Chlortetracycline was the first tetracycline antibiotic identified in 1945 by Benjamin Duggar from an actinomycete cultured from soil. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat conjunctivitis in cats and may increase the effects of the neuromuscular blocking drug atracurium besilate in some patients.
