The history of broadcasting in India began in the 1920s with amateur radio clubs starting the first radio services in cities like Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. The British government then established control over radio, forming the Indian Broadcasting Company in 1926. After this company failed, the government created the Indian State Broadcasting Service in 1930. In 1935, Lionel Fielden was appointed as the Controller of Broadcasting, and he established All India Radio which became the dominant public broadcaster. Television services began in Delhi in 1959 and were later expanded, with Doordarshan taking over television broadcasting from AIR in 1976. Satellite television was introduced to India in the 1990s, increasing private broadcasting.
