Classification Research
Introduction 
• In this presentation I will look at any regulations or 
classifications which need to be taken into 
consideration when making my music video. I will 
also look into the governing bodies of the 
classifications and the restrictions, so our video can 
be made to fit its purpose and target audience.
Overview 
• At the current time there are no classification 
obligations in place which apply to every case such as 
film classifications for the producers to abide by *. 
However the government planned to introduce BBFC 
age ratings on music videos similar to the film 
industry on April 6th 2014. 
* Except the VRA 
however this 
does not apply to 
everything.
Background 
• The VRA (video recordings act 
1984), which governs age 
ratings in the UK only applies 
to physical works (such as 
DVD’s). These must have an 
age rating from an 
appropriate source (e.g. BBFC) 
however some works 
primarily about music or sport 
among others are exempt 
from the statutory 
classifications.
Current position 
• The suggested changes for the classifications of 
music videos are not yet in place. On the 31st of 
January the Government closed consultation on the 
Draft for the new VRA, based on a joint paper in 
response to the 2012 consultation by the BPI, the 
British Video Association, the BBFC and the Video 
Standards Council. However at this current time 
there are still no statutory obligations in place.
