Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is a condition where visually impaired individuals experience vivid, complex visual hallucinations while maintaining mental lucidity. It is caused by a lack of visual sensory input to the brain leading to spontaneous visual images. CBS hallucinations typically involve detailed scenes or people and occur briefly and when extra visual stimulation is limited. Affected individuals are aware the images are not real. The condition is diagnosed after ruling out other causes and usually resolves within a year to 18 months with reassurance and treating any underlying visual impairment.
