Chingiz Aitmatov was a prominent Kyrgyz and Soviet author who wrote in both Russian and Kyrgyz. He made his literary debut in 1952 and published stories in Russian. Aitmatov held several prestigious roles including serving as a reporter for Pravda from 1958-1966, and as chairman of the Cinema Union of Kyrgyzstan from 1964-1985. He won numerous awards for his works and served in diplomatic roles for the Soviet Union, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan. Some of Aitmatov's most notable novels include 'Jamila' (1958), 'The First Teacher' (1967), and 'Farewell, Gulsary!' (1967). He died in 2008
