Sp3 youth and young adult programs 7.21.14
The Youth & Young Adult Division helps youth aged 14-26 become active citizens by strengthening local services, partnerships and opportunities. They focus on outreach, violence prevention, job training and placement to help the 17% of disengaged youth facing barriers like lack of jobs, education or skills. Since 2012 they have served over 400 youth, employed over 500 through job programs, placed over 130 in jobs or housing, and been awarded over $500,000 in grants.
Avenues for Homeless Youth
Avenues for Homeless Youth operates four programs in the Twin Cities that provide shelter and transitional housing for over 200 homeless youth per year. The programs include a shelter in North Minneapolis, as well as GLBT, suburban, and Minneapolis host home programs. Host homes provide a safe, stable transitional housing option at 50% lower cost than congregate housing. They aim to build long-term supportive relationships critical for youth success. The host home model places homeless youth with volunteer community members who are trained and supported by program managers.

Benefits include a monthly stipend, health insurance, and an education award upon completion.

It found that vocational training and savings groups can increase girls' self-esteem, skills, and financial independence. Vocational training allowed girls to earn an income while learning skills. Recommendations included linking vocational training to jobs, engaging adults, and conducting longitudinal studies to assess long-term impacts.

While they cite the same top reasons for joining as older members, such as networking and quality content, the importance of these reasons is weaker for Millennials. Millennials renew memberships when they feel a sense of community connection. Non-members do not join due to never being invited. Millennials are less engaged with organizations than older members by attending fewer events and reading publications less frequently. All generations highly value peer-reviewed journals, but non-member Millennials prefer continuing education resources more. Younger generations want greater engagement from organizations and have lower satisfaction levels the newer the generation.

The Ohio Youth Advisory Board exists to advocate for policies that affect youth in out-of-home care. Their 2012-2013 strategic plan focuses on education, workforce, finance/resources, housing, legislation, and developing youth voice in court. They ask the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to fund an annual youth conference, hire regional aftercare coordinators, establish a transitional housing task force, continue TANF independent living allocations, and develop a two-part website plan. The Ohio YAB seeks to be the knowledgeable statewide voice that influences policies and practices for all current and former foster youth in Ohio.
