Leadership in the Era of Innovation - A Case Based PresentationStefan Lindegaard
I recently did a session in Helsinki, Finland on leadership in the era of innovation. My approach was interactive as I developed three short cases for the audience. We deep-dived into one of the, The Frustrated Innovation Team and very briefly discussed the other two.
Here you can see the presentation slides (very simple as I focused on interaction and discussion).
Developing Top Performers: How to Grow Your Own, UACPA Winter Conference 2016Dan Griffiths
The fierce competition for talent has led many managers and leaders to shift from "finding the right talent" to "growing the right talent." Just like waiting for that pumpkin in your garden to turn orange in time for Halloween, it can take patience. However, in today's talent-scarce environment and for other reasons we will discuss, it might be the best option we have. In this session we'll discuss some of the latest research and thinking on what drives human performance and then apply it to the challenge of how to accelerate the development of every member of your team.
Be Competitively Unpredictable! - Make it happen with innovationStefan Lindegaard
Competitively unpredictable: two words that spell the key to success in today’s fast paced, highly competitive business arena. If your company has the ability to consistently outmaneuver the competition in ways they never see coming, then the future is bright.
Why is being competitively unpredictable so essential now? One key reason is the ever-shrinking window of opportunity. In the past decades, depending on your industry, you could count on having three or five or even seven years after bringing something new to market to make good money before you needed to come up with the next new thing to keep revenues growing.
This is no longer the case. While the pace of innovation used to be fast but still manageable, now the window of opportunity is getting shorter and moving faster so you’re forced to innovate ever faster. One of the best examples is the mobile phone industry where they are now counting in months.
Open innovation and business model innovation are key concepts for becoming competitively unpredictable and in this session Stefan Lindegaard shares his views on how companies can embrace these concepts in order to bring better innovation to market faster.
Specifically, he provides:
• an overview of the current state of innovation and what the future will bring us
• examples on how leading-edge companies merge open innovation and business model innovation
• insights on why companies must embrace failure for better innovation
• insights on how companies can use social media for their innovation efforts

High attrition rates in online workforce training and development programs suggest that practitioners continue to struggle to develop relevant learner-centric experiences for their workforce (Crofton, 2014). One strategy to increase learner engagement is through personalizing learning to meet an individual’s development needs. Personalized learning has been shown to support significantly higher levels of customer satisfaction, retention and loyalty towards products and services which may translate to increased engagement in training and development (Kwon, Cho, & Park, 2010; Kwon & Kim, 2012; Springer, 2014). While there are several efforts to understand personalized learning within K-12 contexts, there are currently few published studies that focus on the use of personalized learning within the realm of workforce education (Capuano, Gaeta, Orciuoli, and Ritrovato, 2009a). In this qualitative study, leaders in training and development (N=10) were interviewed to uncover (a) the current operating definition of personalized learning, (b) whether or not personalized learning initiatives are occurring within the workplace setting, and (c) what obstacles and opportunities for personalized learning exist from an organizational standpoint. Design and implementation considerations for future programs, resources, or tools that incorporate personalized learning as a workforce learning strategy are discussed.
One of the key tenets of agility is that we are always learning. But how does that fit in if we're always working too? How do we bake in continuous learning without breaking the bank?
Too often learning is treated as a nice to have or even a luxury.
And when we do get to attend training, it usually happens in isolation, making it difficult to apply. The words 'I've learnt that you're doing it wrong' seldom go down well with our teams!
This session looks at a practice based approach to incorporating expert-led knowledge and team expertise in continuous learning into your normal routine.

Diversity is much-praised for fostering healthier and more innovative workplaces. But whichever way you slice ‘diversity’, the majority of our teams reflect one demographic, and simply adding “a diverse hire” won’t magically produce these results. So are the claims true? If so, what else do we need to do?
Through our time training and placing coders from widely differing backgrounds we’ve had to get to grips with the realities of integrating teams.
This talk looks at the importance of inclusive practices and explores the link with quality and innovation. We also investigate some of the unconscious biases and infrastructure challenges that reinforce exclusion.
With collaboration at their heart, agile teams are best placed to promote inclusion. How can we extend agile practices to place conscious attention on creating connections and to build truly healthy, demographically representative teams?

How do we replace upfront analysis and contracts that simply lock in our ignorance? This talk covers deliberate discovery and the tools that allow us to embrace uncertainty in complex projects.
Agile Requirements - Journey of a User StoryCara Turner
This talk is an experience report on how we've used agile and lean requirements practices like story mapping, user stories, mockups, scenarios and sprint review feedback, on a real project.
It is not theory-based, but rather tells the warts-and-all real story, with a number of photos and screenshots, and detailed discussions of benefits and drawbacks, to give an idea of what it really felt like.
YouTube video of the talk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUIWLNiGYEk
Talk description:
How do agile requirements work? Where does documentation fit in?
For many of us, the transition from the security of upfront analysis and detailed specification documents to ‘doing agile’ and embracing the process of discovery is a terrifying prospect. Agile theories don’t readily address the concern ‘how will we know where we’re going if we don’t start with a Business Requirement Specification?’
In this talk I will take the audience on the journey of a real customer requirement from inception to delivery, seeing how the user stories evolved over time.
Starting at the beginning I’ll take you through how the user need was elaborated into features, stories and scenarios to become released software, and how feedback from customer interaction continued to shape it.
As we go along, we’ll see how the documentation built itself, and how it compares with the traditional Business Requirement Specification document.
With a little bit of theory and a lot of real world experience, we’ll also cover questions like “How can we be sure we’ll cover everything?” and “How do we overcome our uncertainty?”
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production.
Yet, they often turn into annoying tasks riddled with frustration, hostility, unclear feedback and lack of standards. How can we improve this crucial process?
In this session we will cover:
- The Art of Effective Code Reviews
- Streamlining the Review Process
- Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools
By the end of this presentation, you'll have the knowledge on how to organize and improve your code review proces

Need for Speed: Removing speed bumps from your Symfony projects ⚡️Łukasz Chruściel
No one wants their application to drag like a car stuck in the slow lane! Yet it’s all too common to encounter bumpy, pothole-filled solutions that slow the speed of any application. Symfony apps are not an exception.
In this talk, I will take you for a spin around the performance racetrack. We’ll explore common pitfalls - those hidden potholes on your application that can cause unexpected slowdowns. Learn how to spot these performance bumps early, and more importantly, how to navigate around them to keep your application running at top speed.
We will focus in particular on tuning your engine at the application level, making the right adjustments to ensure that your system responds like a well-oiled, high-performance race car.

Hand Rolled Applicative User ValidationCode KataPhilip Schwarz
Could you use a simple piece of Scala validation code (granted, a very simplistic one too!) that you can rewrite, now and again, to refresh your basic understanding of Applicative operators <*>, <*, *>?
The goal is not to write perfect code showcasing validation, but rather, to provide a small, rough-and ready exercise to reinforce your muscle-memory.
Despite its grandiose-sounding title, this deck consists of just three slides showing the Scala 3 code to be rewritten whenever the details of the operators begin to fade away.
The code is my rough and ready translation of a Haskell user-validation program found in a book called Finding Success (and Failure) in Haskell - Fall in love with applicative functors.
