Character Analysis Of Mercy
In A Mercy, readers are able to see several phases of changes each individual characters go through
throughout the book. Lina, she goes through the phase where her experience changes her thinking.
Jacob, he changes by community, the surrounding environment he is surrounded by. Florens, the
main character of this book especially go through this phase several times. Readers see how her
experiences, family, race, and class alter her which is similar to how American's identity is being
determined today. First, readers see, from the overall experiences Florens has throughout the book,
how her identity is determined which is similar to how American's identity is determined today. For
instance, on the very beginning of A Mercy, Morrison references something strange thing that is
somewhat out of her context. Florens says, "As a result, Lina says, my feet are useless..." (4). The
quote illustrates that how Florens knows her identity or her feature that she has about her that her
feet are useless. The quote also claims about how Floren's identity is or what Florens though about
her identity is which can be used to compare how Florens have changed throughout her experience.
Another examples is shown when in the end of the book Florens shows how she has changed
through her experience that refers back to the the experience she had with her mother, Minha Mae.
She says, "...Mae, you can have pleasure now because the soles of my feet are hard as cypress"
(189). What Florens says demonstrates

Summer of the Mad Monk Essay
The Summer of The Mad Monk
The year is 1936. Philip Tyler is an imaginative, 12–year–old boy. He lives on a farm outside of the
small town of Delia in Alberta but their farm is suffering and their lives are suffering because of the
Great Depression. They have lived in poverty for as long as he could remember, so he, like many
other boys in that time had to be creative and imaginative.
School was nearing the end of the year, and he and his best friend Digger had nothing to look
forward to. Diggers father had noticed and he gave the boys an old .22 to work on because the barrel
was crooked. Pip and Digger had worked on the thing for weeks and when they were done, it looked
funny so they carved the handle to look like an old Colt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phillip thought that he might be still alive, in the form of Raspinsky! So Pip did a lot of research and
settled the Raspinsky was definitely Rasputin. A few weeks later, Pip gained enough courage to go
up to the blacksmith and ask him. Right before he was going to knock on the door of the shop he
heard the voices of two people, (One which was Raspinskys) and another voice in Russian. So he
found a hole in the wall and he looked through but he could not see anyone because they were
behind him! A the Russian man grabbed Pip and pulled him into the shop and asked why he was
spying on them and he just told them the truth that he thought Raspinsky was Rasputin and Rasputin
was trying to escape death by fleeing to Canada.
The blacksmith said he was amazed by how much Phillip knew about him and he told Pip that if he
told anybody that he would have to kill him. Phillip felt like he grew a foot taller! The next day, he
heard that the police were coming to get Raspinsky because he murdered somebody in Manitoba.
But it was just a lie made up by the town's boys because they were scared of him and they wanted
their old blacksmith back. The Mounties still believed the boys, and they took off to go arrest
Raspinsky.
Phillip got on his horse and he rode as fast as he could to town to warn Raspinsky. When he arrived,
he rode to the other side of the

Comparing Two Poems
Compare and Contrast Poems can have many types of hidden messages. It all depends on how you
interpret them. In poems somethings are literal and others are just figurative. My two poems are
"The Village Blacksmith" by famous poet, Emily Dickinson, and "Morning Song" by another well
known poet, Sylvia Plath. "The Village Blacksmith" is about the dedication it takes to not only be a
blacksmith, but to also be a single parent. "Morning Song" is about a new mom that learns that
being a parent isn't what it is cracked up to be. The poems, "Morning Song" and "The Village
Blacksmith" both have a lot in common by both having enjambment, imagery, and stanza. These
poems have allowed me understand the different viewpoints on how parents feel about their kids,
weather it is dolorous or adore. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, in "The Village Blacksmith" the poetic device enjambment is, "And Children coming
home from school / Look in at the open door" (20). The reason why I used this line from the poem is
because the sentence isn't finished, but it continues onto another line. It ends on the word school and
continues on the next line from the word look. The example of the poetic device in the poem,
"Morning Song" is "I'm no more your mother / Than the clouds that distil a mirror to reflect its own
slow / Effacement at the wind's hand" (7–9). Enjambment happens in this line three times, so this
makes it a strong example. Both of these are great examples that can unmistakably show what the
poetic device, enjambment

The Importance Of Dreading Jobs In The Middle Ages
Dreading jobs seems to be common in today's time, with all the technology, people getting to sit
behind desks, and working indoors. They do this so they stay warm in the winter and cool in the
summer, it is easy for some jobs now a days. Back in the Middle Ages, jobs consisted of people
actually having to work in order to keep food on the table, a roof over their head, and their family
that all helped each other out with everything. Back then money was hard to come by because there
was not much of it. What jobs did people do in the Middle Ages? A few include a blacksmith, a
plowman, a carpenter, a miller, a butcher, a draper, and a weaver.
Being a blacksmith was fairly common in the Middle Ages. A blacksmith is a person who makes
and repairs things in iron by hand. They also create objects by iron and steel. There are various
kinds of tools that are made by blacksmiths. These tools include: weapons, cooking utensils,
railings, and agricultural implements. The tools that are used to shape the metal pieces are a chisel,
an anvil, and a hammer. They are called blacksmiths due to the fact that the black fire scale used by
blacksmiths during the job. During the heating, the black layer of oxides is formed on the metal
surface. They can perform the simplest to the most complicated metal–working.
Did you know that the plowman has to do the dirtiest jobs of the medieval world? A plowman is a
very godly person who lives by the first two of the ten commandments. The job includes

Analysis of Bernard MacLaverty's My Dear Palestrina Essay
Analysis of Bernard MacLaverty's My Dear Palestrina
My Dear Palestrina' is a cleverly written short story by Bernard MacLaverty. It is about this young
boy called Danny who discovers his musical talent and goes to this piano teacher called Miss
Swartz. Their friendship develops and seem to be a formidable partnership until Danny is torn away
from his beloved music lessons because of Miss Schwartz private life. Fitted into the story are some
important themes that still continue to exist in today's society. In this essay I will try to explain most
of them to you.
The most notable theme is how the prejudice of people can never be overcome. This is weaved into
the story by the relationship of Danny and Miss Schwartz working well together ... Show more

The Blacksmith is also hated by Danny's father for not being religious because Danny's father says,
"He'd have you into guns and god knows what. Denying religion at the top of his voice." This shows
us that religion is another theme hidden in the story. Right from their very first meeting the
Blacksmith tries to lure Danny away from Miss Schwartz and his family, he wants Danny to live his
own life and make his own decisions soon become evident. When he doesn't make bangs with his
hammer for Danny to walk in time to, it symbolises his want for Danny to live his life the way he
wants to. It is also clear to see the Blacksmiths want for Danny to live his life the way he wants to
when he says, "You're coming to an age now when you've got to think. Don't accept what people tell
you – even your father. Especially your father. And that includes me!"
Bernard MacLaverty has included plenty of imagery and symbolism into a carefully constructed
short story. For example, when Miss Schwartz pointed out to him when the flowers had fallen off
the tree and each week they inspected the swelling fruit, that symbolises the growing repitwa of
music Danny is learning and also his growing relationship with Miss Schwartz. When Miss
Schwartz says, "Lavish love and attention on growing things and they will not let you down", shows
how Miss Schwartz feels about Danny and how she's trying to do what she thinks will keep Danny

Floren And Sorrow In A Mercy By Toni Morrison
"All you need is the plan, the roadmap, and the courage to press on to your destination." declared
Earl Nightingale in the mid–twentieth century. A Mercy is a book by Toni Morrison that takes place
in Virginia in the seventeenth century. The main character of the book Florens, was a slave. When
she was eight years old she was sold to Jacob Vaark to work on a farm. Eight years after she got
there, Jacob hired a blacksmith to do some work on his new house. Florens quickly falls in love with
the blacksmith but later ends up being rejected by him. After this she returns to the farm and
inscribes her story to him on the house walls. Jacob also had another young girl working for him
who went by the name Sorrow. Sorrow was rescued when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She had just had a daughter around the same age as Florens die, but eventually "Rebekka thawed,
relaxed and was even amused by Florens' eagerness for approval...any slight kindness shown her she
munched like a rabbit"(113). When Florens first showed up at Jacob Vaark's farm she was yearning
for attention and kindness as she had just been given away by her mother. Any sort of love or
attention she clung to and it became her purpose in life to be loved and cared for. She was focused
on completing her goal as she didn't want to feel abandonment or alone. Her purpose of was to find
someone who loved her. When Florens' is shown kindness after she was given up she discovers her
purpose of being loved by someone. When Florens gets a bit older and after she meets the
blacksmith, she starts roaming the hills behind the farm. She believes that the feeling she has when
roaming is the feeling of freedom and later writes, "Is that how free feels? I don't like it. I don't want
to be free of you because I am live only with you"(82). Florens' has been a slave wanting someone
to care for her her whole life. When she goes out to experience "freedom" she starts to think that it is
just loneliness. Her image of freedom becomes being lonely, and while she thought she has wanted
freedom, she realizes this isn't what she wants. What she wants is to be with someone and for
someone to be responsible for her and to love her. So when she falls in love with the

