style and appeals
to the audience because of the
magazine’s ‘own signature’.
Page Numbers: Page
numbers are included as the
readers need to know where
certain articles are located in
the magazine.
Date: The date is included on the contents page so the
audience knows when it was published and if it is the
recent issue.
Columns: I have included
columns on my contents page
to break the information up in
to sections; this makes it easier
for the consumer to understand
the information. I have used
two columns. This makes the
page looks clean and tidy, also
engaging to the reader.
Cover lines: The cover lines
are used throughout the
contents page to describe
what will be included inside
of the magazine. These
create a frame for the
images.
12. HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA
TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
13. One of the new media technologies I
used while creating my media product
was Photoshop. To cut out the
background of my images I used the
magic cutting tool. Also, to insert text I
used the text tool.
14. Camera
To take photos for the front cover
and contents page I used a digital
camera. I took different types of
pictures from different angles,
such as: medium close-up.
15. WHAT ARE THE STRENGTHS AND
WEAKNESSES OF BOTH THE PRODUCT AND
YOUR USE OF NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES?
16. In my opinion, I have many strengths in
including the right information during the
process of creating the contents page
for my school magazine. For example:
Images, page numbers, masthead, date
etc. However, the weaknesses are
including features such as:
subscriptions, editors letter, buzzwords
and web address; which I will included
when producing my actual magazine.
I also had strengths when using
Photoshop for my contents page.
For example: when adding text,
changing the colour and embossing
the font. On the other hand, there
was weaknesses too; next time I will
add more information and ensure to
cut all of the images out.
