The uterus has an inner lining called the endometrium that reacts to hormonal changes each month, preparing to receive a fertilized egg and providing nourishment if implantation occurs. If no implantation happens, the endometrium is sloughed off during menstruation. The fallopian tubes extend from the ovaries to the uterus and help transport eggs and sperm, with the egg usually being fertilized in the upper half of the tubes. The developing fetus resides in the pear-shaped uterus located in the pelvic cavity between the bladder and rectum.
