The CLEANED project aims to develop a framework for rapid environmental assessments of livestock and aquaculture interventions. The framework aims to be flexible, capture complex farming systems, and identify environmental impacts, trade-offs and interlinkages. It will guide efforts to support sustainable development along value chains. The CLEANED team, consisting of researchers from various organizations, has reviewed existing frameworks, consulted experts, developed a general framework, and piloted it for smallholder dairy systems in Tanzania. The current workshop aims to share results, get input on the framework, and discuss next steps.
Develop a framework to assess environmental impacts of livestock projects
1. Introducing the CLEANED project
Mats Lannerstad (ILRI)
CLEANED validation, synthesis and planning workshop
Machakos, Kenya, 30-31 October 2014
2. THE CLEANED VCs FRAMEWORK
2
• Investments in livestock production in developing countries has a
great potential to lift millions of smallholders out of poverty
• Often only focused on increased production and economics
• Purpose of CLEANED project to develop ”a framework for rapid
environmental ex ante assessments” of interventions in livestock and
aquaculture production in developing countries
• A secured Environment will ensure a long term Sustainable
development of livestock production, that will contribute to higher
availability of animal products for better Nutrition among the poor
3. Comprehensive Livestock and Aquaculture
Environmental Assessment
for Improved Nutrition, a Secured Environment
and Sustainable Development
along
Value Chains
CLEANED VCs
4. Aim of project
• Develop a relatively rapid and flexible tool that can be used
across livestock and aquaculture systems and give ex ante
environmental guidance for interventions
4
• Design a tool that captures complex farming systems
dominating developing countries
– To capture impacts in time and space from up-scaling
– To cover multiple environmental dimensions
– To identify dimension trade-offs and inter-linkages

a new environmental framework
to make livestock production
more sustainable

Editor's Notes
Most investments in livestock production in developing countries focus on
Increase Production
Increase Productivity
Increase the Economic return
2. But heavy critique as this cannnot happen in isolation to environment and natural resources under heavy pressure.
Think about the great attention given to discussion around Plantary Boundary concept
In 2006, the book ”Livstock’s Long Shadow” by Henning Steinfeld, FAO – raised the enormous pressure on the environment from livestock production
This is in particular important in developing countries where many hundred million smallholders directly live in and from what healthy landscape can produce.
3. This was highlighted by:
Critique of the CRP Livestock and Fish – it had too little focus on the environment – no changed and clear role in this CRP
Monica Zurec, BMGF, pushed for these issues to be addressed/funded by BMGF – thus this CLEANED project
4. Since there is great potential to lift millions out of poverty and into a more resilient livelihood situation by investing in livestock production, there is a need to be able to do ”rapid ex ante assessments” of potential interventions
To give guidance for both economic and environmentally sustainable investments
To give this guidance without having to collect data and measurements during several years