Morrison's Summary : A Mercy By Toni Morrison
A Mercy is a fictional work that centers on the lives of both slaves and the slave owners. One of the
main characters that Morrison is focused on is Florens, a sixteen–year–old slave girl who lives on
the D'Ortega tobacco plantation in Virginia. The D'Ortegas are notorious for their cruelty toward
their slaves. It is revealed that the D'Ortega family has spent some time in Angola, where the
Portuguese were known historically for their severe and inhumane treatment of slaves. As such,
Morrison's fictional narrative places itself in the realistic, historical context surrounding the extreme
violence and human cruelty associated with many slave owners. Early on, the reader learns that the
D'Ortegas are in financial trouble. A trader, Jacob Vaark, arrives to the plantation to collect a debt
owed by the family. Vaark stands in direct contrast to the D'Ortegas, and his disproving attitude
towards the cruel family is evident. Jacob Vaark does not support the family's arrogance and
political/religious views either. The D'Ortega family is not able to make payment, but offers a slave
to Jacob as partial payment. Minha mãe, another slave living on the D'Ortega plantation who also
happens to be Florens' mother, sees Jacob as a better option than D'Ortega, and decides to convince
Jacob Vaark to take Florens as partial payment for the debt. Florens feels that she is being
abandoned by her mother, though Minha mãe is simply trying to protect her child. Surprisingly,
when Florens arrives at

Poem Evaluation
Poem Evaluation Poem 1 I chose the first poem because I liked how it kept the reader interested and
it explains the daily life of a blacksmith so well. I like how the poem sets the scene and tone for the
following poems. The poem is about what a blacksmith does in his day to day life, it also shows
how he is strong and works hard. It tells of how he works for his family and how he takes whatever
kind of work is needed. It shows how he is an honest man just working his trade. It also links to the
third poem by saying how the 'titan' was trained in swordsmanship by a blacksmith. The poem
includes a variety of techniques such as emotive language, metaphor, simile and a rhyme scheme.
Emotive language is shown when the blacksmith wipes a tear from his eyes remembering his
deceased mother. The similes are 'Like a sexton ringing the village bell' and 'Like chaff from a
threshing floor'. The metaphors are 'Are strong as iron bands' and 'And looks the whole ... Show

I like how the poem has a 'then and now' feel to it. The poem is about how the castle was built when
the kingdom was in its prime and when there were many strong, hard workers. The poem shows
how the years of exposure to the elements has slowly made the castle part of the scenery. The poem
tells of how the memories made in that castle will remain there forever. The techniques in this poem
are metaphor, imagery, personification, repetition and a rhyme scheme. The metaphor is 'Slowly
eaten by the land'. The personification and repetition are really joint together when the writer says 'If
a stone could speak' it makes you feel as though the castle is alive. There is imagery when the author
says 'Once a vibrant, lively place, the castle is no more, weathered by the winds, and ravaged by
war', this really gives you a clear image of the castle and its

Personal Narrative: My Family Heritage
My family heritage starts back when the greek gods had just been made. Prometheus was creating
humans and their attributes now he didn't get it first try. He made like 5 then he made my great
ancestor on his 6th try, his 7th was the best one he used, now everything was right with my
ancestors but one thing. He pushed my ancestor to the side and didn't use them. Later the Celtic
gods found them and used them in there big group. Now since they had sat there so long they
changed to live longer but faced bad late blooming and late life cycle attributes. So they put in my
ancestor on earth and he was named Piner Jamieson, why Jamieson you might ask, well Pine is a

kill. The knight said that if someone could go and kill the beast they would be granted the title of
king. So Piner was intrigued, one month later 5 days before Samhain Piner decide he was going to
step up he was nervous though, because 24 men have already gone in and not come back. 4 days
before Samhain Piner asked the blacksmith of the village to make him armor in a deal the
Blacksmith would get all of Piner's Belongings if he did not return. But if he did he would make the
Blacksmith the top blacksmith of the land at the Valley forge, the best forge of the land. The

Gender Roles In A Mercy
Gender Roles in "A Mercy" Toni Morrison's "A Mercy" takes place in the 1680's when European
colonies were starting to establish themselves in the New World. The story is told through layered
points of view of Jacob, Florens, Rebekka, Lina, and Sorrow. The accounts of these characters shed
light on the historical issues, of the relations between men and women, particularly in seventeenth–
century Maryland society. Lina summarizes, "We never shape the world... the world shapes us"
(Morrison 71). The relationship dynamics between Jacob and Rebekka, and Florens and the
blacksmith are molded by colonial society.

She soon falls deeply in love with him. During that time, non–marital relations were common
among slaves and colonist. Slave owners would often use their slaves for sex and for work. Slaves
had no rights and therefore could not be legally married; which also lead to non–marital
relationships. Florens says to the blacksmith "I am adoring you" the blacksmith answers "and a
slave to that too" (Morrison 139). The blacksmith blames Florens for being inferior to romantic,
love and slavery. She has a natural desire to experience love, but society makes this unattainable
because her cultural environment is based on slavery. She is not only a legal slave to the blacksmith
but an emotion one. In Florens mind, she has the freedom to choose who she loves, and she gives up
all of this freedom to the blacksmith "You are my shaper and my world as well. It is done. No need
to choose" (Morrison 154). She is enslaved to the blacksmith by love. When the blacksmith rejects
her love Florens is crushed; she also loses her identity. This is portrayed in a dream, "Right away I
take fright when I see my face is not there. Where my face should be is nothing."(Morrison138).
The dream is an example of women's dependence of

Jimmie Blacksmith Analysis
Black should be gone, this is the truth behind Mr and Mrs Neville's words. This counsel that
Jimmie's salvation lies in the spread of his genes until they lose all force in the white gene pool is
the point at which you get specifically down to it, as genocidal as what Jimmie in the end does. It is
really pathetic for the public to think that way and it has unfortunately been accepted by the public
at that time. Yet, Jimmie Blacksmith is an aboriginal man who dreams and tries to make a life for

Many reviews recommended the film. Most notably by Geraldine Pascall in 'The Australian'
(Pascall, 1978), Pascall delivered an extremely positive review of the film, enthusing "The Chant is

this Peter Coster (Coster, 1978) observed, "I advise you to see the film. It's just that the 'best'

Essay on Legend by Judith Wright
What features or characteristics of the human condition can you identify in Judith Wright's Legend?
How has the poet used specific language techniques to emphasise these attributes of life.
Judith Wright's 'Legend' responds to various aspects of the human condition present in our society
today. The poem is focused primarily on the actions of a Blacksmith's boy, a vassal for humanity's
growth in response to age and change.
In stanza one, Judith Wright utilizes personification "rivers hindered him" and "thorn branches
caught at his eyes to make him blind" coupled with metaphor "the sky turned into an unlucky opal"
to emphasise nature's hindrance of the blacksmith boy, if the poem is to be deemed as a

The repetition of 'his' used in the following line "His rifle broke, his hat blew away and his dog was
gone." emphasise this emotional and physical loss.
The rainbow, an extended metaphor, symbolises an epiphany, a sudden realisation that is imbued
with hope. The symbolism for the rainbow can also biblically allude to a more religious revelation,
where the blacksmith boy has embraced 'god' into his life. This symbolism along with the contrast
between the two images "But in front of the night the rainbow stood on the mountain", hints to
humanity's capability of change even in the direst of times. The following lines "He ran like a hare,
he climbed like a fox" are similes, to show the blacksmith boy's newfound affinity with nature, and
his rediscovered sense of self. The further similes used in the following lines, "Like a bar of ice, like
the column of a fountain, like a ring of gold." describe the rainbow, in increasing levels of brilliance,
from a bar of ice to a ring of gold, this depicts the blacksmith boy's gradual dawning on the
significance of his revelation, figuratively portraying the value of humanity's affliction with nature
or biblically, the importance of god in our lives.
The final stanza, the symbolism "The blacksmith's boy hung the rainbow on his shoulder, instead of
his broken gun" once again reflects on the human capability of change and adaptation as well as
marking independency. Hyperbole, "and the rainbow shone as brightly

Vikings And Blacksmithing Essay
Have a minute? Good. Because that may be all it takes to learn about Vikings and blacksmithing.
Vikings killed numerous bishops, monks, and priest no matter what age they were. And for every
fatality, they each had a weapon to strike fear in the christians. Yet such weapons were crafted by a
hand of a Viking, however, blacksmiths not only made weapons they also crafted jewelry, tools,
decorations, andnails. Vikings attacked and looted monasteries and the town, where they looted vast
amounts of gold and other valuable objects. While the Vikings were often portrayed as violent cruel

The first metals used from the vikings blacksmiths were bronze, from copper and tin ore, and iron,
however, iron was a stronger metal and was simple enough to get (Morette, Procter, Ryder, and

metals was coal; mostly, blacksmiths used various kinds of tools such as; hammers were used for

cutting, moulds an outline for weapons or other tools, wedges were used for splitting or holding, and
an anvil that is used for a flat surface for metals (Jones, P.g 48), and the vikings also made

