The War Hawks were a group of 40 men who worked to get Henry Clay elected as Speaker of the House in order to push for war with Britain over trade issues. While the British eventually lifted trade restrictions, the US declared war shortly after. The US struggled in the early years of the War of 1812 due to a small army, lack of national bank, and poor communication. However, the US saw victories at sea and at the Battle of New Orleans, and the eventual Treaty of Ghent ended the war, giving the US newfound respect and nationalism while allowing its industry to develop.
