Rizal lived in Ghent, Belgium from July to September 1891. During this time, he struggled financially as he had not received his pension from the Philippines in three months. He lived in a small rented room and ate modestly to save money and publish El Filibusterismo. In late July, Rizal provided details to Eduardo Lete about two agricultural colonies in Belgium. In early August, he thanked Professor Blumentritt for books and planned to write about them but lacked time due to completing El Filibusterismo.
