This document discusses presence pedagogy, an educational approach using 3D virtual worlds. It describes how educators at Appalachian State University built an ActiveWorlds environment called the AET Zone to facilitate online learning communities. Presence pedagogy capitalizes on social constructivism and the sense of presence and co-presence in virtual worlds to encourage collaboration, conversations, and the sharing of knowledge among students and instructors. The model provides a transformative online space where learners can move between different communities of practice.
