Rizal was forced to leave the Philippines for a second time in February 1888 at age 27, as a practicing physician and recognized man of letters hounded by powerful enemies. He traveled from Manila to Hong Kong aboard the Zafiro, arriving sick and sad after a stop in Amoy. In Hong Kong, Rizal was welcomed by Filipino residents including Jose Maria Basa and Manuel Yriarte, other Filipino exiles involved in the Cavite Mutiny.
