The Chars Livelihoods Programme aims to support household livelihoods by raising houses above the high flood line, through public works offering local employment in the hungry season, when income is most needed.

Brown new zealand mud snails in capitol lake
New Zealand mud snails were found in Capitol Lake in 2009. They reproduce rapidly, with each snail producing 20-120 offspring per year. In response, agencies drained and froze the lake to kill the snails. A freeze reduced the snail population from 20,000 per square meter to 400 per square meter after 5 days. They then flushed the lake with saltwater at 28.7 parts per thousand, exposing the snails to salinity above 20 parts per thousand for 7-8 hours, resulting in 12% snail mortality. While the saltwater flush negatively impacted overall benthic invertebrate abundance, the resident community was expected to recover to similar diversity over time. Our actions are impacting future generations by polluting the air, water, and land on which we all depend for survival.

In our yards, our parks and along our streets we plant lines of lonely trees. But a tree is not a forest. Lonely trees are severed from their ecological communities—at the mercy of wind, weather and disease. CSDI

CBA requires communication methods and tools to deal in an integrated manner with climate change issues, in order to:
• involve communities through participation and dialogue;
• discover with farmers appropriate technologies, livelihood options and sound economic practices;
• share knowledge through improved advisory services, such as Farmer and Climate Field Schools, demonstrations, field days etc.
Communication for Development (ComDev) is an approach promoted by FAO and other development agencies. It is central to CBA as it combines participatory communication methods and processes with a variety of media and tools, ranging from rural radio to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).
The FAO’s Communication for Sustainable Development Initiative (CSDI) is documenting and sharing good practices on the use of communication for CBA and it is piloting out strategies and services in selected pilot areas, namely: Congo, Jamaica, Bangladesh and Bolivia. These initiatives and other ongoing efforts and experiences will be shared and assessed in a working session at the conference come up with a common framework on communication for CBA.

However, widespread poverty remains a challenge, with over 200 million rural people below the poverty line.

Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.