A Short Story : A Story?
It was a hot afternoon in the summer of 1896 when the Stranger in Black Denim rode his horse
toward the godforsaken town on the backside of the Oklahoma Territory. Stopping on the outskirts
of town, he heard the windmill's broken vane rhythmically click–clacking with each turn in the
steady west wind. The dry–scraping sound of its pump echoed the plight of the town: too little rain,
not enough water. Many of the storefronts were boarded up, and few people were walking its dusty
streets. Surviving this ecological downturn were the town hall, a livery stable, a general store, a
saloon, and a hotel.
The Stranger stopped at the livery stable and watched sparks fly from the white–hot horseshoe with
each strike of the blacksmith's hammer, coercing the metal into shape. His horse snorted.
Looking up, the blacksmith said, "Howdy, Mister. What can I do you for?"
He dismounted and asked, "How much for feed, water, and bedding for my horse?"
When the blacksmith reinserted the horseshoe deep into the forge, flames danced above the hot
coals. The metal turned white–hot from the life–giving, bellows–pumped air. "For how many days?"
Releasing the cinch, the Stranger slid the saddle off the horse's back. "Maybe, just a few hours." A
wad of tobacco in his mouth, the blacksmith puckered and spit into the hot bed of coals. A burst of
steam marked where tobacco–spittle met searing heat. Wiping his chin with the back of his hand, he
said, "Minimum of six bits for the whole day and

How Heaney Moldes His Roots Through Farming And Forging
How Heaney Moldes his Roots Through Farming and Forging
Seamus Heaney's poems "Digging" and "The Forge" demonstrate how he perceives his purpose as a
writer in comparison to farming and blacksmithing. His first poem, "Digging" was Heaney's debut
to the world of poetry. He had begun to write poetry in 1962, but "Digging" was the first poem he
officially published. This poem highlights Heaney's relationship with his father and grandfather,
contrasting his profession from theirs. He describes them as hard–working farmers, which he is not
and could never be due to his love of writing. The word "digging" itself parallels major themes in
the poem regarding family tradition, memories, and the acceptance of his vocation. This poem
shows Heaney's struggle with recognizing if his identity as a poet is honorable and how that reflects
on his family history. Whereas "The Forge" is published in Seamus Heaney's second volume of
poetry. Similar to "Digging", "The Forge" explores Heaney's admiration for blue collar workers.
Through his writing, Heaney describes a local blacksmith's view of progression, and how once the
forge was an essential part of Irish rural life. In parallel to "Digging", the blacksmith recollects how
once farmers explicitly used the services of the blacksmith to repair and make ploughs and other
farm instruments while also forging shoes for their horses. These two poems are reflections of
Heaney's role as a poet and how he conceives his profession in relation to other

The 's Very Own Blacksmith Fountain
Art has always been a complex, interdisciplinary and necessary craft universally throughout history.
Within modern history, fine art has been revolted against for its strict and primarily aesthetic
rhetoric, where the birth of avant garde takes place. Arguably, this movement allowed for the birth,
if you will, of modern public art. In itself, this field is very convoluted and there are suggested
guideline, as will be demonstrated throughout this paper, particularly by critically reviewing Guelph
's very own Blacksmith Fountain. Interestingly, the piece itself was from the late 19th C, coinciding
with much of the conflict surrounding art in Europe, which then migrated to the new world. With
this in mind, this review of Blacksmith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That being said, this sculpture is heavily inspired by classical Greece, from the sculpture and
detailing down to the colour. This was much more acceptable in the fine art world, which was still a
dominant belief for many people, fitting the public mindset of the piece at this time. Furthermore,
the size and colour not only catch the eye, but illuminate the attention to detail, line and pattern.
Especially when considering the ram heads spouting water, possibly a metaphor for the magical
quality industrial growth can bring to everyday life. Also, the blacksmith atop the fountain is much
taller compared to the average viewer, making them look up, almost as a sign of respect, gratuity, a
role model or simply the memory of the contribution of industry to society and the everyday people
faced with this piece. The point being: it is enticing and memorable, a seemingly true representation
of art in the public sphere. As stated above, public art is very convoluted and ever–expanding,
especially in our contemporary world. Cartier, acknowledges the hardship of putting art in boxes
due to the sheer diversity and approaches to works, stating that one can find "permanent works,
temporary works, political activism, service art, performance, earthworks, community
projects...etc".3 Do these account for public art, or art in general? Rosalind Krauss, aware of the

The And The Levi Jordan Plantation
Blacksmithing and the Levi Jordan Plantation
Introduction
Have you ever wondered about the mysteries of Texas plantations? Well, this paper will hope to

medieval castles and knights possible. It is a great way to understand how life was in the past. Some
other things this paper will go over are artifacts found on the plantation, differences from past life to
today, things about blacksmiths, and how things were made.
Backstory
First of all, some backstory about the plantation this paper is about is that Levi Jordan was born in
Georgia and inherited land in Brazoria–the Levi Jordan Plantation. The Levi Jordan Plantation was

As the decades went on the blacksmiths began to do more tool and vehicle repair and spent less of
their time making items. Their tools can be divided into three categories, the flames, the anvil and
sledge/hammer, and the some other equipment. Under the first group was the bellows, the shovels,
the rake and pretty much anything else used to move the coals, and the water trough. Under the
second group was the tongs, cutters and chisels, as well as hammers and anvils. In the third group
was the shoeing box (which contains knives, rasps, and files) to make horses ' feet and horse shoes.
They made items by first softening the metal over a flame. They then used a bellows to get the
flame as hot as necessary. There are three levels of heat, snowball heat, full–welding heat, and light–
welding heat. The hottest is snowball heat, which refers to white heat; is used to weld. Then there is
full–welding heat, not quite as hot as snowball, employed to weld mild steel. The last is low or

Levi Jordan Plantation Essay
The Plantation
The Levi Jordan Plantation was established in 1848 and was abandoned in 1888, probably because
of mistreatment by Levi Jordan. Some artifacts that were found on the plantation included coins,
rings, bone saw frame, and a slave tag. Some caches were found, and in them were shells, animal
bones, wine bottles, copper, cast iron pans, grapes, and tobacco pipes. Pots were also found next to
the hearth, in what is thought to be the Blacksmith's Cabin. The heath was probably used to bake
clay and for warmth;it was the center of activity in the cabin. In the blacksmith's cabin, bullet
molds, metal tools, arrowheads, and some toys were found, leading people to believe that there were
children there. The arrowheads were probably not used for hunting because they had guns, and it's
much harder to hunt with a bow than guns. It is thought that they might have been used to make the
bullets the right shape, as they were found next to the bullets. Some animal remains found on the
plantation led people to believe that the guns were not just used for war, but also for hunting.

On the Levi Jordan Plantation ceramic shards have been found next to what is thought to be a hearth
or fireplace. Some of the clay was in the form of one bowl, several ceramic plates and cups. The
hearth was most likely the center of activity in the cabin, as tobacco pipes were scattered around it.
Blacksmiths will sometimes make pots, but most of the time they used iron or aluminum. Pots are
made from clay, which can be found anywhere near a river. Then the clay is fired, to dry it after it
has been shaped (most of the time by hand, but in modern times on a pottery wheel). A couple of
countries who were the first to make clay pots were, Czech Republic, Japan, and China. Clay was a
very important resource used for decoration, storage, and

Master Craftsmen in the Medieval
"I like crafts that are made out of necessity because they're a little naive – you made it because you
needed it."– Amy Sedaris. Master craftsmen during the Medieval Ages created items needed for the
kingdom to thrive. Craftsmen included candle makers, shoemakers, and farmers, but the most
famous craftsmen were blacksmiths, carpenters, and masons. Every type of craftsmen were in
groups called guilds and every guild needed to cooperate. If one guild failed to meet its needs, then
the whole medieval structure will fail, causing the kingdom to fall.
Carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths were important craftsmen in building castles and villages and
you had to go through apprenticeship for many years before becoming one of the three master
craftsmen. Before becoming a master craftsman, the child started their training at the age of eleven
or twelve and became an apprentice. A child would be able to choose his own profession or follow
the family business. Some craftsmen that a child can become include: carpenters, masons, and
blacksmiths The apprentice would last from five to nine years depending on the trade. He received
no wages and could not marry until he was a journeyman. After finishing apprenticeship, the
apprentice became a journeyman. A journeyman received money for his labour and bought supplies
that he needed. During his own time, he created a "Masterpiece" and later presented it to his group
of craftsmen, or guild, to see if he was ready to be a "Master",

EL Burro And His Father's Heroism
The tale of EL BURRO started when he was a child. In Arizona 1869 EL BURRO, son of Maria and
Jorge Garcia spent his afternoons bonding and taking care of his pet donkey PHD. EL BURRO
really looked up to his father's heroism because his father was a well known sheriff who saved many
lives, and his mother on many occasions would clad his father's wounds and nurse him back to
health as she did with EL BURRO whenever he got hurt. On many occasions maria would make a
certain drink of water with A LOT of sugar in it and would tell him drink this speed cola. Although
EL BURRO knew this drink to be very sweet he also knew it was something special between him &
his mother. The day was cloudy and rainy in EL BURRO'S memory in the barn washing PHD, ...

