Coal gasification is a process that converts solid coal into a combustible gas, composed primarily of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, by adding an oxidizing agent. It offers a practical means of utilizing coal for meeting stringent environmental control requirements. In the gasification process, sulfur present in the coal is converted to hydrogen sulfide and can be easily removed from gas streams. Nitrogen oxides are not formed to any appreciable extent. There are different types of gasification processes including gas phase reactions, gas-solid phase reactions, and surface gasification. Thar coalfield in Pakistan has a potential of 175.6 billion tons of coal and gasification provides an option to utilize this coal economically.
