5. What OS are these?
cis 1-202-ch9Z PROJECT Mac OS X vs Windows vs Unix/Linux Intro Status Objectives Analysis Recommendation Slide 5
Mac OS
● MacOS is the OS commonly
found on Apple’s models of
MacBooks and iMacs
● Made by Apple Inc.
● Is a Unix like OS
● First released in 2001
Windows OS
● Windows has been the common OS
many people have been familiar with
● Made by Microsoft (first released in
1985)
● Not Unix based, was created from
MS-DOS with IBM
Linux Mint
● Linux Mint is among the most
popular Linux distros in the market
● Built on the open source Linux Kernel
● Linux Kernel was created by Linus
Torvalds in 1991
● Linux Kernel was built from Unix
6. Extra info on each OS
cis 1-202-ch9Z PROJECT Mac OS X vs Windows vs Unix/Linux Intro Status Objectives Analysis Recommendation Slide 6
Mac OS Windows OS Linux and Linux Distros
● MacOS is divided up into separate
versions (Ventra, Monterey, etc)
● Mac OS only works with the hardware
it was designed with (Intel and ARM)
● Older Apple hardware tend to be
unable to support newer OS versions
● Is “free” but still has a license fee to
unlock additional features and remove
watermark
● A lot of malware is coded to work on
Windows OS
● Sometimes updates cause issues
● Windows 10 and 11 are the major
versions (Windows 10 still hold majority
share)
● Only the Linux Kernel is under a standard
● Community made distros are what makes
the Kernel into an OS
● There are multiple distros and they are
not under a common standard
● Some distros are better than others

What does each OS have to offer?
This is an apples to oranges comparison
as every operating system has different
requirements along with VERY different
resource usages. Each OS also serve
different purposes.
Mac OS
Windows OS Linux
● Much of the software that MacOS
supports tend to be MacOS
exclusive
● To get into the MacOS
environment buying an Apple
machine is very likely
● It’s a very closed environment
● Is good for office and school work
● The best OS for playing video
games (Steam, Epic Games Store,
etc)
● Widely supported by many
different third party software (
● Is accepted is the standard OS by
the tech industry
● Support for Windows 11 is
narrower
● Support for Windows 10 is much
wider
● Linux Distro Mint Is the best
distro of the many distros in
terms of user friendliness
● 3rd party soft support varies
greatly as there is no standard
with the Linux distros
● Open source code that is free to
edit by the user

Best in
office/schoolwork Best all around Best in resource utilization
● Access to the Apple's exclusive
applications (iCloud, iMovie, etc)
● Low security risks from closed
environment
● Software for MacOS is very optimized
● Hardware that Apple develops is
optimized for Mac OS
● Windows has been the standard OS
many people use
● Both closed and open environment
● Windows is widely supported by the
industry
● Has the best support for playing
video games
● Linux in general has a low resource
utilization
● Open source and you are free to access the
code
● Friendly to older hardware
● Lowest security risks
● An active community that supports
development