The next following days EL BURRO slept in the barn because people didn't want to take EL

job when he was of legal age which was 13. He went to the blacksmith to apply and there he met the
one armed giant as they called him. This "giant" lost an arm from a pack of coyotes that gnawed on
his arm for minutes and when he finally scared them off he went back to the town, unfortunately he
had an infection by the time he had gotten back to the town's doctor so they had to amputate it. Ever
since that day he needed help with daily routines and work. Unfortunately people were just too
scared of the blacksmith. EL BURRO wasn't, because he asked the blacksmith if he could stay with
him and pay rent to sleep in the backroom. The blacksmith then decided to let EL BURRO stay and
work. The blacksmith had EL BURRO do different jobs. One job was to cool down the weapons
that the blacksmith would hammer when he was finished. EL BURRO also had to make sure the
floors were kept clean and the cooling water was always kept filled to the top of the bucket. One
main thing that EL BURRO remembered the blacksmith teaching him was how to be strong and

Welding History
History of Welding The history of welding has traveled from all around the world and has improved
so much.Welding has believe to have started from 4000 B.C. and is still going on right now. The
people that are making these tools are called Blacksmith and still are called that right now even
from many years ago.The role of the Blacksmith was very diverse on how it was not just called a
toolmaker but a dentist, or a doctor. The Blacksmith was at the heart of every country and was often
thought as a magician, due mostly to his great understanding the mastery of the iron working and
the ability to understand the metallurgy of that iron he used to get the result he wants. The
Blacksmith made many type of tools and other objects out of metal.

Chambered Nautilus 'And The Village Blacksmith'
Dry. That's what most people think when they hear the word poem, while some are, most aren't, in
this case, these two poems. "The Chambered Nautilus" written by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. is
about a ship. "The Village Blacksmith" written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is the life of a
blacksmith. He works honest and hard, he does what he can to earn money and respect. They are
different poems indeed. "The Village Blacksmith" is a comforting poem while The Chambered
Nautilus is an eerie and creepy poem in the beginning but begins to lighten up at the end. Both of
the poems were written by some of the best writers of their time, which is why they are still popular
now. In this paper, I will be analyzing these two pieces of literary art and finding the similarities and
differences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You watch the life of a blacksmith through the third person "And the muscles of his brawny arms /
are strong as iron bands" (4, 5). This poem teaches you the lesson that if you work hard and work
honest, you will be respected. Is that not what everyone wants to be, respected and liked? When you
get later into the poem you realize why he works so hard every day. I will not spoil it, but let us just
say it is to work hard to not forget someone. This poem uses mainly metaphors and a little bit of
imagery here and there. "The Chambered Nautilus" is a very odd poem indeed. Imagery reigns
supreme giving you a very clear image of this ship that the poem is describing "Its webs of living
gauze no more unfurl; / Wrecked is the ship of pearl!" (8, 9). The poem describes the ship as a
living, breathing, wretched being. As the poem goes on the sailor steps aboard and realizes that the
ship is not actually that bad, but just given a bad reputation. When the sailor takes the ship as his
own the poem ends with a chambered nautilus as the last

Why Was The Apothecary So Important
A blacksmith was a man who had a very important job. He had to make sure his colony had tools
and supplies for their jobs or living. You may wonder why he was called the blacksmith. It was
because when iron was useable, it was black. They also smited iron, so that is where they got smith
from. Daily Life The blacksmiths were busy in their shops working from dawn to dusk and six days
a week. Sometimes, instead of being paid by money, they bartered their services for goods and food.
But, they mostly spent their days by the burning hearth smelting, bending, turning and smiting iron.

Why Was The Tanner So Important? The tanner may have had a disgusting job, but he was
extremely important. Everyone in the colonial times used leather everyday. Leather made everyone's
boots, coats and clothes. The tanner was pretty much the source of all that. If there was no tanner,
clothes would be a rare item to get (that would be odd)! So even though most of you may be
disgusted, we should be grateful. The Apothecary The apothecary was pretty much a colonial day
pharmacist/doctor. The name apothecary was a historical name for medical professional. Though,
they were not very professional. Most of the time, they just guessed when making medicines or
coming up with cures and diseases. Daily Life The apothecary was busy caring for people by
prescribing them medicine, performing surgery and drawing blood to try and get rid of diseases. The
would make medicines out of herbs, and grind them with a mortar and pestle. The apothecary
usually woke up early and got dressed. They would open their shop and clean a bit. They would
either go to people's homes to help them or they would stay at the shop. Tools an Apothecary

A burst of steam marked where spittle met searing heat. Wiping his chin with the back of his hand,
he said, "Minimum of six bits for the whole day and night. Pay when ya ride out." The Hunter
nodded approval. "This town got a Sheriff?" Shifting his weight, the blacksmith said, "Not

The Village Blacksmith, The Crowd Of Wild Olive
What is human dignity? We often ask ourselves this question as we grow up, experience things, and
know what is in the world. As we ask this question other questions arise as such, is it earned,
invented, or intrinsic? I believe it depends on the situation, but the following stories bring up each of
these questions and deliver different ways of delivering the ideas of human dignity being earned,
invented, or intrinsic. The Village Blacksmith, The Crowd of Wild Olive, Narrative of the life of
Fredrick Douglas all bring up these points and others as well as how different life situations relate to
human dignity.
The Village Blacksmith is a poem about a man that works very hard each day. He is dirty and
sweaty from his hard work. The characters arms are compared to a machine of sorts when the author
says, "The smith a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny
arms Are strong as iron bands." (596). Although rough, and hardworking the story shows that the
man has human dignity when he hears his daughter singing in church and it reminds him of his wife
who has passed away and begins to tear up. He wipes away his tears with his rough hard working
hands. In my opinion, this shows that even though a man is rough, hard working, and tough he can
still have the human dignity to mourn his late wife and have the emotion that comes from hearing
his wife 's voice in his daughter, but still be able to work

Puritan Tools
Have you ever used a tool? Tools have all be designed to be salutary. Tools have not changed much
over time in some things, but on the other hand, they have changed tremendously. Tools have played
an important part of shaping America. Tools are similar and different in many ways such as
production, handles, and purpose. The production of tools has changed quite a bit in the last 200
years. Tools today are made in factories. This causes them to be more consistent. Tools today tend to
be cut out out of a sheet of metal. Tools today have galvanizing to prevent them from rust. Tools
today are not as individualized as the puritan's tools were. Puritan tools were each forged by a
blacksmith. This made for a "non cookie cutter" set of tools.

Similes In The Odyssey
Cheyenne Smith
Epic Simile
11 September 2015
Homeric or epic similes can be found all throughout The Odyssey written by Homer. A simile is the
comparison of two unlike objects using like or as. Homer's similes are considered to be "epic"
because of how elaborate they are to help the audience "feel" and picture a scene. One of the most
glorified scenes in The Odyssey, full of epic similes, is when Odysseus stabs the eye of Cyclops
Polyphemus. As soon as Polyphemus fell asleep from the over–consumption of wine, Odysseus put
his plan into motion to escape the Cyclops' cave. Courage took over Odysseus and Homer writes:
Hoisting high that olive stake with its stabbing point, straight into the monster's eye they rammed it

What Is The Theme Of The Forge By Seamus Heaney
The Man Behind The Door Into The Dark Seamus Heaney uniquely constructed his poem "The
Forge" to tell a story of an inspired outcast scrutinizing a man while he conducts true art. This poem
is not only about an outsider fantasizing about the unknown, but also about a blacksmith's every
move and more. The audience is left questioning "who is this mysterious blacksmith?" and "who
even is this being of inspiration?" After profound research was done, it was uncovered that the
narrator is actually Heaney, and the blacksmith is his dexterous neighbor, Barney Devlin. Heaney's
definitive word choice was significantly influenced by his young, budding mindset as a child,
leading him to speak so strongly about someone that he hardly even knew. As the inspiration behind
multiple works of Heaney, Barney Devlin was a local blacksmith and neighbor to the narrator. It is
said by Vincent Hanley that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In "The Forge," Heaney expounds Devlin, "recalls a clatter / Of hoofs where traffic is flashing in
rows;" (Lines 11–12). Even supposing Heaney knows nothing true about the blacksmith's past, he
uses his fanciful mentality to approach the audience with a realistic explanation of changes that have
come with time. At this point, the world has changed dramatically, subsequent to the beginning of
the blacksmith's career. There is not much reasoning for the blacksmith's work anymore, considering
that the backbone of his business was the horseshoe. Now that time has brought upon cars, the red
light outside his house is a daily reminder of what used to be. He recalls a time when the sound of
hoofs could be heard from the forge. Heaney had not ever spoken to Devlin, yet knowing the facts
of the past and the grunting sounds coming from the inside, Heaney was able to conceive some
possible meaning for it

Where Did Blacksmithing Get Its Name?
(According to austenknapman), the term Blacksmithing originated from when the iron was heated it
would turn black while the term smith came from the word smite, which means to hit.(Where Did
Blacksmithing Get Its Name? (And Other Facts You Didn't Know).(n.d.).) Blacksmithing can be
considered one of the oldest crafts out there, which began most likely in the iron age when primitive
man first began making tools from iron. My thesis is that Blacksmithing was a well–respected task
and was very much needed back in ye olden times.
I chose Blacksmithing as my topic, but, at first, I honestly didn't know what I wanted to do. I

