Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. What You Need
The Cake…
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 eggs
¾ tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
¾ cup cocoa
½ tsp salt
2 cup white sugar
2 tsp vanilla
¾ cup soft butter
1 ½ cup milk
Cream butter, sugar
together.
Add eggs one at a
time and beat until
smooth.
Add dry ingredients,
slowly.
Add milk and beat
until smooth.
Beat until silky
smooth.
4. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and bake for about 30-35
minutes (depending on your oven).
Be careful, its HOT!
LET IT
COOL!
5. THE Best Chocolate
Icing
What You Need
1/3 cup butter
2/3 cup cocoa
2-2/3 cup
powdered
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon
vanilla
*I double this
recipe
Grab a pot.
On low heat melt butter & add cocoa. It
will seem very stiff and you may think
you’ve messed up…you haven’t! Keep
going. Mix only until cocoa blended.
Remove from heat and transfer to mixer.
Mix and add milk and powdered sugar,
alternating and blending until smooth but
stiff
6. Putting It Together…
After cake has
cooled and been
removed from pan.
CUT in half. Add a
nice thick layer of
icing and put top of
cake back on.
Now ice the
top and
sides.
TIP: Add
some fruit
or jam in
the center
layer.
