Disaster preparedness: Droughts
The significant problems we face today cannot
be solved at the same level of thinking we were
at when we created them. Einstein, Albert
2. The problem
Due to climatic changes,
severe and prolonged
droughts are expected in
the next years to come.
Drought is a major
setback in achieving
Millennium Development
Goal 1: to eradicate
extreme poverty and
hunger
3. The problem
Droughts are completely
natural, but human activities
such as deforestation can
worsen the effects.
Drought is a problematic
issue on the African continent
with the recent severe
drought in Somalia and
Ethiopia
4. The problem
In Zimbabwe, there
is drought every
year in many areas
which have erratic
rainfall patterns.
Every year at least
one country faces a
severe drought in
Africa
"weather events will become less predictable and more intense -
heavier rainfall and longer and more frequent drought cycles-
Martin Krause (UNDP-GEF)
5. The solution
AfroVig is an Agro-Ecotourism
program aimed to assist rural
communities of the drought-prone
regions of Zimbabwe through
domestication, utilization and
commercialization of indigenous fruit
and nut trees to prepare for droughts.
AfroVig AfroVig
6. The implementation
Implementation Strategy
Stage 1: Selection of rural communities mostly affected
by droughts.
Stage 2: Cultivation of all drought resistant indigenous
fruit trees gathered all over the country. The local people
will set up nursery beds at their homes until the trees can
be replanted at a selected orchard. It will take 5 to 10
years for the trees to fully mature
Stage 3: A food processing plant will be set up at the sites
so that after the maturation of the fruits, final products will
be added value and thereby increasing the uses and
supply of food.
Stage 4:through partnerships, the AfroVig program will
expand to other African countries.
7. The solution
Relevancy of the solution
The AfroVig project as an
afforestation program, will not only
prepare the societies for droughts
but it goes further to provide
solutions to the long term effects
of droughts such as poverty,
hunger, reduced economic
activities, unemployment.
This is made possible by the
entrepreneurial
component of Ecotourism
and food processing which
will generate income for
the local communities.
8. The Solution
The Innovation
The project took its concept from two types of
programs that are already being carried out in
Zimbabwe.
1. Afforestation
programs (to ensure
environmental
protection)
2. Botanical gardens
(for tourism purpose
only)
However, AfroVig will combine these two programs to
come up with one which will focus on drought
preparedness and increase in food supply.
9. The Benefits
Rationale
Afforestation program- will ensure
environmental sustainability thereby reducing
the effects of droughts
Fruit trees- will increase food supply which
would be important in the times of drought
Food processing- adding value to the fruits will
enable the communities to sell them profitably
Ecotourism- creates employment and improve
economic activities
10. The Benefits
Rationale
Indigenousfruit trees are drought resistant
and they suit the particular environmental
changes of their parent country
Climate change could force drought-prone areas of southern
Africa to abandon agriculture permanently in the next 50
years, according to new research- IRIN
We are challenging the future…
Yes we can…Barack Obama (President of USA)
Editor's Notes
The front slide should contain: •The name of the solution: •Envisioned disaster: •Area: disaster prevention, preparedness, response or adaptation •Your name, school (if applicable), country
Step 1Envision disaster and present it as clearly as possible (max 3 slides)1. Which disaster will we be facing? Why have you selected this one?2. What is the actual problem of selected disaster, do we have any history of it already ?3.
To research on the recent droughts faced by African countries. What is the actual problem of selected disaster, do we have any history of it already ? Increased desertification - Damage to animal species - Food shortages Add deforestation programs pixs
When and under which circumstances do you expect that the disaster might occur? Atmospheric conditions such as climate change, ocean temperatures, changes in the jet stream, and changes in the local landscape are all culprits in the long story of the causes of droughtsErosionAir and water pollution
What is your idea and is it related to prevention, preparedness, response or adaptation of selected disaster?
How would your solution work? What is the plan?
How is your solution relevant and effective
Why is your idea innovative? Are there any similar projects/ideas already on local or global level? Please describe
Present us potential impact (achievements, results) of your idea (max 2 slides)1. Present the goals and targets that you are trying to achieve with your solution.2. What positive impact are you expecting from your solution? 3. What are your arguments to demonstrate that your idea will work in real life?
