Chapter 14-WORKBOOK
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY REVIEW
Define the following terms.
1. Atelectasis: Incomplete expansion of collapse of part or all of a lung due to mucus, tumor, or
a foreign body that blocks the bronchus. The lung is said to be atelectasis. Also known as
collapsed lung.
2. Emphysema: Chronic pulmonary disease resulting in destruction of air spaces distal to the
terminal bronchiole.
3. Tuberculosis: Lung infection caused by the bacterium mycobacterium tuberculosis and
spread by air-borne droplets expelled by coughing.
4. Pneumothorax: Large volume of air that forms in the pleural space and progressively
separates the two pleural membranes.
5. Asthma: Sudden onset of hyperactivity of the bronchi and bronchioles with bronchospasm
(contraction of the smooth muscle). Inflammation and swelling severely narrow the lumen of
the airways.
6. Ventilation: The bulk movement of gas into and out of the lungs.
7. Respiration: The process of gas exchange at the lungs or tissue sites. Oxygen and carbon
dioxide are exchanged in the alveoli during external respiration. Oxygen and carbon dioxide
are exchanged at the cellular level during internal respiration.
8. COPD:A general term for a grouping of diseases (including chronic bronchitis and
emphysema) that effects the efficiency of breathing leading to difficulty of breathing on
exertion.
9. Pleural effusion: Accumulation of fluid within the pleural space due to inflammation or
infection of the pleura and lungs.
10. Tidal volume:Amount of air inhaled or exhaled with each breath under resting conditions
Multiple Choices
Circle the letter of the correct answer.
1. What type of cells make up the membrane that lines the respiratory region of the nose and
most of the airway?
ANSWER:c – Stratified ciliated squamous
2. The region that separates one lung from the other is called:
ANSWER: c – Carina
3. The purpose of pleural fluid is to :
ANSWER: a – Reduce friction as an individual breathes
4. The main function of surfactant is to:
ANSWER: c – Reduce surface tension in the alveoli
5. Which of the following statements is/are true about sinuses:
ANSWER: a –They connect to the nasal cavity via small
passageways
6. Which of the three sections of the pharynx contains the adenoids?
ANSWER: b – Nasopharynx
7. Which of the following statements is true about inspiration?
ANSWER: d – For inspiration to take place, atmospheric
pressure and thoracic pressure need to be equal
8. What is the purpose of cilia in the airways?
9. Which of the three sections of the pharynx conducts air, food, and liquid?
10. The lobes of the lungs are subdivided into ________ with one bronchus in each subdivision
11. Which of the paired tonsils is located in the middle pharyngeal section?
12. Directly below the Adam’s apple is a large cartilage called the