Old iron smelting places used something called bloomeries. These odd furnaces looked like
beehives with an opening in the side and top. They filled these bloomeries with charcoal and iron
ore. They would then pump air into the bloomeries using bellows. They'd then take the blooms of
iron and strike them on an anvil over and over. They would continue to do it until the impurities
were gone. This finished product was called wrought Iron. (Blacksmithing History 1. (n.d.).)
(According to down'n'dirty Blacksmithing/Blacksmithing techniques) There are many different
techniques the blacksmith uses. There is cleansing, forging, punching, drawing, bending, and so
many more. cleansing is where one uses a wire brush, and other cleansing tools to clean the metal.
Forging is where you strike hard and fast to straighten the metal. Punching is where you put a hole
or cut off a part of the metal. Drawing makes the work thinner, but longer or wider. Bending is
where you bend the metal in anyway you want.(Down'n'dirty Blacksmithing/Blacksmithing
Techniques. (n.d.).) conclusion: The modern day blacksmith has become a somewhat automated.
Blacksmiths now sometimes use machines to craft what he/she needs and the task is a lot simpler
than it was back then. Blacksmithing is not as big as it was back then. Nowadays we have factories

Dualism In Toni Morrison's A Mercy
A Mercy by Toni Morrison divulges about wilderness and its unstructured ruling in society. It
alludes again and again throughout the text that it is a bad thing because of its heavily negative
connotation to it when discussed by others, such as the Blacksmith. Florence does not seem to
understand it but she believes it's negative at the beginning, however, after much character
development her she accept the wilderness to be a part of herself. Her wild nature is the result of
uncivilized upbringing, but it has protected her from the situations that were too much to bear, such
as the trauma with her mother and the Blacksmith.
The text starts off with her feet, it is the part in which she is grounded on. Her feet represent her, and
so when she hears, "Only bad women wear high heels. I am dangerous, she says, and wild." The
word wild in this context infers that Florens is uncivilized, different from the others. Her heels ward
off a meaning of danger and sensual. This is a foreshadowing of her conflict with the Blacksmith.
As the text progress she says, "she relents and lets me wear the throwaway shoes from Senhora's
house, pointy–toe, one raised heel broke, the other worn and a buckle on top. As a result, Lina says,
my feet are useless, will always be too tender for life and never have the strong soles, tougher than
leather, that life requires." (10) Lina's critical infers that [main character] cannot function in civil
society. This foreshadows means that she, like her feet

Emily Dickinson And The Village Blacksmith
The Village Blacksmith is a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This poem is about an honest,
hardworking blacksmith who provides for his family by working long hours at the forge. And the
message of the poem is through your life you will eventually change the world by the things you do,
and you make your mark on the world by looking hard every day. There is a Certain Slant of Light
is a poem by Emily Dickinson. In the poem it describes the feeling of hurt and oppression ironically
using light as the instrument of hurting. Throughout this essay I will be explaining and going into
detail of the literary elements found in each individually, but also found in both of these poems. The

The literary elements that i will be talking about are, enjambment, the theme of death and elision.
Firstly enjambment is seen more than once throughout the duration of the poem. Dickinson says,
"Heavenly Hurt, it gives us/We can find no scar," (Dickinson, 5–6) during that part of the poem she
uses enjambment to create a dramatic pause, to show that it is not an actual physical scar, but a
mental one caused by, "Heavenly Hurt". As with The Village Blacksmith, in A certain Slant of Light
there us a common theme of death throughout both. This theme is seen when Dickinson says,
"When it goes, 'tis like the Distance/On the look of Death" Dissimilar to the theme within The
Village Blacksmith, the message of the theme of death is different because of using death as an
object rather than a process that someone undergoes. Rather than using death as something that the
blacksmith dealt with, A certain Slant of Light personifies death as an entity that is being described
as having a distant look. Lastly, elision is the final literary technique i will be talking about. The
quote i will be using to demonstrate the use of elision says, "'Tis the seal Despair –" (Dickinson, 10)
In this quote, the use of the word "Tis" shows the use of elision by shortening and combining the
words "it" and "is". I think the reason that Dickinson did this is because the use of shortened words
was more common in the time period when it was written. I believe that Emily Dickinson's use of
literary devices was able to deliver different messages, and things to think about while reading this

In A Mercy, Toni Morrison carefully chooses names of her characters to provide insight into their
lives and their personality. She further develops these characters through their interactions with each

As they give each other advice and help, we see their personalities shine through. Their names also

The change in Florens' character is due to the blacksmith's abandonment. When Florens is on her
way to get the blacksmith to cure Rebekka, she describes how she does not "know the feeling of or
what it means, free and not free" (81). She also describes how she is "scare[d] of this looseness" and
if that is how free feels she "don't like it" (82). This shows how naïve Florens is and how afraid she
is of not having an owner. At this moment, her owner is the blacksmith because everything she does
is for him. After the blacksmith abandons her, she comes home and Scully notices that before "it
was easy to spot that combination of defenselessness, eagerness to please and, most of all, a
willingness to blame herself for the meanness of others. Clearly, from the look of her now, that was
no longer true. The instant he saw her marching down the road–whether a ghost or soldier–he knew
she had become untouchable" (179). He later goes onto asses her "un–rape–ability" which also
describes the big change in Florens (179). Scully shows that Florens is no longer so naïve and has
learned a lesson that will change her for life, she cannot be controlled by anyone other than herself.
Scully assesses this change in a rather disturbing way but it is an important contribution to show
how the change in Florens is

When Blacksmiths were first starting, they would blow on the flames to stoke them and would hit
molten pieces of metal with rock. As time progressed on, the put a handle on their rocks and used a
bellows to stoke the flame. In modern times blacksmiths used a hand crank fan and used the
hammers that we use today. What blacksmiths make has also changed quite a bit. In the past they
would make almost everything, from tools, to wagons, to pans. As time went on they made less
things, especially weapons as more machines could mass produce them, and blacksmithing almost
died out in the industrial revolution. In modern times blacksmiths are almost never called upon to
make anything other than decorative items for people who want something hand made. The prices
have changed, for example, as stated by, ,"Blacksmith Emerson Bixby of Barre, Massachusetts
charged as little as 2¢ to make a simple small item such as an axe wedge; 12¢ to "mend" (repair) a
hoe; an average of 75¢ to mend an axe; 79¢ to shoe an ox; between $1.00 and $1.50 to "new lay"
(repair and reshape) a plow; and as much as $5.50 to make and apply all the ironwork on a new

A poet has to make poem by making a statement or teaching a lesson but it has to be important
enough to affect the whole nation like the blacksmith who effects the village he lives in. Longfellow

its characters is a school teacher named Mr. Churchill, who has always planned to write a romance,

German Immigrants In America
Writers from colonial times referred to the German immigrants as honest to the bone, frugal with
their money and hard working past sunset. In fact, German businessmen on William Penn's new
land seldom kept track of accounts. As sure as the moon would rise, their neighbors would settle
their accounts in fair time. Many Germans understood the power of discipline and logic. They
transformed waste lands into productive farms; a new country rose from the forests. The German
immigrants never preached violence, considered injustice a moral failure and worshiped god in their
frontier churches. Indeed, our family elders indeed uttered folklores of relatives who never lied,
pinched a penny like a boa constrictor and lived long lives. These stories reflected the character of

Economic life along the Rhine River deteriorated for our ancestors after 1702. A French army under
Marshal Villars reeked havoc across the Rhine region during the "War of the Spanish Succession".
Soldiers looted farms, fought battles and raped women starting around 1707. The invaders even put
restrictions on grazing and wood gathering in the forests. The skilled German's livelihoods dried up.
To make matters worse, historians noted a mini ice age began in 1708/1709. A series of crop failures
followed across Wurttemberg and Pfalz–Rhineland causing famine. Siberian winds rimed the fruit
orchards and vineyards with ice. You could not burn firewood and alcohol froze. The rivers,
including the mighty flowing Rhine, mutated into ice covered wastelands. Like the Tibbens before

The Tyger By William Blake
Successful businessmen will tell you that its how you treat the "lower–level" employees that will
determine your success. If those who do the grunt work are happy, the company will likely prosper.
This notion dates back to the chivalric era in which knights and noblemen would place their trust in
the blacksmith to forge high quality armour and weapons. The blacksmith was held in high regard
for a lower–class citizen, and became a sort of anomaly in the hierarchy of a kingdom. William
Blake evokes the image of a blacksmith as creator in his poem "The Tyger" to comment on the
social and political situations of the times. He chooses a rough, rude and labour–driven artist as a
way of rejecting the aesthetic features of art for more practical, albeit destructive forms.
A blacksmith is an artist of war, a creator of destruction. The tiger is the object of destruction. The
speaker is questioning the creator as to why he would create something so powerful yet destructive,
the same questions one would likely ask a blacksmith as he creates his weapons of war. The
inquisitive tone of the poem allows the speaker to wonder about the things that are created for
destruction and why their creator would allow them to exist. The tiger is one of those creations, as
the speaker enquires in the first and last stanza in almost an apostrophic tone, "What immortal hand
or eye. / Could [Dare] frame thy fearful symmetry?" (Blake 3–4, 23–24 – line 24 differentiation
noted in brackets). The speaker is

