WHAT IS BIOLOGY???
•It is the science of life forms and living
processes.
•Biology is defined as the study of living
organisms, their origins, anatomy,
morphology, physiology, behavior and
distribution.

BRANCHES OF BIOLOGY……
ANATOMY: study of internal
structure of organisms and
their parts
BIOCHEMISTRY: study of
chemical processes that
occur within living organisms
BIOPHYSICS: study of
application of laws of physics
in biological processes
BIOTECHNOLOGY:exploitation
of biological processes such as
genetic manipulation of micro-
organisms for the production of
antibiotics, hormones, etc.
BOTANY: study of plants,
including their physiology,
structure, genetics, and ecology
CELL BIOLOGY: study of cell structure
and function, and it revolves around
the concept that the cell is the
fundamental unit of life
ECOLOGY: deals with the relations of
organisms to one another and to their
physical surroundings.
EVOLUTION: the process by which different
kinds of living organisms are thought to
have developed and diversified from
earlier forms during the history of the
earth

BRANCHES OF BIOLOGY……
GENETICS: study of genes,
genetic variation, and heredity
in living organisms
IMMUNOLOGY: branch of
medicine and biology
concerned with immunity
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY: deals
with the structure and
function of the proteins and
nucleic acids.
MICROBIOLOGY: study of
microscopic organisms, those
being unicellular, multicellular,
or acellular.
PHYSIOLOGY: deals with the
normal functions of living
organisms and their parts
STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY: branch of
molecular biology, biochemistry, and
biophysics dealing with the molecular
structure of biological macro-molecules.
VIROLOGY: branch of science that
deals with the study of viruses
ZOOLOGY: study of the behavior,
structure, physiology, classification,
and distribution of animals.

CAREER OPTIONS IN BIOLOGY…….
Biology degrees are extensive, so as you might expect, careers for biology
graduates are equally as wide-ranging. Careers you could pursue with a
biology degree include:
• Research scientist
• Pharmacologist
• Biologist
• Ecologist
• Nature conservation officer
• Biotechnologist
• Forensic scientist
• Government agency roles
• Science writer
