This document provides biographical information about Jose Rizal during his exile in Dapitan. It discusses his roles as an educator where he established a school, as a physician where he successfully operated on his mother's eye, as a linguist learning local languages, and as an engineer constructing a water system. 1. Lucia Rizal – Herbosa - The older sister of
Jose Rizal who accompanied him upon his
return and arrival in Manila. They went to
Malacañang for a courtesy call to Governor
General Despujol.
General Eulogio Despujol – The current
Governor General of the Philippines when Jose
Rizal returned to the country.
Captain Ricardo Carnicero – The Governor of
Dapitan, where Rizal was deported. Rizal was
then under the care of Captain Carnicero. He
gave Rizal favorable feedbacks on his reports.

2. Captain Juan Sitges – The next successor of
Captain Ricardo Carnicero. Who took over the
care of Jose Rizal and also gave him favorable
reports regarding his behavior in Dapitan.
Mr. Juan Lardet – A French businessman
whom Rizal had conflict and did challenged him
for a duel.

3. Rizal as an educator – Rizal established a
school in Dapitan. It began with 3 pupils then
increased to 21. Formal classes were between
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. He also applied the
“emperor” system like that of Ateneo. He made a
poem “Hymn to Talisay”, in honor of Talisay
which he made his pupils sing.
Rizal as a physician – It was Rizal who
operated the right eye of his mother because
she is slowly losing her sight because of
cataract. The operation is successful. Several
patients visited him in his clinic and he
impressed them all. He recommend medicinal
plants as medicines to some of his poor patients.
Rizal as a Linguist – Rizal continued his
studies of different languages. In Dapitan
he learned Bisayan, Subanon and Malay
languages. But by that time he already
knew 22 other different languages.

4. Rizal as an Engineer – Rizal applied his
engineering knowledge by constructing a
system of waterworks to furnish clean
water to the towns people, it was at Talisay.
Mr. H.F Cameron, an American engineer,
praised him for his engineering ingenuity.
Rizal as a Writer – He send a letter to his friend
Dr. Ferdinand Blumentritt, describing his
peaceful life in Dapitan. He told him he spent
most of his nights reading and writing.
Rizal as a Musician - Rizal had no natural
aptitude for music. He studied music only
because many of his schoolmates at Ateneo
were taking music lessons.He “learned the
solfeggio, piano, and voice culture in one
month and a half”. He is also a flutist.Some of
his compositions are: Alin Mang Lahi (Any
Race) – a pariotic song which asserts that any
race aspires for freedom La Deportacion
(Deportation) – a sad danza, composed in
Dapitan.

5. Josephine Bracken – An Irish by descent,
born and orphaned in Hongkong. Rizal then fall
in love with Josephine and intended to marry
her. But was not materialize because they lack
the marriage approval from Cebu. Josephine
gave birth prematurely to and eight-month-old
boy who lived only for a few hours.
Engr. George Taufer – The adopting father of
Josephine Bracken. The main reason why they
came to the Philippines in order to consult Rizal
concerning his blindness.

6. Dr. Pio Valenzuela – An emissary of Andress
Bonifacio who came to Dapitan to see Rizal with
a secret mission. But failed to acquire his
approval regarding the revolutionary society.
Governor General Ramon Blanco – Gave
Rizal a letter of recommendation to the
Minister of War, stating that Rizal’s conduct
during his stay in Dapitan has been
exemplary, and that he’s in no way involved
in the conspiracy nor in any of the secret
societies that have been formed.