Character Analysis Of Mercy

  • 1. Character Analysis Of Mercy In A Mercy, readers are able to see several phases of changes each individual characters go through throughout the book. Lina, she goes through the phase where her experience changes her thinking. Jacob, he changes by community, the surrounding environment he is surrounded by. Florens, the main character of this book especially go through this phase several times. Readers see how her experiences, family, race, and class alter her which is similar to how American's identity is being determined today. First, readers see, from the overall experiences Florens has throughout the book, how her identity is determined which is similar to how American's identity is determined today. For instance, on the very beginning of A Mercy, Morrison references something strange thing that is somewhat out of her context. Florens says, "As a result, Lina says, my feet are useless..." (4). The quote illustrates that how Florens knows her identity or her feature that she has about her that her feet are useless. The quote also claims about how Floren's identity is or what Florens though about her identity is which can be used to compare how Florens have changed throughout her experience. Another examples is shown when in the end of the book Florens shows how she has changed through her experience that refers back to the the experience she had with her mother, Minha Mae. She says, "...Mae, you can have pleasure now because the soles of my feet are hard as cypress" (189). What Florens says demonstrates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Summer of the Mad Monk Essay The Summer of The Mad Monk The year is 1936. Philip Tyler is an imaginative, 12–year–old boy. He lives on a farm outside of the small town of Delia in Alberta but their farm is suffering and their lives are suffering because of the Great Depression. They have lived in poverty for as long as he could remember, so he, like many other boys in that time had to be creative and imaginative. School was nearing the end of the year, and he and his best friend Digger had nothing to look forward to. Diggers father had noticed and he gave the boys an old .22 to work on because the barrel was crooked. Pip and Digger had worked on the thing for weeks and when they were done, it looked funny so they carved the handle to look like an old Colt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Phillip thought that he might be still alive, in the form of Raspinsky! So Pip did a lot of research and settled the Raspinsky was definitely Rasputin. A few weeks later, Pip gained enough courage to go up to the blacksmith and ask him. Right before he was going to knock on the door of the shop he heard the voices of two people, (One which was Raspinskys) and another voice in Russian. So he found a hole in the wall and he looked through but he could not see anyone because they were behind him! A the Russian man grabbed Pip and pulled him into the shop and asked why he was spying on them and he just told them the truth that he thought Raspinsky was Rasputin and Rasputin was trying to escape death by fleeing to Canada. The blacksmith said he was amazed by how much Phillip knew about him and he told Pip that if he told anybody that he would have to kill him. Phillip felt like he grew a foot taller! The next day, he heard that the police were coming to get Raspinsky because he murdered somebody in Manitoba. But it was just a lie made up by the town's boys because they were scared of him and they wanted their old blacksmith back. The Mounties still believed the boys, and they took off to go arrest Raspinsky. Phillip got on his horse and he rode as fast as he could to town to warn Raspinsky. • 3. Comparing Two Poems Compare and Contrast Poems can have many types of hidden messages. It all depends on how you interpret them. In poems somethings are literal and others are just figurative. My two poems are "The Village Blacksmith" by famous poet, Emily Dickinson, and "Morning Song" by another well known poet, Sylvia Plath. "The Village Blacksmith" is about the dedication it takes to not only be a blacksmith, but to also be a single parent. "Morning Song" is about a new mom that learns that being a parent isn't what it is cracked up to be. The poems, "Morning Song" and "The Village Blacksmith" both have a lot in common by both having enjambment, imagery, and stanza. These poems have allowed me understand the different viewpoints on how parents feel about their kids, weather it is dolorous or adore. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, in "The Village Blacksmith" the poetic device enjambment is, "And Children coming home from school / Look in at the open door" (20). The reason why I used this line from the poem is because the sentence isn't finished, but it continues onto another line. It ends on the word school and continues on the next line from the word look. The example of the poetic device in the poem, "Morning Song" is "I'm no more your mother / Than the clouds that distil a mirror to reflect its own slow / Effacement at the wind's hand" (7–9). Enjambment happens in this line three times, so this makes it a strong example. Both of these are great examples that can unmistakably show what the poetic device, enjambment ... • 5. The Importance Of Dreading Jobs In The Middle Ages Dreading jobs seems to be common in today's time, with all the technology, people getting to sit behind desks, and working indoors. They do this so they stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer, it is easy for some jobs now a days. Back in the Middle Ages, jobs consisted of people actually having to work in order to keep food on the table, a roof over their head, and their family that all helped each other out with everything. Back then money was hard to come by because there was not much of it. What jobs did people do in the Middle Ages? A few include a blacksmith, a plowman, a carpenter, a miller, a butcher, a draper, and a weaver. Being a blacksmith was fairly common in the Middle Ages. A blacksmith is a person who makes and repairs things in iron by hand. They also create objects by iron and steel. There are various kinds of tools that are made by blacksmiths. • 6. Analysis of Bernard MacLaverty's My Dear Palestrina Essay Analysis of Bernard MacLaverty's My Dear Palestrina My Dear Palestrina' is a cleverly written short story by Bernard MacLaverty. It is about this young boy called Danny who discovers his musical talent and goes to this piano teacher called Miss Swartz. Their friendship develops and seem to be a formidable partnership until Danny is torn away from his beloved music lessons because of Miss Schwartz private life. Fitted into the story are some important themes that still continue to exist in today's society. In this essay I will try to explain most of them to you. The most notable theme is how the prejudice of people can never be overcome. This is weaved into the story by the relationship of Danny and Miss Schwartz working well together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Blacksmith is also hated by Danny's father for not being religious because Danny's father says, "He'd have you into guns and god knows what. Denying religion at the top of his voice." This shows us that religion is another theme hidden in the story. Right from their very first meeting the Blacksmith tries to lure Danny away from Miss Schwartz and his family, he wants Danny to live his own life and make his own decisions soon become evident. When he doesn't make bangs with his hammer for Danny to walk in time to, it symbolises his want for Danny to live his life the way he wants to. It is also clear to see the Blacksmiths want for Danny to live his life the way he wants to when he says, "You're coming to an age now when you've got to think. Don't accept what people tell you – even your father. Especially your father. And that includes me!" Bernard MacLaverty has included plenty of imagery and symbolism into a carefully constructed short story. For example, when Miss Schwartz pointed out to him when the flowers had fallen off the tree and each week they inspected the swelling fruit, that symbolises the growing repitwa of music Danny is learning and also his growing relationship with Miss Schwartz. When Miss Schwartz says, "Lavish love and attention on growing things and they will not let you down", shows how Miss Schwartz feels about Danny and how she's trying to do what she thinks will keep Danny coming back to ... • 9. Morrison's Summary : A Mercy By Toni Morrison A Mercy is a fictional work that centers on the lives of both slaves and the slave owners. One of the main characters that Morrison is focused on is Florens, a sixteen–year–old slave girl who lives on the D'Ortega tobacco plantation in Virginia. The D'Ortegas are notorious for their cruelty toward their slaves. It is revealed that the D'Ortega family has spent some time in Angola, where the Portuguese were known historically for their severe and inhumane treatment of slaves. As such, Morrison's fictional narrative places itself in the realistic, historical context surrounding the extreme violence and human cruelty associated with many slave owners. Early on, the reader learns that the D'Ortegas are in financial trouble. A trader, Jacob Vaark, arrives to the plantation to collect a debt owed by the family. Vaark stands in direct contrast to the D'Ortegas, and his disproving attitude towards the cruel family is evident. Jacob Vaark does not support the family's arrogance and political/religious views either. The D'Ortega family is not able to make payment, but offers a slave to Jacob as partial payment. Minha mãe, another slave living on the D'Ortega plantation who also happens to be Florens' mother, sees Jacob as a better option than D'Ortega, and decides to convince Jacob Vaark to take Florens as partial payment for the debt. Florens feels that she is being abandoned by her mother, though Minha mãe is simply trying to protect her child. Surprisingly, when Florens arrives at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Poem Evaluation Poem Evaluation Poem 1 I chose the first poem because I liked how it kept the reader interested and it explains the daily life of a blacksmith so well. I like how the poem sets the scene and tone for the following poems. The poem is about what a blacksmith does in his day to day life, it also shows how he is strong and works hard. It tells of how he works for his family and how he takes whatever kind of work is needed. It shows how he is an honest man just working his trade. It also links to the third poem by saying how the 'titan' was trained in swordsmanship by a blacksmith. The poem includes a variety of techniques such as emotive language, metaphor, simile and a rhyme scheme. Emotive language is shown when the blacksmith wipes a tear from his eyes remembering his deceased mother. The similes are 'Like a sexton ringing the village bell' and 'Like chaff from a threshing floor'. The metaphors are 'Are strong as iron bands' and 'And looks the whole ... The poem is about how the castle was built when the kingdom was in its prime and when there were many strong, hard workers. The poem shows how the years of exposure to the elements has slowly made the castle part of the scenery. The poem tells of how the memories made in that castle will remain there forever. The techniques in this poem are metaphor, imagery, personification, repetition and a rhyme scheme. The metaphor is 'Slowly eaten by the land'. The personification and repetition are really joint together when the writer says 'If a stone could speak' it makes you feel as though the castle is alive. There is imagery when the author says 'Once a vibrant, lively place, the castle is no more, weathered by the winds, and ravaged by war', this really gives you a clear image of the castle and its ... • 12. Gender