Chapter 10

The Romantic period in the late 18th century led to an emotional style of acting through gestures. Modern acting training focuses on voice, body, and mind through classes in text analysis, observation, improvisation, and dance or martial arts.
Chapter 6
The director is an interpretive artist who unifies all elements of a theatrical production around a single concept or vision. They coordinate meetings with designers early in the process and focus their work. During auditions and rehearsals, the director works with actors on blocking, character development, and ensuring the production comes together as a cohesive whole. As technical rehearsals begin, the director's primary focus shifts to integrating technical elements while maintaining the artistic integrity of the production. By opening night, the director has handed full responsibility for maintaining the production concept and calling cues to the stage manager.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 3. The Script Typical techniques used in the development of new plays include: • play readings • workshops
- 4. The Playwright (Greek) • They were NOT paid large sums of money. (Starving Artists) • They performed and staged their own plays. • An advantage to directing one's own play is increased control of the final product. • Their work was considered an important civic contribution.
- 5. The Playwright • Why the strange spelling of the English word "playwright"? • In the Middle Ages, "wright" meant a craftsperson. • Shipwright built ships a wheelwright made wheels and vehicles etc. • By the early 1800s, playwriting was still NOT considered a highly respectable profession.
- 6. The Playwright (compensation) • Greeks playwrights were not compensated but instead did it as a civic duty and for recognition. • Elizabethan writers could sell the script to a troupe. • 18th century English Playwrights could also receive profits from a “benefit night” the 3rd 6th and 20th performance of the shows first run. • Fees for each performance of a play are known as royalties. • Copyright laws recognize a play as a writer's intellectual property.

The Playwright (Modern) • A basic awareness of the physical aspects of theatre is important for writers who wish to see their work produced. • Even after the play is in rehearsal a playwright can make the following revisions: • move scenes around • refine or eliminate dialogue • add or cut a song or speech
