The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. General anesthesia affects the central nervous system by shutting down the brain's pain centers so the body does not feel pain. Paralysis can originate from damage to the central nervous system, with injuries or diseases destroying brain cells that can paralyze parts of the body on one side. Paralysis may be spastic if muscles are stiff from brain damage or flaccid if spinal cord nerve cells controlling movement are damaged.