Roles In A Mercy Gender Roles in "A Mercy" Toni Morrison's "A Mercy" takes place in the 1680's when European colonies were starting to establish themselves in the New World. The story is told through layered points of view of Jacob, Florens, Rebekka, Lina, and Sorrow. The accounts of these characters shed light on the historical issues, of the relations between men and women, particularly in seventeenth– century Maryland society. Lina summarizes, "We never shape the world... the world shapes us" (Morrison 71). The relationship dynamics between Jacob and Rebekka, and Florens and the blacksmith are molded by colonial society. She soon falls deeply in love with him. During that time, non–marital relations were common among slaves and colonist. Slave owners would often use their slaves for sex and for work. Slaves had no rights and therefore could not be legally married; which also lead to non–marital relationships. Florens says to the blacksmith "I am adoring you" the blacksmith answers "and a slave to that too" (Morrison 139). The blacksmith blames Florens for being inferior to romantic, love and slavery. She has a natural desire to experience love, but society makes this unattainable because her cultural environment is based on slavery. She is not only a legal slave to the blacksmith but an emotion one. In Florens mind, she has the freedom to choose who she loves, and she gives up all of this freedom to the blacksmith "You are my shaper and my world as well. It is done. No need to choose" (Morrison 154). She is enslaved to the blacksmith by love. When the blacksmith rejects her love Florens is crushed; she also loses her identity. John Hindle (Hindle, 1978) concurred, suggesting that, The Chant "is an important film and should be seen by all people who enjoy the cinema, and by many who don't." Further to this Peter Coster (Coster, 1978) observed, "I advise you to see the film. It's just that the 'best' Australian film has not been made." • 14. Essay on Legend by Judith Wright What features or characteristics of the human condition can you identify in Judith Wright's Legend? How has the poet used specific language techniques to emphasise these attributes of life. Judith Wright's 'Legend' responds to various aspects of the human condition present in our society today. The poem is focused primarily on the actions of a Blacksmith's boy, a vassal for humanity's growth in response to age and change. In stanza one, Judith Wright utilizes personification "rivers hindered him" and "thorn branches caught at his eyes to make him blind" coupled with metaphor "the sky turned into an unlucky opal" to emphasise nature's hindrance of the blacksmith boy, if the poem is to be deemed as a metaphorical representation of ... The rainbow, an extended metaphor, symbolises an epiphany, a sudden realisation that is imbued with hope. The symbolism for the rainbow can also biblically allude to a more religious revelation, where the blacksmith boy has embraced 'god' into his life. This symbolism along with the contrast between the two images "But in front of the night the rainbow stood on the mountain", hints to humanity's capability of change even in the direst of times. The following lines "He ran like a hare, he climbed like a fox" are similes, to show the blacksmith boy's newfound affinity with nature, and his rediscovered sense of self. The further similes used in the following lines, "Like a bar of ice, like the column of a fountain, like a ring of gold." describe the rainbow, in increasing levels of brilliance, from a bar of ice to a ring of gold, this depicts the blacksmith boy's gradual dawning on the significance of his revelation, figuratively portraying the value of humanity's affliction with nature or biblically, the importance of god in our lives. The final stanza, the symbolism "The blacksmith's boy hung the rainbow on his shoulder, instead of his broken gun" once again reflects on the human capability of change and adaptation as well as marking independency. Vikings killed numerous bishops, monks, and priest no matter what age they were. And for every fatality, they each had a weapon to strike fear in the christians. Yet such weapons were crafted by a hand of a Viking, however, blacksmiths not only made weapons they also crafted jewelry, tools, decorations, andnails. • 16. A Short Story : A Story? It was a hot afternoon in the summer of 1896 when the Stranger in Black Denim rode his horse toward the godforsaken town on the backside of the Oklahoma Territory. Stopping on the outskirts of town, he heard the windmill's broken vane rhythmically click–clacking with each turn in the steady west wind. The dry–scraping sound of its pump echoed the plight of the town: too little rain, not enough water. Many of the storefronts were boarded up, and few people were walking its dusty streets. Surviving this ecological downturn were the town hall, a livery stable, a general store, a saloon, and a hotel. The Stranger stopped at the livery stable and watched sparks fly from the white–hot horseshoe with each strike of the blacksmith's hammer, coercing the metal into shape. His horse snorted. Looking up, the blacksmith said, "Howdy, Mister. What can I do you for?" He dismounted and asked, "How much for feed, water, and bedding for my horse?" When the blacksmith reinserted the horseshoe deep into the forge, flames danced above the hot coals. The metal turned white–hot from the life–giving, bellows–pumped air. "For how many days?" Releasing the cinch, the Stranger slid the saddle off the horse's back. "Maybe, just a few hours." A wad of tobacco in his mouth, the blacksmith puckered and spit into the hot bed of coals. A burst of steam marked where tobacco–spittle met searing heat. Wiping his chin with the back of his hand, he said, "Minimum of six bits for the whole day and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Heaney Moldes His Roots Through Farming And Forging How Heaney Moldes his Roots Through Farming and Forging Seamus Heaney's poems "Digging" and "The Forge" demonstrate how he perceives his purpose as a writer in comparison to farming and blacksmithing. His first poem, "Digging" was Heaney's debut to the world of poetry. He had begun to write poetry in 1962, but "Digging" was the first poem he officially published. This poem highlights Heaney's relationship with his father and grandfather, contrasting his profession from theirs. He describes them as hard–working farmers, which he is not and could never be due to his love of writing. The word "digging" itself parallels major themes in the poem regarding family tradition, memories, and the acceptance of his vocation. This poem shows Heaney's struggle with recognizing if his identity as a poet is honorable and how that reflects on his family history. Whereas "The Forge" is published in Seamus Heaney's second volume of poetry. Similar to "Digging", "The Forge" explores Heaney's admiration for blue collar workers. Through his writing, Heaney describes a local blacksmith's view of progression, and how once the forge was an essential part of Irish rural life. In parallel to "Digging", the blacksmith recollects how once farmers explicitly used the services of the blacksmith to repair and make ploughs and other farm instruments while also forging shoes for their horses. Under the second group was the tongs, cutters and chisels, as well as hammers and anvils. In the third group was the shoeing box (which contains knives, rasps, and files) to make horses ' feet and horse shoes. They made items by first softening the metal over a flame. They then used a bellows to get the flame as hot as necessary. There are three levels of heat, snowball heat, full–welding heat, and light– welding heat. The hottest is snowball heat, which refers to white heat; is used to weld. Then there is full–welding heat, not quite as hot as snowball, employed to weld mild steel. The last is low or light–welding heat, rarely used because of how difficult it is. Then when it is hot enough the blacksmith hits it with a hammer to shape it. • 20. Levi Jordan Plantation Essay The Plantation The Levi Jordan Plantation was established in 1848 and was abandoned in 1888, probably because of mistreatment by Levi Jordan. Some artifacts that were found on the plantation included coins, rings, bone saw frame, and a slave tag. Some caches were found, and in them were shells, animal bones, wine bottles, copper, cast iron pans, grapes, and tobacco pipes. Pots were also found next to the hearth, in what is thought to be the Blacksmith's Cabin. The heath was probably used to bake clay and for warmth;it was the center of activity in the cabin. In the blacksmith's cabin, bullet molds, metal tools, arrowheads, and some toys were found, leading people to believe that there were children there. The arrowheads were probably not used for hunting because they had guns, and it's much harder to hunt with a bow than guns. It is thought that they might have been used to make the bullets the right shape, as they were found next to the bullets. Some animal remains found on the plantation led people to believe that the guns were not just used for war, but also for hunting. Another type of thing that was found near the Levi ... • 21. Master Craftsmen in the Medieval "I like crafts that are made out of necessity because they're a little naive – you made it because you needed it."– Amy Sedaris. Master craftsmen during the Medieval Ages created items needed for the kingdom to thrive. Craftsmen included candle makers, shoemakers, and farmers, but the most famous craftsmen were blacksmiths, carpenters, and masons. Every type of craftsmen were in groups called guilds and every guild needed to cooperate. If one guild failed to meet its needs, then the whole medieval structure will fail, causing the kingdom to fall. Carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths were important craftsmen in building castles and villages and you had to go through apprenticeship for many years before becoming one of the three master craftsmen. Before becoming a master craftsman, the child started their training at the age of eleven or twelve and became an apprentice. A child would be able to choose his own profession or follow the family business. Some craftsmen that a child can become include: carpenters, masons, and blacksmiths The apprentice would last from five to nine years depending on the trade. He received no wages and could not marry until he was a journeyman. After finishing apprenticeship, the apprentice became a journeyman. As we ask this question other questions arise as such, is it earned, invented, or intrinsic? I believe it depends on the situation, but the following stories bring up each of these questions and deliver different ways of delivering the ideas of human dignity being earned, invented, or intrinsic. The Village Blacksmith, The Crowd of Wild Olive, Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglas all bring up these points and others as well as how different life situations relate to human dignity. The Village Blacksmith is a poem about a man that works very hard each day. He is dirty and sweaty from his hard work. The characters arms are compared to a machine of sorts when the author says, "The smith a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms Are strong as iron bands." What Is The Theme Of The Forge By Seamus Heaney The Man Behind The Door Into The Dark Seamus Heaney uniquely constructed his poem "The Forge" to tell a story of an inspired outcast scrutinizing a man while he conducts true art. The audience is left questioning "who is this mysterious blacksmith?" and "who even is this being of inspiration?" After profound research was done, it was uncovered that the narrator is actually Heaney, and the blacksmith is his dexterous neighbor, Barney Devlin. Heaney's definitive word choice was significantly influenced by his young, budding mindset as a