Organization :
• According to BRO, the hill roads are classified as,
• 1. National Highways
• 2. Class 9 ( 6 m wide for 3 - tonnes vehicles )
• 3. Class 5 ( 4.9 m wide for 1 - tonnes vehicles )
• 4. Class 3 ( 2.45 m to 3.65 m wide for jeeps )

• 1. National Highways (NH)
• 2. State Highways (SH)
• 3. Major District Roads (MDR)
• 4. Other District Roads ( ODR)
• 5. Village Roads (VR)

4. • classification according to use :
• 1. Motor Roads : They are usually meant for fast
moving vehicles. These are important from the
engineering point of view.
• 2. Bridle Paths : These roads are meant for
pedestrians and other pack transports such as
horses, ponies etc.The width of these paths
varies from 2 m to 2.5 m. The side drains are
provided for these paths.
• 3.Village Tracks : These are also known as
village paths and they connect small villages and
other working places over which cattle and
pedestrians only move. The width of village
tracks varies from 1 m to 1.5 m.

• The importance of hill roads can be imagined
from the following points.

6. • 1.Economic development :
• The hilly areas are backward as far as modern
civilization, culture and education are concerned.
• The main activity of the people in these areas is
agriculture.
• The lands in hillas are suited for a variety of
crops like apples, apricots, cherry etc. among
fruits and vegetables.
• If these crops economically transported outside,
the economic life of the people can be
considerably improved.

7. • 2. Industrial development :
• These are certain areas of hills which are ideally
suited for growing tea and jute and for breeding up
silk worms.
• The Presence of roads can help in setting up of the
industries of these products in the hilly areas.
• 3. Forest wealth :
• The hilly areas contain huge forest wealth in the form
of timbers, minerals, stones etc. And all these
wealths form the basic valuables for developing the
country as a whole. Efficient transportation system
for carrying these valuables to the plains is
necessary.

8. • 4. Strategic Considerations :
• In case of emergency, such as war, a well
planned system of road in hilly areas helps
considerably for moving the army from one place
to the other.
• 5. Tourism :
• Some of the hilly areas present immense natural
scenic beauty which attracts thousands of local
and foreign tourists. The construction of hill roads
is probably the main controlling factor for the
development of tourism.
