Operating System
•Intro:
An operating system (OS) is a type
of system software that controls
the resources used by computer
hardware and software while also
offering a variety of services to
computer programs.
Types Of Operating System(OS)
• Single User OS
• Multi-tasking
• Batch Processing
• Multi-Programming
• OFF Line Processing
• Distributed Data Processing
• Time sharing
• Real Time System
• Multi- processing
WINDOWS Operating System
• INTRO:
Windows is operating system from Microsoft Inc. It's a
system program that controls, coordinates and
manipulates overall desktop publishing operations.
Windows is an operating system launched by
Microsoft Corporation. It's completely graphical
grounded operating system. It also gives a platform
to the operation software to run on itself.
Characteristic of Windows:
• 1. GUI (Graphical User Interface)
• 2. Clip Board Memory (Cut & Paste)
• 3. Multitasking
• 4. OLE (Object Linking & Embedding)
• 5. What you see is what you get.
• 6. Plug & Play Utility
Evolution Of Windows:
• 1. Windows 1.0- 2.0 (1985-1992)
• 2. Windows 3.0-3.1 (1990-1994)
• 3. Windows 95 (August 1995)
• 4. Windows XP (October 2001)
• 5. Windows Vista (November 2006)
• 6. Windows 7 (October 2009)
• 7. Windows 8 (August 2012)
• 8. Windows 10 (2015)
Advantage and Disadvantage of Windows:
Advantage
• The system and
interface is user friendly
/ Easy to use
• A large and abundant
selection of applications
Disadvantage
• An operating system
that has a fairly high
price for the basic and
home versions
• Vulnerable to virus
attack
LINUX
• INTRO:
Linux is a completely open-
source operating system
that is supported by a wide
range of devices. Linux now
has an open source
component that allows
anyone to download and
alter the source code. Linux
is a well-known operating
system for servers because
of its dependability and
stability.
LINUX VERSIONS:
• RPM-Based Linux
Distributions
• Debian-Based Linux
Distributions
 Ubuntu-Based Linux
Distributions:
 Knoppix-Based Linux
Distributions:
 Other Noteable Linux
Distributions:
LINUX Features:
 Multithreading: Linux has a multithreading environment that it supports. In
Linux, many threads can be active at once. A thread is a brief piece of process
code. In a later tutorial, I will provide a brief explanation of thread.
 Monolithic kernel: The kernel for Linux is monolithic. The complete operating
system operates in kernel mode rather than user mode under this type of
operating system architecture. To use hardware, a program or application must
issue a system call request to the kernel mode
Benefits Of Using Linux:
 Because it is open-source, anybody with programming skills can alter it.
 There are currently millions of programs and apps available for Linux operating systems, most
of them free!
 Once Linux is installed, an antivirus program is no longer required! Linux is a very safe
operating system.
 A server running Linux could operate continuously for years on end without having to reboot.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Linux:
ADVANTAGES
• 1. Open Source
• 2. Security
• 3. Speed
• 4. Redesigning
• 5. Low System
Specifications
DISADVANTAGES
• 1. Learning Curve
• 2. Installing
Software
• 3. Lack of Games
• 4. Hardware Drivers
Mac Operating System
• INTRO:
MacOs is a proprietary graphical
operating system designed by
Apple Inc. to be used on the
brand’s desktop PC and laptops. It
was introduced in 1984 as the
Macintosh System Software to run
Apple’s Macintosh personal
computers and rapidly raised the
popularity of Graphical User
Interfaces (GUIs) and even
inspired Microsoft to transition
from its user input method to GUI
for the Windows OS.
Different Main Versions of the Mac OS
• Public Beta: "Kodiak"(September 2000)
• Version 10.0: "Cheetah"(March 2001)
• Version 10.1: "Puma"(September 2001)
• Version 10.3: "Panther"(October 2003)
• Version 10.6: "Snow Leopard"(August 2009)
• Version 10.7: "Lion"(July 2011)
• Version 10.9: "Mavericks"(October 2013)
• Version 10.12: "Sierra"(September 2016)
• Version 11: "Big Sur"(November 2020)
Advantages and Disadvantages of Mac os
Advantages
 Useful apps are
included for free
 Cleaner and more user
friendly interface
 Less susceptible to
malware and viruses
Disadvantages
 Limited and restricted
availability of apps
 Inflexibility for hardware
upgrades and
customization
 Owning a macOs device
can be very expensive
Mac OS VS Linux VS Windows
Mac OS
• User friendly
• Security
• Reliable
Integration
• Better
performance
• Gaming
Linux
• Various
Distributions
• Security
• Community
• Gaming
Windows
• Cost
• Compatibilit
y and
customizatio
n
• Multiple
options
• Gaming
experience
Conclusion:
• The various systems discussed above have their strengths
and weaknesses: Windows is cheap with versatile
Applications but has poor security; Linux is flexible with
high security but has lesser applications and complexity in
usage; MACOS is fast with an easy-to-use interface and
great cloud services at the cost of expense.
• In our conclusion, we found that every operating system
has its own advantages which in some cases might be a
disadvantage for another one.
