2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. MASTHEAD
Just like the magazine front cover there is a
masthead for the page so the reader/buyer knows
what page they are reading about
The font is unique and isn’t used anywhere else on
the contents page so it can easily be identified
The masthead is usually positioned at the top of the
page, like the masthead on the front cover
Occasionally the masthead has a banner with
colour to make the masthead stand out with the
magazines logo or title next to it, so it can easily be
identified that the logo/title reminds the
reader/buyer what magazine they are reading
3. Images are used differently on the contents page
than the front cover since contents pages usually
have more room to fit everything in
There is usually a main image that the magazine is
trying to promote, but there is also sub images that
are usually a small picture of the person the article
is about or a mini screenshot of the actually article
All images have a number either on the image on
at the side so people will know what page number
they will turn to read more information about that
article from the image
Direct address isn’t always used in images since the
main cover has already attracted the reader/buyer
to have a look at the magazine
MAIN AND SUB IMAGES
Music magazines usually show a mini
version/screenshot of the front cover to remind
the reader what magazine they are reading –
which creates a image for there magazine
The images don’t always have text next to the
image, if they do it is usually are short
summary of what’s in the article
4. Nearly all music magazines have a colour scheme just like
the front cover, since it keeps it simple and easy to read –
in this case Kerrang magazine has a black and yellow
colour scheme which is used on all the cover lines
However in this music magazine there isn’t much
information about each article unlike some other
magazines
The colour scheme gives a dynamic look to the magazine,
where it fits into those specific colours – sometimes the
colour scheme is linked throughout out the whole
magazine from the front cover to the last cover on the
page
COLOUR SCHEME
5. Music magazine contents pages are usually in 2 or 3 columns,
they are sometimes organised by thick coloured lines that may
be part of the colour scheme
Billboard magazine has put the three sub images aligned
together and then the main image near the middle of the
contents page
The text and page numbers are organised into sections that can
easily be read by people, which have been split with the
coloured lines. The cover lines are usually bigger or bolder than
the text of information below it as well
Most music magazines have the magazines title/logo with the
page number at the bottom, in some cases in can also include
the magazine website address as well
Some music magazines may contain information for
subscriptions for there magazine with offers occasionally
ORGANISATION
6. The regular information that are in music magazines are the
regulars – which feature in every monthly/daily magazine
that they publish
There is usually a section were most of the information for
the magazine is located – in this case most of the
information is in the broken down columns on the right hand
side with sections for each part of the magazine
Most music magazines do have a album section for either
new releases or reviews of the music the article is about
INFORMATION
7. The editors note/letter is usually found on the
contents page which is usually a small
paragraph that is written by the editor of the
magazine
They could talk about parts of the magazine or
there personal life when they were producing
the magazine
The editors paragraph usually has a a
illuminated letter (the first word has a bigger
font than the rest of the text)
EDITORS LETTER
8. The sub lines in music magazines are underneath the
cover lines that may be a different font size than the
information that sub lines give – in a smaller font of text
so it doesn’t take the focus of the images or cover lines
Sub lines are used to give more information of the cover
line e.g.The cover line ‘English beat’ could suggest
English artist/bands - which is found in the sub lines
which says a artist like Lilly Allen
SUB LINES
9. Quotes can also be used on the contents page,
just like the front cover. The quotes used in the
contents page usually is linked from a image on
the magazine – in this magazine it is the main
image
The quote could be from the article and persuade
the reader/buyer who are curious about why the
artist said those words to look at page 56 where
the article for the Duffy interview is
QUOTES
10. Buzzwords are used on both the front
cover and the contents page to make
the magazine feel special and unique
that this one magazine has something
that the others don’t provide
Buzzwords that may be used are
‘exclusive’ ‘collector’s special’ ‘world
only’
This can convince readers to buy the
magazine if no one else has written
about this article or has a exclusive
interview etc.
