14. Chemawa Pre-AVID
¡ All teachers were teaching to the best of their
ability but were all using different systems to help
students understand. We lacked unified strategies
across all classes for things like taking notes,
organization, and reading for comprehension.
¡ Most students were not matriculating to 4 year
colleges and graduating from them after high
school
¡ Most students did not see college education as
viable or useful to them.
¡ We were missing a school-wide conversation about
and road map to a college education
¡ We were also not teaching skills necessary for
college survival in many cases.
15. Implementation
¡ We began with one class and added a new
class each year.
¡ Teachers went to national training conferences
to learn AVID methodologies.
¡ Common AVID methodologies (Cornell Notes,
Socratic Dialogue, Collaborative work, and
Organization) were rolled out in all academic
classes.
¡ Teachers, Administrators and Counselors formed
and participated in an AVID Site Council that
oversaw, advised and supported school-wide
implementation of AVID methodologies.
16. AVID has changed our school!
¡ Students are having more and more conversations about
college and college readiness!
¡ Classes are conducted and taught with common strategies
and more rigor than previous to the AVID program!
¡ We are graduating more students who are attending 2 and 4
year colleges!
¡ We are giving out more money in scholarships and students
are earning outside scholarship money at a rate higher than
ever before!
¡ Students are beginning to come to Chemawa specifically for
college preparation and increased academic achievement!
¡ Partnership with Willamette University for support in tutoring,
interns, college experiences and program elements.
17. Areas for improvement
¡ We need to recruit and vet more college tutors for classes.
¡ Chemawa is desperately in need of high level classes like foreign
language, advanced math, AP classes, and honors classes.
¡ The school climate still needs to change in order to promote
staying in school all 4 years to be prepared for college rather
than just graduating once a student receives the credits for
graduation.
¡ We can always use speakers in class and success stories that
students can use as examples and motivation to continue.
¡ Service Learning is still a difficult process on campus which is in
need of structure.
¡ We need to integrate the dorms in the programs so that dorm
staff can help support the program and students.
¡ Staff still need AVID training and we need support in
encouraging more teachers to be AVID elective teachers.
18. In Students’ Voice (Survey

student. I have brought up my grade in most of my
class's . I have also gained the strength to read aloud
in my class's and to write essays more easily.”
¡ “It helped me realize that I can ask my teachers about
anything I'm having a problem with in class. I feel
more confident about speaking to college
representatives about their college and asking about
tips they can give me to help me get into college.”
¡ “It's help me stay on task, and keep up my grades to
achieve.”
