Cloud computing bringing the dark side of enterprise apps into the light by...Khazret Sapenov
The document discusses how cloud computing can help bring enterprise applications to "the light" by addressing challenges such as scalability, fault tolerance, and state management. It argues that a REST-based SOA using hypermedia as the engine of application state can help build applications that are resilient, partition tolerant, and lack single points of failure, moving enterprises towards the elastic "world of web scale."
1) Big changes are happening in enterprise IT as new technologies become available that allow for more agile and less constrained applications.
2) Traditional enterprise applications were limited by high costs, difficulty changing, and siloed data, but new capabilities from cloud, mobile, social, and open source allow for custom apps with competitive advantages.
3) A wave of disruptive technologies like increased processing power and decreased storage costs require changing application design patterns from traditional scale-up architectures to more flexible scale-out and REST-based approaches.

Fundamental to any distributed system are communication patterns: point-to-point, request-reply, transactional queues, and publish-subscribe. Large distributed systems often employ two or more communication patterns. Using a single middleware that supports multiple communication patterns is a very cost-effective way of developing and maintaining large distributed systems. The talk will then describe how RTI Connext Messaging goes beyond vanilla DDS and implements various communication patterns including request-reply, command-response, and guaranteed delivery. You will also learn how these patterns can be combined to create interesting variations when the underlying substrate is as powerful as DDS. We’ll also discuss APIs for creating high-performance applications using the request-reply communication pattern.

This document discusses patterns of data distribution that are commonly used when building distributed systems and applications. It identifies three main patterns: publish-subscribe, point-to-point, and request-reply. The document argues that middleware platforms typically implement these patterns in a rigid way, whereas a better approach is for platforms to be built using fundamental "super-patterns" that can be constrained or composed to derive the common patterns. This allows platforms to be more flexible and performant while still providing familiar patterns to application developers. The document also discusses challenges for platform builders in areas like system architecture, performance, and application interfaces.

Disaster Recovery in the Cloud: A Case Study - AWS Washington D.C. Symposium ...Amazon Web Services
The document outlines a presentation given at the 2014 AWS Government, Education, and Nonprofits Symposium in Washington DC from June 24-26. The presentation discusses the implementation of a cloud-based disaster recovery setup for the City of Asheville using AWS. It covers the current on-premises systems, business case for moving to AWS for DR, how the DR environment was setup in AWS, and overcoming concerns about using the cloud for critical systems.
These days, EVERY workload is considered critical by someone in the organization. As a result, SLAs are shrinking. IT is challenged to meet these SLAs, but there isn’t enough budget to provide services like disaster recovery (DR) using traditional methods and infrastructure. The good news is that public cloud platforms, like AWS, are becoming the de facto infrastructure choice for DR. However, workload portability solutions that simplify cross-platform or cloud recovery are required to meet most RTO & RPO SLAs in the cloud. AWS provides the infrastructure we need to bring DR to tier 2 and tier 3 workloads that have never been able to afford it before. Now, we need orchestration and automation to make it scalable and reliable.
In this session you will learn key considerations and practical steps for getting to the AWS cloud and how you can leverage Amazon S3 storage for cost-effective disaster recovery. Dow Jones will also share details on their migration to AWS Cloud, the benefits realized there, and what the future looks like. Session sponsored by Commvault.
The document discusses data deduplication technologies and the "Backup Redesign Initiative". The Initiative aims to fully transform backup to be disk-centric rather than tape-centric, integrating deduplication, replication, and virtual machine image-based backup directly into backup software. This will provide faster and more automated disaster recovery.

Business Objects is a leading business intelligence software company that offers its solutions via a software-as-a-service model called OnDemand. To optimize the OnDemand experience and scale rapidly, Business Objects required a reliable hosting partner. Business Objects chose OpSource, who provided a turnkey SaaS delivery solution ensuring high performance, scalability, and a cost-effective pricing structure. With OpSource, Business Objects grew its OnDemand userbase from 0 to 67,000 in 18 months and reduced SaaS delivery costs significantly.
This whitepaper examines the financial challenges of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model, which relies on monthly or quarterly subscription fees rather than one-time licensing fees. Due to the delayed cash flow, SaaS companies require 50-70% more capital for growth compared to traditional software vendors. High sales and marketing costs also strain cash flow. Current financing options are inefficient or constrained. SaaS Capital offers debt financing tailored to the SaaS model by leveraging recurring revenue streams.
The document discusses how SaaS ISVs can scale their applications and business by leveraging Oracle's $4.3B investment in products like the database, middleware, operating systems, and servers, and focusing their own R&D on unique customer requirements. It provides examples of successful SaaS companies that run on Oracle and outlines Oracle and OpSource's partnership to provide complete solutions for SaaS ISVs. Resources are listed for SaaS ISVs to learn more about Oracle's offerings and models and to schedule a consultation.
The webinar will begin at 9am PT / Noon ET. It will feature presentations from Mark Wayne, EVP Sales of ANX, and Glenn Moore, VP of Marketing of ANX. They will discuss creating secure site-to-cloud VPN connections to enterprise clouds using ANX's Virtual Private Connector solution powered by OpSource clouds. Attendees can ask questions during the webinar and receive a free trial of OpSource Cloud and ANX services.
