This document provides an overview of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Santan Junior High School. AVID aims to close the achievement gap and prepare all students for college by providing academic and social support. It targets first-generation potential college students with a 2.0-3.5 GPA. The AVID elective class teaches organizational skills, writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading strategies to support students taking rigorous courses. Data shows that AVID students have higher rates of taking college-level courses, enrolling in algebra, persisting in college, and earning scholarships for higher education.
Academic Writing Evaluation - Denise Stewart, General Manager Operations, and...Studiosity.com
Helping with more - and earlier - insight into students' writing abilities, Studiosity partners can already use the Academic Writing Evaluation (AWE) service now.
Outcomes: More students enrolling are less prepared. Universities need the insight to control the quality of degrees offered; and most importantly, to provide the best possible experience for the students arriving, regardless of CALD, EAL backgrounds, socio-economically diverse circumstances, including international enrolments.
Recommended action: Academic Writing Evaluation (AWE) - ask your Studiosity Partnership Manager to switch on this extra service for your students, or particular cohorts.
This year's Studiosity 'Students First' Symposium was hosted at La Trobe University City Campus, 25 and 26 July 2019.

Online academic support & student retention: Early signs of a positive correlation at CQUniversity CQUniversity has found indications of a positive correlation between Studiosity usage and retention, when compared to retention rates in the general student cohort. This presentation will walk through these findings and offer some useful food for thought.
Chris Veraa is Director of Student Experience at CQUniversity, and brought the room three years (2017, 2018, 2019) worth of data on Studiosity users: retention, academic success, rates of unit failure, and also how students’ anecdotal feedback compares to academic outcomes.
CQUniversity Studiosity users (on average):
• Have a 16.45% higher rate of retention than the cohort
• Experience 21.7% less unit failure than the cohort
• Are 17.31% less likely to be placed on academic probation than the cohort

CCCOER OER Degree Research with Achieving the Dream, SRI Education, and rpk G...Una Daly
An OER-based degree, sometimes referred to as a Zero-Textbook-Cost degree, is a pathway to a degree or credential with no textbook costs. Faculty have redesigned the courses in the pathway to use open educational resources (OER) instead of traditional commercial textbooks and early research shows students are succeeding as well or better than peers in traditional courses while saving up to 25% on the cost of attendance. Additional research has shown that a college may be able to increase tuition revenue through increased student persistence and success in these pathways.
With the largest OER degree grant initiative of its kind launched last year at 38 colleges in 13 U.S. states, Achieving the Dream, has undertaken research to look at the academic and financial impact to students and their institutions. Grant partners SRI, along with partner rpk GROUP, is conducting research and evaluation to identify impact and cost as well as the facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of this model. Join us to hear from the researchers about methodology, benefits and challenges for colleges, and findings from the first semester of the grant.
When: Wed, April 12 1st, 10amPST/1pmEST
Featured Speakers:
Jessica Mislevy, PhD is a senior researcher with SRI Education’s Center for Technology in Learning and one of the key researchers for the ATD OER Degree Initiative.
Rick Staisloff is the founder and a principal of rpkGROUP, a leading national consulting firm supporting colleges, universities, and other non-profits with their growth and reallocation strategies, who leads the cost analysis for institutions and students participating in the ATD OER Degree Initiative.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