child, leading him to speak so strongly about someone that he hardly even knew. It alludes again and again throughout the text that it is a bad thing because of its heavily negative connotation to it when discussed by others, such as the Blacksmith. Florence does not seem to understand it but she believes it's negative at the beginning, however, after much character development her she accept the wilderness to be a part of herself. Her wild nature is the result of uncivilized upbringing, but it has protected her from the situations that were too much to bear, such as the trauma with her mother and the Blacksmith. The text starts off with her feet, it is the part in which she is grounded on. Her feet represent her, and so when she hears, "Only bad women wear high heels. I am dangerous, she says, and wild." The word wild in this context infers that Florens is uncivilized, different from the others. Her heels ward off a meaning of danger and sensual. This is a foreshadowing of her conflict with the Blacksmith. The literary elements that i will be talking about are, enjambment, the theme of death and elision. Firstly enjambment is seen more than once throughout the duration of the poem. Dickinson says, "Heavenly Hurt, it gives us/We can find no scar," (Dickinson, 5–6) during that part of the poem she uses enjambment to create a dramatic pause, to show that it is not an actual physical scar, but a mental one caused by, "Heavenly Hurt". As with The Village Blacksmith, in A certain Slant of Light there us a common theme of death throughout both. This theme is seen when Dickinson says, "When it goes, 'tis like the Distance/On the look of Death" Dissimilar to the theme within The Village Blacksmith, the message of the theme of death is different because of using death as an object rather than a process that someone undergoes. Rather than using death as something that the blacksmith dealt with, A certain Slant of Light personifies death as an entity that is being described as having a distant look. Lastly, elision is the final literary technique i will be talking about. The quote i will be using to demonstrate the use of elision says, "'Tis the seal Despair –" (Dickinson, 10) In this quote, the use of the word "Tis" shows the use of elision by shortening and combining the words "it" and "is". I think the reason that Dickinson did this is because the use of shortened words was more common in the time period when it was written. I believe that Emily Dickinson's use of literary devices was able to deliver different messages, and things to think about while reading this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Toni Morrison Names In A Mercy, Toni Morrison carefully chooses names of her characters to provide insight into their lives and their personality. She further develops these characters through their interactions with each other. This can particularly be seen through the character development of Jacob, his wife, and two of his slaves. Each of the women on the plantation must overcome their differences to work together. As they give each other advice and help, we see their personalities shine through. Their names also help provide understanding of their past. As every character describes their story we see how each of their histories bring to life a different point of view. Toni Morrison chooses each character's name to show their individuality and reflect their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The change in Florens' character is due to the blacksmith's abandonment. When Florens is on her way to get the blacksmith to cure Rebekka, she describes how she does not "know the feeling of or what it means, free and not free" (81). She also describes how she is "scare[d] of this looseness" and if that is how free feels she "don't like it" (82). This shows how naïve Florens is and how afraid she is of not having an owner. At this moment, her owner is the blacksmith because everything she does is for him. After the blacksmith abandons her, she comes home and Scully notices that before "it was easy to spot that combination of defenselessness, eagerness to please and, most of all, a willingness to blame herself for the meanness of others. Clearly, from the look of her now, that was no longer true. The instant he saw her marching down the road–whether a ghost or soldier–he knew she had become untouchable" (179). He later goes onto asses her "un–rape–ability" which also describes the big change in Florens (179). Scully shows that Florens is no longer so naïve and has learned a lesson that will change her for life, she cannot be controlled by anyone other than herself. Scully assesses this change in a rather disturbing way but it is an important contribution to show how the change in Florens is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Levi Jordan Plantation Research Paper The Plantation The Levi Jordan Plantation was established in 1848 and was abandoned in about 1888. Some artifacts that were found on the plantation were Coins, Rings, Bone Saw Frame, and Slave Tag. Some caches were found, in them were shells, animal bones, wine bottles, copper, metal objects, cast iron pans, grapes, and tobacco pipes. Some pots were also found in what is thought to be the Blacksmith's Cabin, next to the Hearth. It was probably used to bake clay and for warmth. In the blacksmith's Cabin Bullet Molds, Metal Tools, Arrowheads, and some toys were found, leading people to believe that there were children there. The arrowheads were probably not used for hunting because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Blacksmiths were first starting, they would blow on the flames to stoke them and would hit molten pieces of metal with rock. As time progressed on, the put a handle on their rocks and used a bellows to stoke the flame. In modern times blacksmiths used a hand crank fan and used the hammers that we use today. What blacksmiths make has also changed quite a bit. In the past they would make almost everything, from tools, to wagons, to pans. As time went on they made less things, especially weapons as more machines could mass produce them, and blacksmithing almost died out in the industrial revolution. In modern times blacksmiths are almost never called upon to make anything other than decorative items for people who want something hand made. The prices have changed, for example, as stated by, ,"Blacksmith Emerson Bixby of Barre, Massachusetts charged as little as 2¢ to make a simple small item such as an axe wedge; 12¢ to "mend" (repair) a hoe; an average of 75¢ to mend an axe; 79¢ to shoe an ox; between $1.00 and $1.50 to "new lay" (repair and reshape) a plow; and as much as $5.50 to make and apply all the ironwork on a new wagon.¨ Money from 1850 has changed a lot to now, $100 in 1850=$2,931.69 in 2016. Weapons have also changed a lot over the centuries. For example gunpowder was invented in China in the 9th century. The first gun was fired in 1364 and inventions followed quickly after. Some notable ones are 1498–rifling, 1818–revolver, 1855–Minié ball, 1887–repeating shotgun, and 1892–automatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A poet has to make poem by making a statement or teaching a lesson but it has to be important enough to affect the whole nation like the blacksmith who effects the village he lives in. Longfellow is trying to be show that he is the blacksmith by showing how hard the blacksmith works everyday of his life like Longfellow trying to help his nation during the American Revolutionary War. For example in Kavanagh, Longfellow told his father through a poem he wanted to be a poet not a lawyer. Kavanagh is the story of a country romance. Besides a character named Kavanagh, among its characters is a school teacher named Mr. Churchill, who has always planned to write a romance, but whose procrastination never allows him to start, until late in life he resigns himself to his destiny. Longfellow also used the novel to argue against the view, in the book propounded by a character based on Cornelius Mathews, that American literature must be entirely devoid of European influences and be exclusively national. Instead, Longfellow felt that American literature could and should be universalist, with its unique North American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. German Immigrants In America Writers from colonial times referred to the German immigrants as honest to the bone, frugal with their money and hard working past sunset. In fact, German businessmen on William Penn's new land seldom kept track of accounts. As sure as the moon would rise, their neighbors would settle their accounts in fair time. Many Germans understood the power of discipline and logic. They transformed waste lands into productive farms; a new country rose from the forests. The German immigrants never preached violence, considered injustice a moral failure and worshiped god in their frontier churches. Indeed, our family elders indeed uttered folklores of relatives who never lied, pinched a penny like a boa constrictor and lived long lives. These stories reflected the character of our first German ancestors in America, Blacksmith Hans Gorg ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Economic life along the Rhine River deteriorated for our ancestors after 1702. A French army under Marshal Villars reeked havoc across the Rhine region during the "War of the Spanish Succession". Soldiers looted farms, fought battles and raped women starting around 1707. The invaders even put restrictions on grazing and wood gathering in the forests. The skilled German's livelihoods dried up. To make matters worse, historians noted a mini ice age began in 1708/1709. A series of crop failures followed across Wurttemberg and Pfalz–Rhineland causing famine. Siberian winds rimed the fruit orchards and vineyards with ice. You could not burn firewood and alcohol froze. The rivers, including the mighty flowing Rhine, mutated into ice covered wastelands. Like the Tibbens before them, the conversations turned to America. They analyzed advertisements about William's Penn land of religious Freedom. Penn made friends with many Indians. One could build a church without any fanfare. Image that. And for Hans, the copious amount of farmers relied on a blacksmith's like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Tyger By William Blake Successful businessmen will tell you that its how you treat the "lower–level" employees that will determine your success. If those who do the grunt work are happy, the company will likely prosper. This notion dates back to the chivalric era in which knights and noblemen would place their trust in the blacksmith to forge high quality armour and weapons. The blacksmith was held in high regard for a lower–class citizen, and became a sort of anomaly in the hierarchy of a kingdom. William Blake evokes the image of a blacksmith as creator in his poem "The Tyger" to comment on the social and political situations of the times. He chooses a rough, rude and labour–driven artist as a way of rejecting the aesthetic features of art for more practical, albeit destructive forms. A blacksmith is an artist of war, a creator of destruction. The tiger is the object of destruction. The speaker is questioning the creator as to why he would create something so powerful yet destructive, the same questions one would likely ask a blacksmith as he creates his weapons of war. The inquisitive tone of the poem allows the speaker to wonder about the things that are created for destruction and why their creator would allow them to exist. The tiger is one of those creations, as the speaker enquires in the first and last stanza in almost an apostrophic tone, "What immortal hand or eye. / Could [Dare] frame thy fearful symmetry?" (Blake 3–4, 23–24 – line 24 differentiation noted in brackets). The speaker is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
